Chapter 59 - Ending D (The Mediator Breaks)

PORTSTEAD — GLASS HARBOR SQUARE — CONTINUOUS

Mercedes held the page like a priest holding scripture.

The title printed itself in silver ink as we watched:

**ENDING D: THE MEDIATOR BREAKS**

Sera stopped moving.

Not because she was afraid of Mercedes.

Because she recognized the *shape* of the trap.

"Don't look at it," I said immediately.

Too late.

Sera's silver eyes tracked the page anyway, like gravity.

Mercedes smiled gently, like she was offering mercy.

"You've been so good," she said. "So controlled. So responsible. So human."

The crowd behind her—people holding blank pages—kept writing the resistance sentence Sera had given them:

**I WILL NOT BE USED.**

It should have been a victory.

It wasn't.

Because Mercedes wasn't trying to win the crowd anymore.

She was trying to break *one person*.

Sera.

Mercedes stepped forward one pace.

"That's your weakness," she said softly. "Not power. Not rage. Not fear. It's *responsibility.*"

Sera's jaw tightened.
