After standing there for a long time, Nancy Warner asked Ian Sheffield, "Your new friend?"
She glanced back for a moment before looking away again. The gentle breeze by the lake stirred her shawl, and she found it impossible to calm her thoughts.
Ian Sheffield wasn't known for making friends. She only asked because she had no idea what he was up to.
"No." He half-lowered his head, listening to the sound of the lapping water as he spoke nonchalantly. "He's skilled."
Nancy Warner folded her arms and smiled, as if she had already figured it out.
"And then?"
Ian Sheffield glanced to his side, then at her back as she stood against the wind. All he could see was solitude and desolation. A hard-to-read emotion was hidden in his eyes. "I plan to have him protect you."
Hearing this, Nancy Warner turned back. She stared for a few seconds before walking up to him and looking him in the eyes.
