Jay Jay's POV
The relentless, rhythmic beep… beep… beep of the heart monitor was the first thing that anchored me back to reality. My eyelids felt heavier than lead, but as I slowly blinked against the soft, low amber glow of the room, the terrifying, suffocating darkness of the basement didn't swallow me. The walls weren't closing in.
Instead, the very first thing I saw was a vast, protective wall of familiar shoulders.
I blinked again, my vision clearing through the fading, heavy fog of the sedation. They were all here. Every single one of them. Section E had completely taken over the private ICU wing. Angelo was sitting on a chair right by my feet, his face a completely hollowed-out mask of exhaustion and raw relief. Aries was leaning against the wall near the door, his eyes bloodshot, watching my every breath as if he was afraid I'd vanish if he blinked. Percy was sitting elegantly on the windowsill, his usual self-obsessed, pristine posture slightly fractured, his dark eyes fixed entirely on me. Around them stood Yuri, Calix, Felix, Blaster, Denzel, and Josh—a literal multi-billion-dollar assembly of global power, all standing guard in the quiet room like a fortress of untouchable iron.
And right beside me, holding my hand so tightly it felt like a lifeline, was Keifer.
I shifted slightly, swallowing hard against the dryness in my throat. My body felt incredibly sore—a dull, heavy heat throbbed against my fractured ribs, and my jaw felt stiff—but the blinding, sharp explosion of agony was gone. I actually felt a little well. The physical safety of the room was a tangible, warm weight pressing down on my chest.
A sudden, overwhelming rush of conflicting emotions crashed straight through my soul, making my breath hitch. I felt deeply sad, the terrifying phantom memory of Zoren's heavy hand in my hair and the cruel names echoing in the dark basement still clutching at the edges of my sanity. I felt the physical pain radiating from my abdomen, a harsh reminder of how brutally Arturo had kicked me. Yet, looking at the swollen, bloodshot eyes of my brothers and the fiercely protective expressions of Section E, a suffocating wave of pure, unadulterated love completely drowned out the despair. I was cherished. I was safe. I wasn't that helpless, isolated child anymore.
The moment my chest heaved with a small sob, the entire room snapped into high alert.
"Jay Jay..." Keifer murmured, his gravelly voice dropping into a low, desperate vibration. His dark, intense eyes locked onto mine, a rare, terrifyingly soft expression breaking through his cold mafia facade.
I weakly tried to lift my left hand to brush a stray tear from my cheek, but before my fingers could even clear the white sheets, Calix and Yuri stepped forward with lightning speed.
"Don't move a single inch, jay," Calix scolded, his usual arrogant smirk completely missing as he gently pinned my wrist back down to the mattress with absolute softness. "The doctor said you are made of glass right now. No lifting, no straining."
"Water. She needs water first," Yuri commanded, smoothly sliding a glass with a flexible straw right up to my lips. He carefully supported the back of my head, ensuring my neck didn't strain by a single millimeter. I took a few small, desperate sips, the cold liquid soothing my raw throat.
Keifer let out a low, dangerous rumble from his chest, his jaw clenching into iron as he reached for a small bowl of warm, nutrient-rich broth the doctors had left on the bedside table. He picked up the silver spoon, his long, powerful fingers trembling slightly with an intense, desperate need to feed me himself. He had missed me so much; the cold shadow kingpin who ruled the global underworld looked like a man starving just to hold my anchor.
But Section E wasn't having it.
"Drop the spoon, Watson," Felix muttered, stepping right into Keifer's space without a shred of fear, intercepting his hand. "You're too tense. Your hands are shaking from holding back an apocalypse for twelve hours. You're going to spill it on her."
"I can feed my own fiancée, Felix," Keifer growled, his pitch-black eyes burning with a lethal promise that would have made anyone else in the world run for their life.
"Not today, you can't," Blaster added, effortlessly sliding the bowl out of Keifer's grip while Angelo smoothly stepped in between Keifer and the bed, completely blocking his path with a protective brotherly wall.
"Let the boys handle it, Keifer. You just hold her hand," Angelo said, his voice thick with emotion as he leaned down, gently squeezing my ankle under the heavy blankets. "Look at her. She needs absolute gentleness right now, not your terrifying aura radiating next to her face."
