Nash was the stationmaster of a relay station in the Llica Plains, a position considered quite lucrative within House Silver. A stationmaster was responsible for distributing aid to the slaves, deducting a portion of the harvest when necessary, and maintaining at least twelve Wind Chasing Horses or Flame Colts for carrying messages between relay stations. These mounts received much finer feed than the ordinary Scaled Wildebeasts, and that feed was one of the things Nash regularly embezzled.
Such corruption was almost an open secret throughout the duchy.
Most stationmasters were House members or relatives of the House, and the position offered plenty of opportunities to earn extra gold through small acts of embezzlement. House Silver generally tolerated it as long as the relay stations continued operating normally and the number of slave deaths remained within acceptable limits. If either condition was seriously violated, however, the House would impose heavy punishment.
