Chapter 34 - Chapter 34 – Contact

The battlefield was gone.

No distortion.

No Helix signals.

Just empty space where something impossible had just happened.

---

The *Argonaut* drifted near the edge of the former combat zone, running recovery operations. Damaged units were being pulled in, debris cleared, and long-range scans pushed outward for any sign of Helix re-engagement.

Inside the bridge, the atmosphere hadn't settled.

It had sharpened.

"They didn't just retreat," Rika said, scanning new data streams. "They withdrew in perfect formation. No stragglers. No losses beyond Variable Three."

Mira leaned on the console.

"They learned again."

Leon stood nearby, arms crossed.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "But so did we."

---

An alert pinged.

Rika froze.

"…I've got something."

Leon looked up.

"Helix?"

She shook her head slowly.

"No."

She zoomed in.

"A single ship. Minimal signature. It's been sitting just outside our scan range."

Mira's eyes narrowed.

"Watching us?"

Rika nodded.

"It's requesting communication."

---

The bridge went silent.

Leon didn't hesitate.

"Put it through."

---

The screen flickered.

A grainy image resolved into a simple cockpit interior.

And a boy.

Not much older than Leon.

Sharp eyes.

Focused.

Calm.

Flit Asuno.

---

For a moment—

No one spoke.

Two pilots who had just fought side by side…

Finally seeing each other.

---

Flit broke the silence first.

"You're the pilot of the other Gundam."

Leon smirked faintly.

"And you're the one who told me not to blow up a colony."

Mira muttered under her breath, "He was right."

Leon ignored her.

---

Flit studied Leon carefully.

"You rely on instinct," he said.

Leon raised an eyebrow.

"You rely on overthinking."

A pause.

Then—

Flit almost smiled.

"…That's accurate."

---

Rolf stepped forward slightly.

"State your affiliation."

Flit's expression shifted—more formal now.

"Flit Asuno. Acting pilot under the Earth Federation Forces."

Rika's eyes widened slightly.

"The Federation…?"

Leon glanced at her.

"You didn't know?"

"We've had fragmented contact at best," she replied. "Different sectors, limited coordination."

Flit continued.

"I've been tracking Helix Vanguard activity independently."

Leon crossed his arms.

"Same here."

---

Another silence.

But this one was different.

Less cautious.

More… assessing.

---

Flit spoke again.

"They're escalating."

Leon nodded.

"Yeah. We figured that out."

"No," Flit said.

Leon frowned slightly.

"What do you mean?"

Flit brought up a projection on his side of the transmission.

A map.

Multiple sectors.

Each marked with Helix activity points.

"They're not attacking randomly," Flit explained. "They're creating pressure zones."

Rika leaned forward.

"…Converging patterns."

Flit nodded.

"Each operation forces a response. Each response reveals adaptation data."

Leon's eyes narrowed.

"They're mapping us."

"More than that," Flit said.

He highlighted a central region.

"They're herding us."

---

The room went still.

Mira spoke first.

"Herding us… where?"

Flit zoomed in further.

A region of space—dark, uncharted.

No colonies.

No established routes.

Just emptiness.

---

Leon felt it immediately.

"That's where the citadel is," he said.

Flit looked at him.

"You've seen it."

Leon nodded once.

"Yeah."

---

Rolf's voice was low.

"They're pulling every major force toward a single point."

Rika's expression darkened.

"A controlled battlefield…"

Mira finished it.

"A final test."

---

Flit met Leon's gaze through the screen.

"If we follow their pattern, we walk into it."

Leon didn't look away.

"And if we don't?"

Flit's answer was immediate.

"They keep escalating until we have no choice."

---

Silence again.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

---

Leon exhaled slowly.

"So either we walk into their trap…"

"…or we let them control the war," Flit finished.

---

Mira shook her head.

"Those aren't good options."

"No," Leon said.

"They're not."

---

Flit's expression hardened slightly.

"Then we change the equation."

Leon's eyes sharpened.

"How?"

Flit didn't hesitate.

"We go before they're ready."

---

That landed.

Hard.

---

Rika blinked.

"You want to attack the citadel directly?"

Flit nodded.

"Before they complete whatever comes next."

Mira crossed her arms.

"That's insane."

Leon smirked slightly.

"Yeah."

A beat.

"Sounds about right."

---

Flit studied him again.

"You'd take that risk?"

Leon shrugged.

"They're already pushing us there. Might as well hit them first."

---

Another pause.

Then—

Flit nodded.

"Then we coordinate."

---

That was it.

No dramatic declaration.

No handshake.

Just agreement.

---

Rolf stepped forward.

"If we're doing this, we'll need full fleet support."

Flit shook his head.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

"A large fleet will trigger immediate countermeasures," he explained. "We need a strike force. Fast. Precise."

Leon caught on instantly.

"A spear, not a shield."

Flit nodded.

"Exactly."

---

Mira sighed.

"I really hate how well this is starting to make sense."

Rika added quietly,

"…and how dangerous it is."

---

Leon looked back at the screen.

"At least this time, we know who we're flying with."

Flit met his gaze.

"Don't rely on that."

Leon smirked.

"Wasn't planning to."

---

For a moment—

They just looked at each other again.

Not strangers anymore.

Not quite allies.

But something closer.

---

Flit broke the connection first.

"I'll transmit coordinates."

The screen went dark.

---

Silence filled the bridge.

Then—

Mira exhaled loudly.

"Well… that just happened."

Rika nodded slowly.

"We're planning an assault on the Helix stronghold."

Rolf looked at Leon.

"You're leading this."

Leon didn't hesitate.

"Yeah."

---

He turned toward the viewport.

Stars stretched endlessly ahead.

Somewhere out there—

The Helix citadel waited.

And this time—

They weren't being led there.

They were choosing to go.

---

Far away…

Within the depths of Helix space…

The commander observed new data streams.

"Contact between variables confirmed."

Variable Two stood nearby.

"Expected."

The commander turned toward the massive structure nearing completion.

"Then the final phase begins."

---

Back on the *Argonaut*…

Leon clenched his fist slightly.

"Next time…"

He looked toward the stars.

"…we don't just survive."

---

The war was about to shift again.

And this time—

It would be on their terms.
