Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Man Who Measured Mana

The scholar introduced himself as Elias.

A polite smile. Soft voice. Simple robes.

No emblem.

No insignia.

But his mana was layered like reinforced steel.

Compressed. Controlled. Concealed.

He was not here by accident.

Kael knew it.

And Elias knew something too.

The village welcomed him easily.

Travelers were rare but not suspicious.

He claimed to be researching regional mana density shifts. Sister Lily offered him a small room without hesitation.

Observation Haki confirmed it.

His explanation was not entirely false.

But it was incomplete.

He wasn't studying the village.

He was studying a fluctuation.

Kael avoided him for two days.

Not out of fear.

Out of patience.

Observation extended constantly, mapping Elias' movements.

The man walked through fields.

Paused near the forest entrance.

Stood behind the church longer than necessary.

He was triangulating something.

Good.

Let him search.

On the third evening, Elias approached Kael directly.

No crowd.

No witnesses.

The sun was low, casting long shadows across the grass.

"You're Kael, correct?"

Polite tone.

Calm pulse.

But beneath it—

Focused attention.

"Yes."

Elias studied him openly now.

Observation Haki expanded automatically.

Kael felt it clearly—

Elias was scanning him.

Not physically.

Through mana perception.

There was a subtle probing pressure in the air.

Like invisible fingers brushing against his outline.

Kael stood still.

Armament did not activate.

Observation did not flare.

He remained empty.

To mana—

He was a blank space.

Elias' eyes sharpened slightly.

"Interesting," he murmured.

"What is?" Kael asked.

"You truly have no mana."

Not mocking.

Not dismissive.

Genuine intrigue.

"That's not rare," Kael replied evenly.

"It is," Elias said quietly. "What's rare is surviving without it."

Silence settled between them.

Elias shifted topics smoothly.

"Tell me… have you noticed anything unusual in the forest recently?"

There it was.

Kael's heartbeat remained steady.

"Unusual how?"

"Disturbances. Beasts acting strangely. Mana behaving… irregularly."

So the capital felt the corruption too.

Kael shrugged lightly.

"I don't go deep into the forest."

A lie.

Elias smiled faintly.

"Of course."

He stepped closer.

Not threatening.

But deliberate.

"You see," Elias continued softly, "a small ripple occurred recently. Minor. Almost insignificant."

Observation detected no deception.

"But ripples do not form without cause."

He looked directly into Kael's eyes.

"And sometimes, the cause is not what we expect."

Pressure increased slightly.

Not magical attack.

More like a test.

Elias released a subtle wave of mana perception.

Broader than before.

Sharper.

It washed over Kael fully this time.

Most people would feel nothing.

But Observation translated it clearly.

He was searching for abnormal response.

Kael did nothing.

He didn't resist.

Didn't react.

Didn't flare Conqueror's instinctively.

He simply stood.

Empty.

The wave passed.

Elias blinked once.

Confusion flickered beneath composure.

"Fascinating," he whispered.

Kael tilted his head slightly.

"What is?"

Elias chuckled softly.

"Forgive me. Academic curiosity."

He stepped back.

The probing stopped.

But his interest had doubled.

Kael could feel it.

That night, the system activated.

[External Threat Assessment: Low]Subject: Elias – Rank Estimated: Senior Magic Knight]Recommendation: Continue Concealment]New Directive Generated]

Kael focused.

[Directive: Controlled Exposure Test]Objective: Release Minor Conqueror Pulse Within 30m Radius]Condition: No Civilian Casualties]Reward: Conqueror Stabilization +3%]

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

Controlled exposure.

So the system wanted data too.

If Elias was measuring mana—

Then perhaps it was time to measure his reaction.

Not full power.

Just a ripple.

The opportunity came sooner than expected.

Late night.

Village quiet.

Elias stood alone near the forest edge, examining faint mana residue from the corrupted wolf's death.

His expression had grown more serious.

He crouched near the ground.

"Something erased this corruption," he murmured.

"Not purified."

"Erased."

Kael stepped into the clearing.

Elias didn't turn immediately.

"I had a feeling you might come," he said calmly.

Observation confirmed it.

He had sensed approach through environmental mana shifts.

Impressive.

"Looking for something?" Kael asked.

"Understanding," Elias corrected.

He stood slowly.

Wind moved lightly through the trees.

Silence deepened.

Kael inhaled.

Conqueror's Haki was not like Observation.

It did not analyze.

It imposed.

He didn't release it violently.

He didn't flare it outward.

He simply allowed a fraction of his will to expand.

Not emotion.

Not anger.

Dominance.

The air tightened subtly.

Leaves trembled.

Elias' pupils contracted instantly.

For the first time—

His mana spiked defensively.

"What… was that?" he whispered.

The pressure lasted only a second.

Then vanished completely.

No visible damage.

No shockwave.

Just a pulse.

But Elias had felt it.

Clearly.

And unlike mana—

He could not trace its source.

His perception searched frantically for magical explanation.

There was none.

He looked at Kael slowly.

Not suspicious.

Certain.

"You," he said quietly.

Kael met his gaze without hesitation.

"You felt something?" he asked calmly.

Elias did not answer.

Because answering would mean admitting he did not understand.

And senior knights were not used to that feeling.

After several seconds, he exhaled.

"…Interesting."

That word again.

But this time—

It carried weight.

"I will be staying in Hage a little longer," Elias said finally.

Kael nodded.

"Of course."

They stood in silence beneath the moon.

Two observers.

Both collecting data.

Both hiding truths.

But one fact had been established.

Mana could not explain Haki.

And that unsettled the kingdom more than open rebellion ever could.

As Elias walked back toward the village, his steps were slower.

Thoughtful.

For the first time in years—

He had encountered something that did not register within the laws of magic.

Back in the forest clearing, the system updated.

[Directive Completed]Conqueror Stabilization: 6%]Capital Interest Level: Rising]

Kael looked toward the distant horizon.

So it begins.

Not battle.

Not war.

Investigation.

Suspicion.

Adjustment.

Good.

He preferred slow games.

Because by the time the board was visible—

He would already control half of it.
