Chapter 5 - The Trail Of The Forest

The forest fell silent after the Keeper's warning.

Kazan could feel the fire inside him reacting to the strange figure before them. It flickered like a restless flame, as if the Keeper's presence was stirring something deep within him.

"What do you mean there is a price?" Kazan asked, his voice tense.

The Keeper slowly stepped forward. His bone mask reflected the pale light filtering through the trees.

"Power always demands something in return," the Keeper replied in a low, rasping voice. "Those who seek strength must first prove they are worthy of carrying it."

Riki narrowed his eyes. "And how do we prove that?"

The Keeper lifted a thin hand and pointed toward the dark forest surrounding them.

"The forest will decide."

At that moment, the ground beneath their feet began to tremble.

Kazan instinctively grabbed the hilt of his sword. "What's happening?"

Haku did not look surprised. Instead, his expression became serious.

"A trial," Haku said quietly. "The forest is testing you."

The trembling grew stronger. The trees around them creaked as something massive moved in the shadows. A deep growl echoed through the forest.

Then it appeared.

From between the ancient trees stepped a massive creature made of twisted roots and bark. Its body was shaped like a wolf, but its eyes glowed with a bright green light that burned in the darkness.

The Forest Guardian.

Kazan felt a chill run down his spine.

"That thing is our test?" he asked.

The Keeper's voice drifted through the air.

"Defeat the guardian, and the forest will allow you to pass."

The guardian suddenly lunged forward with terrifying speed.

"Move!" Riki shouted.

The twins leapt apart just as the creature's claws slammed into the ground, shattering the earth where they had been standing.

Kazan quickly drew his sword. Flames burst along the blade as he swung it toward the beast.

"Flame Strike!"

The burning slash struck the guardian's side, sending sparks into the air. But the creature barely flinched.

"It's tougher than it looks!" Kazan shouted.

The guardian roared and charged again.

Riki stepped forward this time. His movements were calm and precise as he slashed at the creature's legs, forcing it to stumble.

"Attack now, Kazan!"

Kazan nodded and rushed forward. The fire in his blade burned brighter as he swung with all his strength.

But suddenly, the flames surged wildly.

The fire spiraled out of control, bursting outward in a wave of heat.

"Kazan!" Riki shouted.

Kazan gritted his teeth, struggling to control the power raging through his body.

"It's happening again…" he muttered.

Haku's voice cut through the chaos.

"Control your fire!" he shouted. "Power without control will destroy you!"

Kazan closed his eyes for a brief moment, focusing on the heat inside him. Slowly, the flames steadied.

When he opened his eyes again, they burned with determination.

"Let's finish this, Riki!"

Riki nodded.

The twins rushed the guardian together.

Riki distracted the creature with a quick strike, forcing it to turn its attention toward him.

That was Kazan's chance.

He leapt into the air, his sword blazing with controlled fire.

"Twin Flame Slash!"

His blade crashed down onto the guardian's head in a burst of blazing light.

For a moment, the entire forest glowed with fire.

Then the guardian let out a final roar before collapsing into a pile of burning roots.

Silence returned to the forest.

Kazan landed on the ground, breathing heavily.

"We… did it," he said.

Riki wiped sweat from his forehead and nodded.

The Keeper stepped forward from the shadows once more.

"You have passed the forest's trial," he said.

Kazan looked up at him. "So we can continue north now?"

The Keeper slowly turned toward the distant mountains hidden beyond the trees.

"Yes," he said quietly. "But the path you walk leads to far greater dangers."

Haku stepped beside the twins.

"What dangers?" Riki asked.

The Keeper's hollow gaze returned to Kazan.

"The fire you carry is only the beginning," he said.

A cold wind swept through the forest.

"Beyond these woods lies a darkness that even the ancient spirits fear."

Suddenly, far away in the mountains, a deep roar echoed across the land.

The ground trembled beneath their feet.

Kazan felt the fire inside him react violently, surging like a storm.

"What… was that?" he asked.

Haku's expression darkened as he stared toward the mountains.

"It has begun," he whispered.

At that moment, a massive shadow moved across the clouds above the mountains—far larger than anything they had seen before.

Riki gripped his sword tightly.

"Kazan… whatever that is… it's coming this way."
