Chapter 21 - Kindom Of Akrains

The road to Arkanis was filled with silence.

Kazan, Riki, and Zephrael walked across the wide open field as the rising smoke in the distance grew darker and thicker. The peaceful sunrise that had appeared earlier was slowly being swallowed by black clouds drifting above the kingdom.

The wind carried the faint smell of burning wood and ash.

Something terrible had happened.

Riki adjusted his sword and looked ahead with concern.

"This doesn't look like a normal attack," he said quietly. "That smoke is too much."

Kazan nodded, his eyes focused on the distant kingdom walls.

"I can feel it," Kazan said. "A dark energy… spreading across the land."

Zephrael walked calmly beside them, but their face was serious.

"The shadows are moving faster than expected," Zephrael said. "If Arkanis falls, the surrounding regions will follow. This kingdom is important to the balance of this land."

As they continued walking, the massive stone walls of the Kingdom of Arkanis slowly came into view.

The once mighty gates were broken.

One of the towers had collapsed.

Black smoke poured from inside the city.

And the sound of screams echoed faintly through the air.

Riki froze.

"People are still inside."

Without waiting, Kazan ran forward.

"We move now!"

They rushed toward the broken gate and entered the kingdom.

Inside, chaos filled the streets.

Houses were burning.

Soldiers were fighting desperately.

Villagers ran in fear, carrying children and supplies, trying to escape the destruction.

Dark shadow creatures moved through the streets, attacking anything they saw.

A soldier fell near Kazan, wounded and struggling to breathe.

Kazan knelt beside him.

"What happened here?"

The soldier coughed weakly.

"Shadows… they came from nowhere… a powerful commander is leading them… we cannot stop him…"

Before the soldier could say more, a loud explosion shook the ground.

BOOOOM!

A building collapsed in the distance.

Riki turned quickly.

"There!"

From the center of the city, a massive shadow figure stood on top of a destroyed structure.

Unlike the smaller shadows, this one had a solid form.

Dark armor covered its body.

Its eyes glowed deep red.

And in its hand was a massive black blade.

Zephrael's expression hardened.

"Shadow Commander."

The creature raised its blade and slammed it into the ground.

A wave of dark energy spread through the street, knocking soldiers away like leaves in the wind.

Villagers screamed and ran.

Kazan stood up slowly, flames beginning to form around his hands.

"So that's the leader."

The Shadow Commander turned its glowing eyes toward them.

It had sensed their presence.

Riki stepped forward beside Kazan.

"Looks like we found our target."

Zephrael lifted their staff.

"Be careful. This one is much stronger than the others."

The Shadow Commander jumped down from the building and landed heavily on the street.

The ground cracked beneath its feet.

It spoke in a deep, distorted voice.

"Flame… bearer… you have arrived."

Kazan's eyes narrowed.

"You know me?"

The Shadow Commander raised its blade.

"You are the one who destroyed the Titan… the one who threatens the rise of darkness."

Flames grew stronger around Kazan's body.

"Then come and stop me."

The Shadow Commander roared and charged forward.

The battle began instantly.

Kazan rushed forward and punched the ground, releasing a wave of fire that shot toward the enemy.

The flames struck the Shadow Commander and exploded.

BOOOOM!

Smoke filled the air.

But when it cleared, the Shadow Commander was still standing.

It swung its massive blade.

Kazan jumped back just in time as the blade smashed into the ground, creating a deep crater.

Riki moved quickly and slashed at the commander's side.

CLANG!

His sword struck the dark armor but barely cut through it.

"It's tough!" Riki shouted.

The Shadow Commander swung its arm and knocked Riki back.

Zephrael stepped forward and raised their staff.

A blast of wind and energy shot forward, pushing the Shadow Commander back.

Kazan used the opening.

Flames exploded around him as he dashed forward.

He jumped into the air and slammed both fists into the commander's chest.

BOOOOM!

Fire spread across the armor, cracking it.

The Shadow Commander roared in pain.

It swung wildly, releasing waves of dark energy.

Zephrael blocked the attack with a barrier.

"Kazan! Now!"

Kazan gathered all his fire power.

The flames around him burned brighter than ever before.

"I will end this!"

He rushed forward and delivered a powerful flaming strike directly into the commander's chest.

BOOOOOOM!

The armor shattered.

Fire consumed the shadow body.

The Shadow Commander screamed as its body broke apart and dissolved into black smoke.

The remaining shadows scattered and disappeared.

Silence slowly returned to the kingdom.

The soldiers and villagers looked in shock.

"It… it's over," one soldier whispered.

Kazan breathed heavily and lowered his fists.

Riki smiled.

"That was a tough one."

Zephrael walked forward slowly.

"The kingdom is safe… for now."

But Zephrael's expression suddenly changed.

They looked toward the distant sky.

Kazan noticed.

"What's wrong?"

Zephrael remained silent for a moment.

Then they spoke quietly.

"I must leave."

Riki blinked.

"Leave? Now?"

Zephrael nodded slowly.

"There is something I must do… something important."

Kazan stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Zephrael looked at them calmly.

"My mother is sick."

Both Kazan and Riki were surprised.

"Your mother?" Riki asked.

"Yes," Zephrael said softly. "She lives in a distant village far from here. I received word earlier through the wind spirits. Her condition is getting worse. I must go and watch over her."

Kazan's expression softened.

"You should go."

Riki nodded.

"Family comes first."

Zephrael smiled slightly.

"You both have grown strong. I believe you can continue this journey without me for now."

Kazan looked serious.

"Will we see you again?"

Zephrael nodded.

"When the time comes… when darkness becomes too strong… I will return."

The wind began to gather around Zephrael.

"I trust you, Flameborne."

They turned and began to rise into the sky.

"Protect this world."

With that, Zephrael flew away, disappearing into the clouds.

Kazan watched silently.

Riki placed his hands behind his head.

"Well… looks like it's just the two of us again."

Kazan nodded.

"Yes."

Suddenly, a soldier ran toward them.

"Warriors! The King of Arkanis wants to see you immediately!"

Riki looked at Kazan.

"Looks like our next problem is already waiting."

Kazan looked toward the royal castle in the distance.

"Let's go."

But far away, deep within the mountains, a pair of glowing red eyes opened in the darkness.

A deep voice echoed.

"The Flameborne has entered Arkanis…"

The shadows began to move again.
