The night deepened. It had just rained, leaving the world outside quiet. The faint sound of wind rustling through the nearby grass mingled with the chirping of insects.
Erin Lowell lowered her gaze, glancing over.
She couldn't tell if he was truly asleep or just pretending. He was leaning against her shoulder, his eyes shut tight, looking utterly peaceful.
After a long while, she looked up. A few faint stars glimmered in the hazy night sky.
Her shoulder shifted. "Hey, want to look at the stars?"
The man on her shoulder didn't stir, but his head shifted. He glanced up for a second before looking down again. "Too few."
"It just rained. We're lucky to see any at all."
Zane Jennings sat up, a hint of regret in his voice. "I guess this will have to do. Just remember you still owe me a sky full of stars."
Hearing that, Erin Lowell laughed and offered her grand assessment: "You'd be great at business."
