Chapter 27 - Chapter 28. The Playground

The golden light of the afternoon sun filtered through the canopy of the royal gardens, turning the dew on the leaves into scattered diamonds. Selene stood by a bed of pale moon-lilies, her hands moving with a rhythmic, subconscious grace. Water bubbled from the tips of her fingers, a gentle stream that she guided through the air to the thirsty roots of the plants.

But her mind was miles away, anchored in the memory of the night before. The way the air in the ballroom had seemed to vibrate with the sheer power of Leo's confession.

"He loves me?" she whispered, the words feeling like a foreign language on her tongue. She paused, the water from her hand tapering off into a mist. She turned to a small group of birds perched on a stone birdbath. Joan, the bold little sparrow who had become her constant shadow, flitted over and landed on Selene's shoulder, tilting her head.

"How can that be, Joan?" Selene breathed, her voice a fragile thread of wonder. "I was a ghost for so long. A curse. A target. How could someone like him- a King who has seen everything the world has to offer, look at me and see something worth loving?"

She moved to a nearby rosebush, tracing the velvet curve of a petal. Freddie- the squirrel she called 'Grouchy,' scurried down the trunk of an oak tree, pausing to twitch his nose at her.

"Do I love him?" she asked the air, her brow furrowing. "I mean, I care for him. When he walks into a room, it's like the air gets easier to breathe. When he touches me, I feel... safe. For the first time in my life, I don't feel like I'm waiting for the floor to drop out."

She looked at her animal friends, a motley crew of the palace's wild residents who had gathered around her feet. "Do you guys like him? Be honest."

Joan let out a sharp, melodic chirp and bobbed her head emphatically. Freddie let out a series of quick chatters, which Selene had learned meant a firm "yes." Even Lily, the white deer who usually kept a dignified distance in the tall grass, let out a low, vibrating purr of agreement.

"I don't know if I'm ready to say it," Selene admitted, her heart giving a nervous little skip. "I've spent so long protecting my heart that I don't know how to let it be public. Love... it feels like a big step. A final step."

"I am willing to wait for those three words for as long as it takes."

The voice was a low, resonant baritone that sent a jolt of warmth straight to Selene's core. She didn't jump this time; her body recognized his presence before her mind did. Leo stepped out from the shadows of the stone archway, his eyes dark with a tenderness that made her knees feel weak. He crossed the distance between them, his large, calloused hands sliding around her waist to pull her back against the solid heat of his chest.

"I didn't mean to eavesdrop," he murmured, his breath fanning the silver hair at her temple. "But I felt your confusion through the bond. I just felt like I had to tell you again. Not to pressure you, but because it's the truest thing I've ever known." He leaned down, pressing a lingering, reverent kiss to the top of her head.

Selene felt her internal walls crumble just a little more. She turned in his arms, hiding her face in the crook of his neck, breathing in the scent of cedar, rain, and the unique, spicy tang of his Lycan. She hugged him tightly, as if trying to merge her heartbeat with his.

"You're always so patient with me," she whispered into his shirt. "I'm sorry I'm not there yet. I'm sorry I'm so... slow at this."

A deep, rumbling chuckle started in his chest, vibrating through her entire body. "My little wolf," he said, pulling back to cup her face in his hands. "I have lived for centuries. I have waited for you since the stars were young. I can wait another year, or another hundred, for you to find your voice. No matter how thin my patience wears or how much my Lycan grumbles for his mate to claim him, I will always wait for you."

Selene stood on her tiptoes, pressing a quick, soft kiss to his lips- a silent promise. "Thank you, Leo."

"Anything for you, My Queen," he smiled, the predatory edge of the King replaced by the devotion of the man.

An hour later, Selene found herself walking through the bustling streets of the pack's main village. She had opted for a simple, unassuming dress of pale linen, wanting to blend in, though her silver hair and the way the light seemed to follow her made that nearly impossible.

She had spent her life in shadows, and she wanted to see the light she was supposed to protect. As she moved through the market square, she was struck by the atmosphere. Leo's pack was the wealthiest in the territories, but there was no arrogance here. It was a community built on the bedrock of respect.

She saw a blacksmith teaching a young pup how to swing a hammer; she saw a group of elderly women knitting blankets for the nursery, laughing as they traded gossip. Every person she passed offered her a warm, easy smile. They didn't bow in fear; they nodded in welcome.

"Queen Selene! Is that really you?!"

A high-pitched shriek pierced the air. Selene turned to see a little girl with messy brown pigtails and a face smudged with dirt, staring at her with wide, disbelieving eyes. She couldn't have been more than seven years old.

"It is," Selene smiled, crouching down to the girl's level. "I'm just out for a stroll. Would you like to join me?"

The girl's face lit up like a thousand candles. "A walk? With the Queen? For real?!"

"For real," Selene laughed, standing up and offering her hand. The girl grabbed it instantly, her small, warm fingers squeezing Selene's with surprising strength.

"I'm Jamie!" the girl babbled as they began to walk. "My mom is Lucy and my dad is Luke. He works at the flour mill. Mom told me the Queen was a literal angel but I thought she was just being 'mom-dramatic,' you know?"

