Erin Lowell looked up.
Her gaze followed the red glow of the evening sky.
Zane Jennings stood a few steps away. His hair, damp with the mountain mist, lay flat against his head, making him look exceptionally well-behaved.
He was dressed in his usual black: an open jacket over a black shirt, paired with loose-fitting black pants. It was a casual look, very much his style.
His red-and-white shoes were caked with mud along the edges from his walk through the dirt path.
He walked toward her, backlit by the fading light, and called her name. "Erin."
All of Erin Lowell's thoughts came to a halt. As she gazed at his damp hair, the panic and unease that had been knitted into her brow instantly vanished. The corners of her mouth twitched slightly, a hint of joy barely visible in her eyes. The fear she'd felt earlier disappeared the moment she saw him.
It was like a sudden, violent storm had unexpectedly given way to calm.
