Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Thing That Should Not Exist

Elias did not leave.

Three days passed.

He continued playing the role of harmless scholar.

Polite. Curious. Mild.

But Observation Haki told a different story.

His mana patterns had changed.

Less relaxed.

More guarded.

He wasn't just observing the village anymore.

He was waiting.

For confirmation.

Kael continued his routine.

Morning chores.

Afternoon labor.

Night training.

Nothing outwardly different.

But inside—

Progress climbed steadily.

Observation Haki – 41%Armament – 23%Conqueror – 6% Stabilized

He could now maintain Armament for nearly ten seconds without tremor.

Observation extended beyond the forest edge safely.

And Conqueror—

He kept sealed.

Mostly.

The corruption moved first.

It happened just past midnight.

Kael was awake.

He felt it immediately.

A distortion.

Not one signature.

Many.

Small.

Spreading.

Observation expanded sharply.

At least five corrupted presences.

Fast.

Heading toward the village perimeter.

So it wasn't random infection.

It was coordinated movement.

And then—

He felt something deeper behind them.

Watching.

Guiding.

Cold.

Ancient.

Not fully present.

But aware.

His expression hardened.

So the forest had reacted to the wolf.

And now it was testing.

The first scream cut through the night.

Livestock enclosure.

Kael was already moving.

Elias emerged from the guest quarters simultaneously.

So he felt it too.

Mana flared across the village as adults scrambled to respond.

The corrupted beasts burst through fencing—wolves and boars, veins glowing faint black beneath fur.

Their movements were unnatural.

Not rabid.

Directed.

Kael didn't hesitate.

Observation flared.

He stepped between two villagers and an incoming beast.

Armament coated his leg.

A clean kick shattered its skull instantly.

No mana explosion.

No spell circle.

Just force.

Elias saw it.

Clearly.

His mana perception locked onto Kael.

The second beast lunged from the side.

Kael pivoted and struck again.

Armament held firm.

Corrupted mana dispersed violently upon impact.

Like smoke repelled by invisible pressure.

Villagers began casting defensive spells.

But their attacks were clumsy.

Corruption twisted mana.

Deflection wasn't enough.

You had to break it.

Yuno arrived next.

Wind blades sliced through a charging boar.

Precise.

Clean.

But when the blade met corrupted mana—

It resisted.

Slowed.

Not immune.

But stubborn.

Yuno noticed.

So did Kael.

Different reactions.

Important detail.

Then—

The air shifted.

Heavy.

Thick.

The deeper presence pressed closer.

Not physically emerging.

Projecting.

A pulse rippled through the corrupted beasts.

They grew more aggressive instantly.

Faster.

Stronger.

Elias stepped forward, dropping the scholar act completely.

Mana erupted around him in structured layers.

A true Magic Knight.

High rank.

He cast a large-scale binding spell.

Multiple beasts froze mid-charge.

Impressive control.

But even his magic faltered slightly against corruption.

Kael made a decision.

He stepped forward.

Conqueror's Haki expanded—not explosively.

Controlled.

Focused only on the corrupted beasts.

Dominance intent.

Erase.

The pulse rolled outward silently.

The beasts staggered.

Their corrupted mana destabilized violently.

For a brief second—

The deeper presence behind them reacted.

Not fear.

Recognition.

It felt him.

Elias felt it too.

His head snapped toward Kael.

"What are you—"

Before he finished—

The distant presence withdrew instantly.

Severed connection.

The corrupted beasts collapsed lifelessly.

Not killed by magic.

Not purified.

Disconnected.

Silence fell over the village.

Only heavy breathing remained.

Villagers stared at Elias in awe.

At Yuno with admiration.

No one noticed Kael stepping back into shadow.

Except one person.

Elias.

Their eyes met across the clearing.

This time there was no confusion in Elias' gaze.

Only certainty.

"You are the anomaly," he said quietly.

Not accusation.

Conclusion.

Kael didn't deny it.

Didn't confirm it.

He simply asked,

"What were those?"

Elias studied him carefully.

"…Not natural."

A pause.

"Devil influence, perhaps."

The word hung heavy.

Devil.

So corruption had a name.

Good.

Now it had direction.

Yuno approached, wind still circling him protectively.

He looked between Elias and Kael.

"You felt that too," Yuno said quietly.

Not to Elias.

To Kael.

Kael nodded once.

No more.

That was enough.

Three observers now shared the same battlefield.

But only one understood the difference in power systems.

Later that night—

Elias sent a message spell toward the capital.

Encrypted.

Urgent.

"Confirmed. Hage Village disturbance not purely demonic.Unknown force present.Does not register as mana.Recommend discreet captain-level review."

Far away—

In a chamber lined with grimoires—

A captain read the message silently.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Something outside the mana spectrum?"

Interest sparked.

Not fear.

Interest.

Back in Hage—

Kael stood alone once more behind the church.

Observation extended gently.

The deeper presence in the forest remained distant now.

Cautious.

It had tested him.

And learned.

Just as he had.

The system updated softly.

[Large-Scale Conqueror Usage Detected]Stabilization: 14%]Devil Awareness Level: Activated]New Threat Tier Unlocked]

Kael exhaled slowly.

So now devils knew.

And captains would soon know.

Good.

The board was no longer quiet.

The real game had started.

And he was no longer just training in the dark.

He was becoming a variable the world could not categorize.
