Chapter 23 — Cracks Beneath the Surface

Hazel didn't cry.

That was the strange part.

She expected tears. Screaming. Something dramatic.

But when she got home, all she felt was… quiet.

A dangerous kind of quiet.

Klara followed her inside, nervous energy clinging to her skin.

"You should rest," Klara suggested gently.

Hazel nodded absentmindedly and walked to the window.

The city lights shimmered below.

Kyle's words replayed in her head.

He wanted you.

Not shares.

Not money.

Her.

Annabelle stood a few feet away, watching carefully.

Hazel didn't notice the way Annabelle subtly inhaled.

Her scent was changing.

Not fully.

But something beneath it was stirring.

Across town, in his office at The Smith's Company, Ryan stood still.

Liam was mid-sentence when it happened.

A pulse.

Sharp.

Like something ancient brushed against their territory.

Ryan's head snapped up.

"You felt that?" Liam asked.

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"Yes."

It wasn't wolf.

It wasn't vampire.

It wasn't demon either.

It was something layered.

Sealed.

And now… cracking.

Back at the apartment, Hazel pressed her palm to her chest.

Her heartbeat was uneven.

Too slow.

Then too fast.

She inhaled sharply.

For a split second, the room felt smaller — like the walls were bending inward.

She blinked.

Everything went normal again.

"Hazel?" Klara stepped forward.

"I'm fine," Hazel replied quickly.

But she wasn't.

Her body felt overheated.

Like something under her skin was trying to rise.

Later that night…

Hazel finally slept.

And dreamed.

She stood in a dark field.

The moon above her wasn't white.

It was red.

Not bright red.

Deep.

Eclipsed.

A figure stood across from her.

Tall.

Unclear.

Power radiated from him in waves.

Not threatening.

Claiming.

"You are late," the figure said.

Hazel tried to speak but couldn't.

She looked down at her hands.

They weren't normal.

Faint golden lines glowed beneath her skin.

Like markings trying to surface.

The figure stepped closer.

When moonlight touched his face—

It was Ryan.

But not the Ryan she knew.

His eyes were darker.

Older.

Knowing.

"You cannot stay hidden anymore," he said quietly.

The ground beneath her feet cracked.

Hazel jolted awake.

Gasping.

Her bedroom lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then steadied.

Her skin burned.

She stumbled to the bathroom and turned on the tap, splashing water on her face.

When she lifted her head—

She froze.

Her reflection stared back at her.

Normal.

Then—

For a single heartbeat—

Her pupils flashed gold.

Hazel stumbled backward.

"No…"

Her phone buzzed suddenly, making her flinch.

Unknown number.

She hesitated.

Then answered.

Silence.

Then a low voice.

"Did you think he chose you randomly?"

Her blood ran cold.

"Who is this?"

A soft chuckle.

"You were always part of the contract, Hazel."

The line went dead.

Her hand trembled.

Outside, thunder rumbled across a clear sky.

Across the city, Ryan slowly lowered his phone.

Liam looked at him carefully.

"Was that wise?"

Ryan's eyes were fixed on the skyline.

"She needed to feel the shift."

"And if she awakens too soon?"

Ryan's expression darkened.

"Then we stop pretending she's human."

Back in her apartment, Hazel stared at her reflection again.

This time…

The mirror cracked slightly at the corner.

A thin line spreading.

She hadn't touched it.

Her breathing slowed.

Something inside her whispered.

It's beginning.

And Hazel realized something terrifying.

Kyle trading her wasn't the real betrayal.

The real betrayal was that everyone knew something about her—

Except her.
