Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: Shadows on the Mountain Path**

**Chapter 29: Shadows on the Mountain Path**

The decision was made at dawn.

The family gathered in the grand study—Lan still pale but steady, Mei with her sword propped against the table, Jian pacing slowly, Duan Wei and Huo Yan standing guard at the doors. Lin Xue—newly arrived aunt—sat at the head of the table, the black jade token resting in front of her like a silent promise.

Lin Chen spoke first.

"We go to Wuyi. Tonight. The second fragment and the Sovereign Codex are too valuable to leave unguarded. If the Black Frost Sect reaches it first, they'll have a path to refine the Core without destroying it—turning our binding into their ascension fuel. We can't allow that."

Su Wanqing nodded—silver mark faintly glowing under her sleeve.

"The mansion stays defended. Grandfather's retainers plus the wards we've reinforced. Lan—you stay here with Mei and Jian. No arguments."

Lan opened her mouth—then closed it, nodding reluctantly.

"I'll train harder. Be ready when you come back."

Mei placed a hand on her shoulder.

"We'll hold the home front. The binding link will let us know if anything goes wrong."

Lin Xue looked at Lin Chen.

"The vault is deep in the Wuyi range—old clan territory, now overgrown and warded by natural yin formations. The entrance is hidden beneath a waterfall called 'Moon Mirror Falls.' Only a bloodline key opens it—five drops from the bound five. We'll need all of us there eventually, but for now… you, Wanqing, and I go ahead. Secure the perimeter. Clear any scouts."

Duan Wei grunted.

"I'm coming. Huo Yan too. Extra blades and eyes."

Huo Yan inclined his head—fan closed.

"I know Black Frost tactics. They favor ambush and corruption. I can counter their yin-devouring arrays."

Lin Chen met Huo Yan's gaze—still wary, but accepting.

"You come. But one wrong move—"

"Understood."

Jian stepped forward.

"I should go too. My clones can scout ahead."

Lin Chen shook his head.

"You stay with Lan and Mei. The mansion can't lose its defense. If the Black Frost sends a diversion here while we're away… we lose everything."

Jian clenched his fist—then nodded.

"Fine. But if you need reinforcements—call. The link will carry the message."

Lin Chen looked at each face—family now, forged in battle and ritual.

"We leave at dusk. Two vehicles. Low profile. No qi flares until necessary."

The day passed in quiet preparation.

Lan trained lightly with Jian in the courtyard—shadow steps and basic clones, rebuilding confidence after the purge.

Mei packed yin crystals, healing salves, and the clan sword—old but humming with power.

Su Wanqing handled the Su Group remotely—delegating, covering absences, ensuring no questions from the outside world.

Lin Chen spent the afternoon in the basement—meditating before the stabilized seal fragment. The binding link hummed steadily—five pulses in perfect rhythm. He pushed gently—testing Dominion's edge. Shadows rose—forming a small, perfect dome around him. No cracks. No hunger.

He opened his eyes—gold flecks brighter now.

"Almost," he murmured.

At dusk, they departed.

Lin Chen drove the Bentley with Su Wanqing and Lin Xue. Duan Wei and Huo Yan followed in the SUV.

The road north wound through darkening countryside—city lights fading, stars emerging sharp and cold.

Lin Xue spoke from the back seat—voice low.

"The Black Frost Sect was once an ally. Before the massacre. They sought yin knowledge—peaceful exchange. Then the Azure Flame poisoned the alliance—spread rumors, framed us for betrayals. When the clan fell, Black Frost turned. They believe we hoarded the Core's power selfishly. That we deserve to be stripped of it."

Su Wanqing glanced back.

"So this isn't just greed. It's resentment."

Lin Xue nodded.

"Resentment makes enemies dangerous. They won't stop at taking the Codex. They'll want retribution."

Lin Chen's eyes stayed on the road.

"Then we give them neither."

Hours later—deep in the Wuyi foothills—the road narrowed to a dirt track. Mist rose from the valleys. Moonlight silvered the leaves.

The signature pulsed stronger—close now.

Lin Chen pulled over near a narrow trailhead—sign barely visible: Moon Mirror Falls, 3 km.

They stepped out—shadows cloaking them instinctively.

Lin Xue inhaled.

"The vault is beneath the falls. But the Black Frost is already here. I sense three Core Formation scouts. And one Nascent Soul mid-stage—watching."

Lin Chen's domain flickered open—small, controlled.

"Fan out. Silent. We take the scouts first. No alarms."

They moved—ghosts in the mist.

Lin Chen and Su Wanqing took the left flank—shadow steps silent.

Duan Wei and Huo Yan right.

Lin Xue center—leading toward the falls.

The first scout appeared—black cloak blending with night, yin-devouring rod in hand—probing the trail.

Lin Chen struck—Phantom Step—shadow blade at the scout's throat before he could react.

The man froze.

Lin Chen whispered.

"Where is your master?"

The scout sneered—violet light flaring in his eyes.

"Too late. The vault is breached."

A distant roar echoed from the falls—rock cracking, water surging unnaturally.

Lin Chen's face hardened.

He knocked the scout unconscious—shadow chains binding him.

He signaled the others.

The vault was under attack.

They ran—full speed now—shadows trailing like wings.

Moon Mirror Falls appeared ahead—water cascading from a high cliff into a moonlit pool. But the water glowed wrong—violet threads weaving through the flow.

At the base—two more scouts and a tall figure in frost-gray robes—Nascent Soul mid-stage—hand pressed to the cliff face. A black rift had opened in the rock—leading downward.

The figure turned—eyes glowing pale blue.

"Shadow heir. You're late."

Lin Chen stopped at the pool's edge—domain snapping full open.

Shadows flooded the clearing—darkening the moonlit water.

The Nascent Soul smiled—frost qi condensing around him.

"I am Leng Yun of Black Frost. The Codex will be ours. The Core will be refined. And your clan… ends here."

Lin Chen raised one hand.

Shadows rose—towering.

"Then come take it."

The rift pulsed—violet light spilling out.

The battle for the second fragment began.