I watched them bicker in low, hushed whispers, a tiny, watery smile finally breaking through my bruised, swollen lips. Ci.n carefully took the spoon, blowing on the broth with ridiculous precision before feeding me a tiny, warm spoonful, while Denzel subtly adjusted the pillows behind my back, and Aries watched from the corner, a genuine, ragged breath of relief escaping his chest.
Keifer let out a heavy, defeated sigh, but he didn't argue further. He slowly sat back down on the edge of the mattress, his massive, calloused hand immediately wrapping back over mine, his thumb smoothing over my scratches with an absolute, fierce devotion. He looked completely possessive, his dead eyes refusing to look away from my face for even a fraction of a second.
I squeezed his fingers back with the tiny bit of strength I had left, leaning my head back against the pillows as Section E systematically pampered me, completely refusing to let me lift a single finger. The physical pain was still there, and the trauma of the dark basement would take time to heal, but looking at the wall of men surrounding my bed, I knew the nightmares had officially lost. I was completely safe in the light.
Keifer's POV
Seeing her small fingers weakly tighten around mine was a sensation that nearly brought me to my knees. The suffocating, iron-tight grip that had been locking my lungs since the moment she disappeared finally cracked open, letting me draw a full breath of air.
I leaned closer, my pitch-black eyes fixed entirely on her face.
She looked so agonizingly pale. Her skin was almost translucent under the dim, soft amber light of the room, contrasting sharply with the deep, angry purple bruises blooming across her jawline and the stark white bandage wrapped around her head. Yet, even broken, even bruised and fragile, she was the most breathtakingly beautiful thing I had ever laid eyes on. She was my queen, my light, the single thing that kept the ruthless, cold monster inside my chest anchored to a shred of humanity.
As Section E swarmed around her like a protective wall of billionaires—Calix blowing on the warm broth with ridiculous precision, Yuri carefully holding the straw to her mouth, and Angelo anchoring her feet—a tiny, watery smile broke through her swollen, cracked lips.
My heart gave a heavy, violent thud against my ribs. But as I leaned in, tracking that small movement, the relief in my veins turned to ash.
Her smile didn't match her eyes.
The curved, brave line of her lips was completely betrayed by the expression in her dilated pupils. When she looked around the room, there was a profound, suffocating layer of physical pain and lingering terror drowning out the light in her eyes. I could see the raw, deep-seated fear of the dark basement still clawing at the edges of her sanity, a quiet horror reflecting in her gaze as if she was terrified the sterile hospital room would vanish and plunge her back into the clutches of her childhood nightmares. She was trying so hard to be the fierce, stubborn Section E ulupong we all knew, trying to force an attitude to ease her brothers' guilt, but her eyes were completely stripped of their usual pride. They were filled with an agonizing vulnerability, a silent, heartbreaking whisper of a girl who had just been forced to face her worst demons alone.
A fresh, volatile surge of residual mafia wrath flared deep in my chest. My jaw clenched into iron, and my fingers tightened around hers with a fierce, absolute possessiveness that made Felix glance at me warningly. I wanted to turn back around, march straight back to that concrete bunker, and make sure her stepbrothers screamed until their vocal cords tore to bloody ribbons all over again. They had taught her how to look this fragile. They had put that haunting, broken look into her eyes.
I slowly leaned down, completely ignoring the low bickering of the boys around us, until my lips gently brushed against the back of her shivering knuckles.
"Don't force it, my heart," I whispered into the quiet space between us, my gravelly voice dropping into a low, private vibration meant entirely for her ears. My intense, unblinking gaze locked onto her painful eyes, bleeding every ounce of my life force and absolute devotion into her soul. "You don't have to be strong right now. You don't have to hide the pain from me. I am right here. Focus only on my voice. The monsters are dead, and I am never letting the shadows touch your eyes again."
A tiny, genuine tear escaped her eyelid, tracking slowly down her pale cheek, but the heavy, panicked tension in her shoulders finally began to dissolve. She let her head sink deeper into the soft pillows, her fingers curling tighter into my palm as she anchored herself completely to my warmth, allowing the wall of men around her to finally shield her from the dark.
