Raindrops clung to the branches, which were sparse with green leaves at the onset of winter. When the wind blew, they swayed gently, shaking loose droplets that ran down from the eaves.

Zane Jennings's gaze never left her. His eyes were pale, so pale they seemed devoid of the world's colors.
His voice was laced with sadness. Erin Lowell glanced back at him. It was dim, and with his head slightly lowered, she couldn't see his eyes—only his still eyelashes.
She pressed her lips together and held out her hand, palm up, without saying a word.
Zane Jennings lifted his gaze to the piece of candy lying in her palm. After a long silence, he suddenly smiled. "For me?"
She nodded.
He took it but didn't eat it, just clutched it in his palm.
