Friday arrived with deceptive normalcy.
Alexander left for work early, kissing Emma goodbye with a lingering tenderness that made her guilt spike. "I have meetings until six. Dinner tonight?"
"Actually, I have a foundation thing. Donor meeting." The lie tasted like ash. "Don't wait up if I'm late."
"Okay. Love you."
"Love you too."
Emma watched him leave, then spent the morning in agitated pacing. The dinner with Voss was at eight. She had ten hours to either back out or commit fully.
At noon, her phone rang. An unknown number.
"Mrs. Sterling, this is Detective Lisa Chang with the NYPD Financial Crimes Unit. Do you have a moment?"
Emma's stomach dropped. "Yes. What's this about?"
"We've been investigating Marcus Voss's financial activities. Your husband's legal team provided us with information about potential tax evasion and fraud. We'd like to ask you some questions about your interactions with Mr. Voss."
