When that question slipped through my lips, I felt as though my entire life was suspended on a thread. I shouldn't have asked. Why did I open my big mouth and dig a hole for myself?
'You shouldn't have done a lot of things, kiddo,' Atlas said.
For once, his words weren't mocking, but instead they stunk of pity, the same pity I would give someone if I found out they were mateless with only months to live.
Well, that could be me in the next moment. I felt my stomach churn restlessly as I looked at Iris. I caught the faintest hint of pity flickering across her face.
That's it. She was going to reject me for good. My heart fell to my stomach.
Suddenly, I couldn't bear to hear the words coming out of her mouth.
As though I was possessed, I quickly leaned down and kissed her, sealing her lips with mine. She couldn't speak like this, and at least if she wanted to scold me after, I would have at least gotten one last final kiss out of it.
