When Xiao Furen came home after school in the afternoon, he expected to be greeted by a table laden with delicious food. Instead, the house was eerily quiet. Not only was there no feast, but the people who should have been home were nowhere to be heard.
"Has Grandma gone out? Did Little Aunt go with her?" Xiao Hu hopped off the back of the bike. Seeing no activity in the kitchen, he assumed his grandmother wasn't home.
"Grandma's not home, so there's no food. Niu Niu's going to starve." Little Niu, sitting on the front seat of the bicycle, didn't see his grandmother or the dining table set up under the tree. His eyes immediately welled up with tears as he turned to look pitifully at his little uncle-in-law.
Xiao Furen parked the bike and lifted the little tyke off the front seat in exasperation. "Didn't you just eat at kindergarten? How could you be hungry?"
