Chapter Sixteen: The Realm Remembers
The court did not disperse.
They argued, Not loudly at first. The shock had held them still for a while, But once Elara had been carried out and the broken circle sealed behind the crack stones, the silence cracked.
"She manifested."one of the elders managed to say
"That was not manifestation. That was awakening."
"But It cannot be. That line ended long ago."
"It was destroyed."
Serathiel stood near the center of the chamber, hands folded calmly before her, as if she were not the most unsettled among them.
High Arbiter Malveron struck the base of his staff against the stone floor.
"Enough." He said loudly
The murmurs softened but did not disappear.
Malveron's gaze swept across them. "What we witnessed was not human resonance."
"No," one of the elders said quietly. "It was sovereign resonance."
The word settled heavily.
Serathiel's jaw tightened almost invisibly.
Sovereign. No it can't be, she thought
Another voice spoke from the upper tier. "The last being who carried that current is recorded as extinct."
"He was Executed," someone corrected.
Malveron's eyes darkened. "Do not romanticize history. He was eradicated because he threatened balance."
"And what did we just see," Serathiel asked softly, finally speaking.
All eyes turned to her.
She stepped forward slowly. "A human. Claimed by our ruler. Surviving three trials that should have crushed and killed her. Then we discoverer that the realm does not reject her."
She let the next words land carefully.
"It answers her."
The court murmured among themselves
Malveron studied her. "What do you imply."
"RISK." She said
Another elder leaned forward. "If she carries dormant sovereign blood, then she is not random nor human."
"Bloodlines do not survive extinction unnoticed," someone argued.
"They do if hidden," Serathiel replied.
Her voice was calm and Measured.
But inside, her thoughts were racing.
Hidden for centuries, someone added
If Elara was what they feared she was, then this will be an inconvenience.
Malveron exhaled slowly. "Send for Kaelreth."
Serathiel did not hesitate. "I will call him."
Malveron's gaze lingered on her a moment too long, but he nodded.
She inclined her head and turned away.
As she walked through the halls, her composure did not slip.
But her mind sharpened and raced…
If the realm had answered Elara, then the realm could also be made to doubt her… she thought to herself
Power is not destroyed by strength.
It is destroyed by fear.
And fear spreads easily.
⸻
Elara did not move or budge…she laid still
Her chambers were dim, the curtains drawn halfway to soften the light that filtered through the room.
Kaelreth sat beside her bed.
He had not moved for some time.
Her breathing was steady now. It felt Too steady.
He did not like the stillness.
He rested one hand against the edge of the mattress, close but not touching her.
"You need to wake up," he said quietly.
No response.
His gaze traced her face. There was no silver light now. No wings. No visible sign of what had erupted from her.
If he had not seen it himself, he might have questioned it…
But he had felt it.
The moment the current shifted from the floor to her.
The moment the realm recognized her.
Recognized. He thought
The word made him unsettled..
He leaned back slightly, jaw tight.
This concern was unnecessary.he thought
She was a trial subject, A variable.
Yet when her breathing faltered earlier, something in him had reacted before thought.
He does not react. He's always calculated.
But This was different.
He reached out before he could reconsider and brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
Her skin was warm.
She was Alive and that's what matters..
"You cannot remain unconscious," he murmured. "There are questions I require answers to."
And that was safer to say than what else lingered beneath his thoughts.
Serathiel entered without waiting for permission.
She stopped when she saw him seated so close.
The sight struck her harder than she expected.
"You are summoned," she said.
His hand withdrew at once.
"By whom."
"The High Court."
He stood slowly.
"They fear what they do not understand," she continued.
"As they always have." Kaelreth replied
Serathiel stepped closer to the bed, studying Elara's still form.
"She fractured the resonance circle," she said quietly. "That has not happened in centuries."
"She did not fracture it," Kaelreth replied. "She overwhelmed it."
Serathiel's gaze flickered to him.
"That distinction does not comfort them."
He looked down at Elara once more.
Then back at Serathiel.
"She will remain guarded, No harm should come to her"
"Of course," Serathiel said smoothly.
He hesitated only a second before leaving.
The door closed behind him.
Silence settled.
Serathiel remained where she stood, She studied Elara carefully.
She's So small and fragile but yet the chamber had bent around her.
Serathiel moved closer….
"Who do you think you are" she said softly. "You're not going to win this"
Elara did not respond.
Serathiel extended her hand slowly. A faint shimmer gathered at her fingertips. Not enough to cause visible harm by to weaken her
If Elara's body was still unstable, a slight disruption of energy could weaken her. Slow her recovery. Plant doubt in the court.
