Unable to get his wife to budge, Xiao Furen could only go to the other room to check on the Old Madam. At the very least, he had to say a few words to comfort her; he couldn't let her get so angry she made herself sick.
Fortunately, the Old Madam was much calmer than his wife. She listened to whatever he said without making a sound, though she wore a cold expression the entire time.
Xiao Furen's attempts to mediate had no effect, so in the end, he threw up his hands and stopped trying. 'They're mother and daughter, after all,' he thought. 'They won't hold a grudge. They'll surely make up in a few days.'
The two women of the house were on strike, but everyone still had to eat. That left Xiao Furen to go to the kitchen and cook for the family.
From her room, the Old Madam heard the sounds from outside and said to her older grandson, "Alright, I'm fine in here. Your uncle is cooking. Go give him a hand."
"Okay!" Xiao Hu agreed listlessly, then obediently headed out to the kitchen.
