Chapter 60 - The Mob and the Mediator

PORTSTEAD — GLASS HARBOR SQUARE — CONTINUOUS

The first stone hit my palm hard enough to sting.

Not lethal.

Not even close.

But it was the first time in years someone had tried to hurt Sera with the simple, stupid confidence of a crowd that believed it was righteous.

More stones followed.

Not all aimed at Sera. Some hit the crate she'd stood on. Some hit the ground. One clipped a man's shoulder and made him yelp—then turn angrier, because pain in a mob becomes fuel.

And over it all, the sentence Mercedes printed into the air kept echoing in people's heads:

**THE AUTHOR CAUSED THIS.**

It wasn't a voice anymore.

It was a *lens*.

People looked at the blank pages, at the chaos, at their own fear—and the lens handed them the simplest explanation available:

Blame her.

Sera didn't move.

She stood with blood still at the edge of her lip, silver eyes steady, hands open, posture calm.

Human.

Deliberately human.