It would not kill her but will tilt the balance and they may find her useless again…
Serathiel pressed her fingers lightly against Elara's neck.
A pulse of controlled current slipped beneath the skin.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then the atmosphere changed.
A sharp flash of silver burst outward from Elara's body without warning.
Serathiel was thrown backward violently, slamming into the stone wall.
The silver light did not expand this time.
It hovered close, like a warning.
Elara's breathing never changed.
Serathiel stared at her in disbelief.
The protection had not been conscious.
It had responded on its own.
"What", she said with shock in her eyes as Her jaw tightened.
Footsteps approached rapidly from the corridor.
Serathiel moved instantly.
She rose, smoothing her expression just as two guards entered.
One of them looked at the cracked stone near the wall. "What happened."
Serathiel lowered her hand slowly. "The human servant" she said calmly. "She was Careless with the chamber wards. But I corrected it."
The guards exchanged uneasy glances.
"We will remove her," one said quickly.
"Yes," Serathiel replied. "See that you do."
By the time Kaelreth returned from the High Court, the chamber was quiet again and Elara was calm…
He entered sharply.
"What occurred."
One of the guards bowed. "A human Servant interfered with the chamber barrier. Lady Serathiel intervened."
His gaze moved to Serathiel.
She held it calmly.
"The girl's energy is unstable," she added. "It reacted."
He studied the faint crack in the stone wall.
Then he looked at Elara.
Her breathing was steady.
She looked Unharmed.
His eyes darkened slightly.
"Leave," he ordered.
The guards obeyed immediately.
Serathiel lingered a second longer.
"If she is what they suspect," she said softly, "then been close to her may not be wise."
He did not answer.
She made a fist frustrated, inclined her head and exited.
The door sealed.
Kaelreth remained standing for a long moment, watching her..
Then he exhaled and sat beside the bed once more.
"They believe you carry sovereign blood," he said quietly.
No response.
"The last sovereign resonance nearly fractured the realm."
His hand hovered near hers.
"They destroyed him for it."
Silence.
He leaned forward slightly.
"I should not feel… compelled to protect you."
The admission was barely audible.
He brushed his thumb lightly against her knuckles.
"You are not safe here. Not from them."
His gaze lingered on her lips and before he could stop himself.
He shifted closer.
Too close.
His hand rose again, moving her hair gently away from her cheek.
His expression softened in a way no court had ever seen.
"You asked what you are," he murmured. "I do not know."
His fingers traced lightly along her jaw.
"I do know that whatever you are, the realm recognized it."
He hesitated, and I'm going to find out exactly what you are…
He leaned in Slowly….
He felt drawn.
His breath brushed her skin, as his eyes wanders on her face
He was close enough now that he could feel the warmth of her mouth.
For a fraction of a second, he allowed himself to forget everything, the court, The prophecy, The risk…
And him knowing that this was a mistake.
He knew that.
But still leaned the final inch—
Her eyes opened.
It was Clear and she became Aware.
She looked directly at him, his eyes
He froze.
Their faces were barely apart.
She did not move away.
Neither did he.
Her voice was rough from sleep.
"Were you going to do it again," she asked quietly.
He did not immediately answer.
His hand was still resting against her cheek.
His control felt thin.
"Yes," he said.
No denial this time..
Just the truth.
Her breath caught…
His thumb moved slightly against her skin before he seemed to realize what he was doing.
"I should not," he added.
"But you want to," she whispered.
The air between them felt fragile.
"I do not want weakness," he said.
She swallowed. "Is that what I am."
His gaze sharpened.
"No."
The answer came too quickly like he felt certain.
Something shifted in her expression at that.
She felt Hope,Fear and Desire.
All tangled in one…
His forehead almost touched hers now.
"If you are sovereign," he said quietly, "then you are not weakness."
Her fingers lifted slowly, brushing against his face.
"And if I'm not."
He looked at her like the question mattered more than the court's verdict.
"Then I will decide what you are."
They stared at each other for a split second, and elara closed the space with a kiss, he didn't resist this time, he kissed back, tenderly
Her lips are so soft, he thought
Footsteps echoed faintly in the distance outside the chamber.
Reality returned.
He pulled back abruptly.
But not far enough to undo what had just happened.
Her eyes did not leave his.
"Why are you staying," she asked softly.
He held her gaze.
"Because they fear you."
Her heart skipped a beat.
"And I do not know yet if I should."
The door beyond them shifted as guards moved into position.
The realm was watching.
And for the first time, it was not only watching her.
It was watching him too…