Selene chuckled, charmed by the girl's honesty. "Well, I'm definitely not an angel, Jamie. Just a wolf, like you."

"Where are your parents, little one?" Selene asked, looking around.

"At home!" Jamie said, skipping along the cobblestones. "They said I could go to the park. Don't worry, the pack is safe. Everyone watches everyone here. It's like having a hundred moms."

The sense of security in the village was palpable. It was a stark contrast to MoonShine, where every alley felt like a trap. As they passed a storefront, a man stepped out to sweep the rug. He froze, his eyes widening as he saw the future Queen holding the hand of the neighborhood's most energetic child.

"Jamie! Don't make the Queen run, you little terror!" he called out, though his voice was full of affection.

"It's quite alright," Selene called back with a wink. "She's got energy, and I've got magic. I think I can keep up."

The man laughed, shaking his head in disbelief as the two of them hurried toward the local park.

The park was a sprawling green space filled with the sounds of laughter and the rhythmic creak of swings. As they reached the wooden playground, Jamie pulled Selene toward the central tower.

"Will you play with me?" Jamie asked, her eyes pleading. "We're playing Princesses, but the boys are being mean dragons."

"I think a Queen and a Princess can handle a few dragons," Selene said, following her up the stairs.

The other children on the playground went dead silent as Selene climbed onto the wooden platform. The parents sitting on the nearby benches sat up straighter, phones appearing in hands as they captured a sight none of them had ever expected: the legendary White Wolf, the woman who made the King submit, standing in the middle of a game of make-believe.

"I, Ruler of all the lands, banish you from my palace!" Jamie bellowed at a group of boys standing in the sand below.

Selene leaned over the railing, putting on her best "Royal" voice. "But Princess Jamie, a true ruler protects their people, even the grumpy ones. Join our kingdom and rejoice in the safety we offer!" She reached out a hand to a small, stunned-looking boy. "You shall be the Princess's Royal Guard!"

The boy's face transformed from shock to pure glee. He puffed out his chest and stood at attention. "I shall protect the realm!"

Suddenly, a boy with a mop of red hair started making roaring noises, flapping his arms. "I am the ferocious dragon! I'm gonna eat the palace!"

"Oh no!" Jamie shrieked, hiding behind Selene's skirt. "The kingdom is under attack! Protect us, Guard!"

"We don't need protecting!" Selene cried out, her eyes sparking with fun. "We shall defeat the dragon ourselves! To arms!"

With a laugh that rang across the park, Selene jumped off the playground platform- a graceful, effortless leap that landed her in the sand. She chased the "dragon" around the swings, the boy giggling so hard he could barely run.

Finally, she "tripped" on purpose, falling backward into the soft grass and scooping the child up into her arms. "Oh! He is too strong! His dragon scales are too tough!" she cried out, play-fighting with the squirming child.

"I will save you, for I am the Guard!" the first boy bellowed, launching himself into the fray.

As the three of them tumbled in the grass, Selene's laughter was bright and unrestrained. She caught the eye of several parents nearby; they weren't looking at her with fear or suspicion anymore. They were looking at her with a profound, quiet love. They saw a Queen who was willing to get dirt on her dress to make a child smile.

"I am defeated!" the 'dragon' cried, falling dramatically to the turf.

"I shall remember your bravery, dear Guard," Selene panted, giving the little boy a quick, motherly kiss on his cheek. The boy turned bright red and giggled, feeling like the luckiest wolf in the world.

"But wait," Selene whispered, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I think I have gained enough secret strength to make sure the dragon stays cool."

The children crowded around her, their eyes wide. Selene held up her hands, and the moisture from the humid air began to condense. With a flick of her fingers, ribbons of water danced from her palms, weaving through the air like liquid silk.

"Woah!" the kids whispered in unison.

She moved her hands in a circular motion, and the water formed a floating ring above their heads, shimmering in the sunlight like a halo of diamonds. She made it spin, sending a light, refreshing mist over the sweaty, playing children.

"That is so cool!" Jamie squeaked, reaching up to touch the floating stream.

"Yeah," a familiar, feminine voice said from the edge of the grass. "She is pretty cool, isn't she?"

Selene looked up, her hair slightly messy and grass stains on her hem, to see Megan leaning against a tree. The Lycan warrior was smiling, her eyes reflecting a deep sense of pride.

"You have a habit of winning over hearts, Selene," Megan said, walking over and offering a hand to help her up. "First the King, then the Seven, and now the next generation. I think Nik doesn't stand a chance."

Selene stood, brushing the grass from her dress as the children continued to play in the floating water she had left behind. She looked at the happy faces, the peaceful village, and the woman who had become her friend.

"I'm not trying to win a war," Selene said softly. "I'm just trying to find where I belong."

"I think you found it about five minutes ago," Megan replied, gesturing to Jamie, who was currently telling everyone that her "best friend the Queen" was a water-bender.

As the sun began to set, casting long, golden shadows over the park, Selene felt a sense of peace that no crown could ever provide. She might not be ready to say the words "I love you" to Leo just yet, but as she watched the pack thrive, she realized she was already living the answer.
