Chapter 170 - Chapter 169 : Kandarian demons

"Wait... wait. How can that be possible? We're talking about time travel. That's not possible, right? And you're saying a damn book did this?" Sam asked, still struggling to accept what they'd just learned.

He looked around the cabin again, as if the surroundings might somehow prove Ash wrong.

Dean shook his head. "Well, we've got a pretty big problem with that theory, Sammy." He pointed at Ash.

"Unless this guy's been sitting in this cabin since 1981 and somehow forgot to mention the last twenty-seven years, I'd say the evidence is pretty damn convincing."

"Dean, I'm serious. Time travel isn't exactly something you just stumble into."

Dean looked at the Necronomicon. "Neither are demons, ghosts, angels, or half the other crap we've dealt with." He picked up the book, eyeing it with suspicion.

"And right now, we've got a magic book that dragged us through some kind of portal. So yeah, I'm thinking the impossible just happened."

Sam rubbed his forehead. "That's not helping."

Dean shrugged and glanced over at Henry, who was holding his head with both hands.

"We are seriously fucked," Henry said. He had no idea how they were supposed to get back.

The book was written in some kind of gibberish, and without understanding it, there was no way to reopen the portal or find their way back to their own timeline.

Dean walked over and clapped him on the shoulder. "Hey, don't lose hope. We've still got time."

Henry lowered his hands and looked at him. "Yeah, that's easy for you to say."

Ash had been watching the three of them for the last few minutes, growing more confused by the second.

They'd been talking about time travel, angels, demons, and some book like all of it was perfectly ordinary.

For all Ash knew, he'd just been attacked by three guys who'd escaped a mental hospital.

"Okay, can you guys tell me what the hell happened, starting from the beginning?" Sam asked, turning to him.

Ash looked between them and decided explaining was probably easier than trying to figure them out himself.

"All right. It started with this book." He pointed at the Necronomicon.

"My friends and I found it here in the cabin, along with a recording. We played it — there were some words on the tape. Some kind of spell."

Sam glanced immediately at the book.

"After that, things started getting weird. My friends started acting strange, and then their bodies started changing. They turned into these disgusting things and started trying to kill me."

He shook his head, still visibly disturbed.

"That damn book released something. Whatever it was, it possessed them, turned them into monsters, killed all of them. Then it came after me." He pointed at the book again.

"That's where all of this started."

Sam and Dean both looked at the Necronomicon lying in front of Henry.

Neither needed to say it out loud — whatever had happened in this cabin in 1981 was tied to the same book that had just dragged them back in time.

"Well, let's play the recording again," Sam said, eyeing the tape recorder.

Ash stared at him. "Are you out of your damn mind? Playing that thing is what turned this place into hell!"

"I know," Sam said, "but we're already stuck in a hellhole. Maybe the recording tells us how to stop whatever's out there."

Dean nodded. "He's got a point. If this thing started everything, it might tell us how to end it."

Ash looked between them. "You guys really don't know when to quit, do you?"

Dean ignored him and switched on the tape recorder.

It crackled for a few seconds before a man's voice came through.

"My name is Raymond. I'm an ancient history specialist, and this recording concerns the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, also known as the Book of the Dead."

Sam leaned closer, listening intently.

"The Book of the Dead is an ancient book, written long before human civilization. Its pages are made from human skin, and the words are written in human blood. According to my research, the book possesses the power to communicate with demons known as Kandarian demons."

Ash's expression tightened as it continued.

"They reside in an alternate dimension, and reading the passages from this book can allow them to enter our world. Once summoned, they are given permission to possess the living."

The recording crackled and stopped.

"That's where it cuts off," Ash said.

A moment later, the tape continued, the same voice back, more frantic now.

"Yes... it was a mistake. I read the passage from the book. I shouldn't have done it. The demons are angry, and they've taken my wife. There's nothing I can do."

The man's breathing grew heavier.

"Once you're possessed by these demons, there's no way to save you. The only way to kill the possessed is to dismember the body and bury the remains."

The recording ended with a click.

Nobody spoke for a moment.

Dean looked at Ash. "Well, at least now we know how to kill them."

Ash stared at him. "Yeah. That's the good news?"
