"You just said we were friends."
His voice softened, and the righteous anger he felt moments before deflated completely. He lowered his tone, asking cautiously and carefully.
"I don't need friends, either."
The truth was, she didn't dare to have friends.
"Suit yourself." Zane Jennings looked up and took a few steps until he was standing face-to-face with her. His expression was calm, as if he'd decided to just throw caution to the wind. "Besides, I never wanted to be friends with you anyway."
He said the last part so softly it was almost a murmur, but in the silence of the consultation room, she heard every word.
