The night should have felt peaceful.
After the ritual, the valley was quiet in a way it hadn't been for weeks. The wind moved softly through the tall pine trees surrounding the pack house, carrying the scent of earth and moonlight.
But Damon Blackwood knew better.
Peace after a challenge never meant victory.
It meant the enemy was preparing something worse.
He stood on the balcony of the Alpha house, staring out over the territory. Below him, wolves moved through the grounds, some laughing, some talking quietly.
They believed the ritual had ended the threat.
Damon could still feel it.
The shadow beneath the land had not disappeared.
It had changed.
Behind him, the door creaked open.
Kella stepped out.
Her long dark hair moved slightly in the wind as she joined him at the railing.
"You feel it too," she said softly.
Damon nodded.
"Yes."
Kella rested her elbows on the railing, staring into the forest.
"My wolf is restless."
"That makes two of us."
For a moment neither of them spoke.
The bond between them pulsed faintly, like a quiet heartbeat.
Since the ritual, their connection had grown stronger — stronger than either of them expected.
Kella's lunar power balanced Damon's Alpha dominance.
But balance didn't mean safety.
It meant responsibility.
Suddenly Damon's head snapped toward the forest.
His wolf growled inside his chest.
Kella felt it instantly.
"What is it?"
Damon's eyes narrowed.
"Something just crossed the eastern boundary."
Kella stiffened.
"Rogue?"
"No."
His voice lowered.
"Pack wolf."
Her eyes widened.
"That's impossible. The patrols would have reported—"
A sudden howl cut through the night.
But it wasn't a warning howl.
It was something else.
Wild.
Distorted.
Damon's body tensed instantly.
"That's Rowan."
Kella frowned.
"The patrol leader?"
"Yes."
Another howl echoed.
Then another.
And another.
Soon the forest was filled with chaotic wolf cries.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Damon turned sharply.
"Stay here."
Kella grabbed his arm before he could move.
"No."
His golden eyes met hers.
"It could be dangerous."
"I know."
Her voice was firm.
"But whatever that thing beneath the land is doing… I can feel it."
Damon studied her for a moment.
Her lunar power flickered beneath the surface like silver fire.
Finally he nodded.
"Stay close to me."
They ran.
The moment Damon hit the ground outside the pack house, wolves rushed toward him.
"Alpha!" one of the warriors shouted.
"What's happening?"
The warrior's face was pale.
"We don't know! The eastern patrol started acting strange. Rowan attacked one of his own wolves!"
Damon's eyes darkened.
"That doesn't happen."
"No, Alpha."
Another howl echoed from the forest.
Closer this time.
And it sounded…
Unstable.
Kella shivered slightly.
"That's not normal wolf rage."
Damon nodded grimly.
"No."
He turned to the warriors.
"Get the pack inside the main grounds. No one goes near the eastern forest."
"Yes Alpha!"
The warriors ran.
But Damon already knew something.
It was too late.
A massive wolf burst from the tree line.
Its fur was dark grey — Rowan.
But his eyes…
They were black.
Not golden.
Not red.
Black like a starless void.
The wolf snarled viciously and lunged at the nearest warrior.
Damon moved faster.
He shifted mid-step, bones cracking and reforming as his enormous black wolf slammed into Rowan's side.
The impact sent both wolves rolling across the ground.
Kella gasped as Rowan snapped wildly, foam at his jaws.
His movements were wrong.
Jerky.
Uncontrolled.
Damon pinned him down with sheer strength.
But Rowan didn't recognize him.
The possessed wolf kept fighting like a creature driven purely by instinct.
Kella's mind raced.
"This isn't natural!"
Lyra appeared beside her suddenly.
"What's happening?!"
Kella looked at Rowan's black eyes.
Then realization hit her.
"The shadow."
Lyra frowned.
"What?"
"It's not attacking Damon anymore."
Kella's voice dropped.
"It's attacking the pack."
Across the clearing, more wolves emerged from the forest.
Four.
Five.
Seven.
All of them had the same black eyes.
Damon's wolf froze for half a second.
That hesitation was enough.
Rowan broke free and leaped away.
Now the infected wolves surrounded the clearing.
Low growls filled the night.
The rest of the pack gathered behind Damon.
Fear spread through them.
Not fear of rogues.
Fear of their own wolves.
Kella stepped forward slowly.
Her silver aura flickered.
Damon's wolf turned toward her.
Don't come closer.
But Kella ignored him.
"These wolves aren't themselves."
The infected wolves snarled louder.
The black in their eyes flickered like living smoke.
"They're being controlled."
Lyra whispered,
"By the shadow?"
Kella nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Damon shifted back into human form.
His voice was deadly calm.
"It learned something during the ritual."
Kella looked at him.
"What?"
"That it can't break me."
His eyes hardened.
"So it's breaking my pack instead."
The possessed wolves suddenly attacked.
The clearing exploded into chaos.
Warriors shifted instantly, forming a defensive wall.
But the infected wolves fought like monsters.
They didn't feel pain.
They didn't hesitate.
Kella's heart pounded.
"We can't just kill them!"
Damon dodged a snapping wolf and slammed it aside.
"I know!"
One wolf leaped straight for Kella.
Before anyone could react—
A burst of silver light erupted from her body.
The wolf froze mid-air.
Then crashed to the ground unconscious.
The clearing went silent.
Even Damon stared.
Kella blinked in shock.
"I… didn't mean to do that."
Lyra whispered,
"Your lunar power."
The silver light faded slowly.
But the unconscious wolf's eyes…
Were no longer black.
The shadow had been pushed out.
Damon realized something instantly.
"Kella…"
She looked at him.
"You can break the corruption."
But across the clearing…
The remaining infected wolves suddenly turned toward her.
Their black eyes burned with hatred.
The shadow had realized something too.
And now…
It wanted her dead.
