Chapter 34 - *Chapter 34: Fractured Harmony**

**Chapter 34: Fractured Harmony**

The first week of stage two passed in near-silent devotion.

Every dawn, the five gathered in the basement chamber—sitting cross-legged in the same pentagon, knees brushing, hands resting lightly on each other's shoulders. No words. No distractions. Just breath.

Inhale—five lungs drawing yin qi from the air, the mansion, the distant Core.

Exhale—five streams merging into one seamless flow, cycling through the binding link like blood through a single heart.

At first, the harmony felt mechanical—each mind still walled off, each emotion guarded. Lin Chen felt only his own steady pulse. Su Wanqing sensed faint echoes of his calm resolve. Lan caught glimpses of Mei's quiet guilt. Jian felt Lan's lingering fear. Mei sensed Jian's hidden loneliness.

But by day four—something shifted.

During the morning session, Lin Chen felt a sudden, sharp pang in his chest—not his own pain. A memory that wasn't his: a young Lan, nine years old, hiding in a snow cave in Changbai, stomach empty, hearing distant footsteps of hunters, whispering to herself, *"They'll come back. They have to."*

The image hit him like a blade.

He opened his eyes—breaking the cycle.

Lan's eyes were wet—wide with shock.

She felt it too—the bleed-through.

"I… I didn't mean to—"

Lin Chen reached across—hand on her knee.

"It's okay. It's supposed to happen. The Codex said emotions would come first. We share everything now. Good and bad."

Su Wanqing's voice was soft.

"I felt your resolve, Lin Chen. Like steel. It helped me push through my own doubt this morning."

Mei nodded slowly.

"I felt Jian's loneliness. And Lan's fear. It… hurts. But it also heals. We carry it together."

Jian looked down—clones flickering uncertainly.

"I always hid it. Thought no one needed to know. Now… you all do."

Lan wiped her eyes—small smile breaking through.

"I felt everyone's strength. Yours, brother. Wanqing-jie's warmth. Aunt Mei's calm. Jian's protectiveness. It made the fear smaller."

Lin Chen exhaled.

"Then we keep going. The bleed-through is progress. Stage two isn't just breathing. It's learning to live with each other inside our heads."

They resumed—deeper this time.

By day seven—the bleed was constant, gentle, overwhelming.

Lin Chen felt Su Wanqing's quiet pride every time she looked at Lan.

Su Wanqing felt Lin Chen's fierce protectiveness like a warm shield around her heart.

Lan felt Mei's guilt turn to hope—felt Jian's loneliness ease when he sensed the others nearby.

Jian felt Lan's courage—raw, bright—bolstering his own.

Mei felt the circle close—guilt no longer a solitary weight.

They ended each session exhausted—but closer.

That night—after the session—Lin Chen and Su Wanqing sat alone on the rooftop balcony.

The city sparkled below—Huangpu River a ribbon of light.

Su Wanqing leaned against him—head on his shoulder.

"I felt your fear today," she said quietly. "Not for yourself. For us. For what happens if the union fails."

Lin Chen nodded—arm around her.

"I've lost family once. I won't lose it again. Not even to eternity."

She lifted her head—meeting his eyes.

"We won't fail. Because we're not doing this for power. We're doing it for each other."

He kissed her forehead—lingering.

"Together."

She smiled—small, real.

"Together."

Inside the mansion—Lan sat by the window in her room—shadows curling playfully around her fingers.

No violet. No whispers.

Just quiet strength.

And the faint, growing sense of four other heartbeats—always there.

Always close.

But far to the north—in the frozen halls of Black Frost—a new figure stood before Leng Yun.

Taller. Older. Frost qi so dense it cracked the stone beneath his feet.

Nascent Soul peak—late stage.

Voice like cracking glacier.

"The Codex is in Shanghai. The union begins."

Leng Yun knelt.

"We strike now—before stage two completes."

The elder smiled—cold, certain.

"No. We wait. Let them deepen the bond. The deeper the union… the more devastating when we shatter it."

He raised one hand—frost qi condensing into a perfect ice needle—violet corruption threaded through its core.

"Send the Reapers. Target the emotional weak point."

Leng Yun's eyes gleamed.

"The youngest?"

The elder nodded.

"Break her heart. Break them all."

In the mansion—Lan suddenly shivered—shadows flickering uneasily.

She looked north—unaware.

But the link trembled—just once.

A warning.

The Reapers were coming.
