Chapter 42 - A Grateful Farewell

Ava's POV

The hatch opened into a parking garage.

She came up through the floor of it and stood on concrete under fluorescent lights and breathed air that smelled like oil and cold and the particular staleness of enclosed spaces, and it was the best air she had ever breathed because it was not tunnel air and there was no one in it trying to kill her.

Leo came up behind her.

Then Cho, half-carrying Reeves, who was more awake now she could see it in his eyes, the returning focus of someone climbing back up from unconsciousness and not enjoying the view on the way.

Cho lowered the hatch. Looked at Leo. "Seal it."

Leo crouched and did something to the mechanism that she didn't watch because she was watching the garage. Three levels visible from here, cars parked in ordinary rows, the distant sound of the city outside the structure. Nobody visible.

Nobody visible didn't mean nobody there. She had learned that.
