Chapter 26 - The Mark That Changed

Late morning in the Zhang mansion felt deceptively calm.

Sunlight poured through the tall windows. Servants moved quietly about their duties, restoring order as if the previous night had been nothing more than a disturbance quickly forgotten.

But for those who had been in the hidden passage, the calm meant nothing.

The mansion no longer felt safe.

Zhou Yiran stood on the balcony outside her room, resting her hands lightly against the railing. From here she could see the long driveway leading toward the iron gates and the gardens stretching beyond.

Everything looked peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Her mind replayed the events of the night again and again.

The intruder.

The gunfire.

Secretary Xu collapsing slightly as the bullet grazed his side.

Her fingers tightened against the railing.

She had reacted quickly in the moment, but the image of him pressing his hand against the blood soaking through his shirt refused to fade.

"Secretary Xu…" she murmured softly under her breath.

She exhaled slowly, trying to push the thought away.

This wasn't the first time violence had found her.

But the memories it stirred were… dangerous.

Her mind slipped briefly to another night.

Another corridor.

Another gunshot.

The feeling of her body collapsing as the world went dark.

And at the end of that memory...

A figure standing in the shadows.

Zhang Weiyu.

Zhou Yiran's eyes opened again.

"No," she whispered to herself.

That had been her previous life.

This life was different.

It had to be.

Still… the suspicion lingered.

What if he had known more than he showed?

What if last night hadn't been an accident?

What if it had been part of a plan?

The thought made her stomach tighten.

She straightened and turned away from the balcony.

She needed answers.

Across the mansion, inside Zhang Weiyu's study, the atmosphere was far less peaceful.

Secretary Xu stood beside the desk with a tablet in his hand.

A fresh bandage wrapped tightly around his side beneath his jacket, though he stood as straight as ever.

Zhang Weiyu leaned back slightly in his chair, watching him.

"Report."

Secretary Xu tapped the screen once before speaking.

"We rechecked the hidden passage."

"And?"

"The intruder knew exactly where to move."

Zhang Weiyu's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Elaborate."

Secretary Xu turned the tablet toward him.

A map of the underground passageways appeared.

"Every security blind spot," he said calmly. "Every corner where cameras couldn't see."

Zhang Weiyu studied the map silently.

"That's not something an outsider would know."

"No," Xu Shen agreed.

"Inside help?"

"It's possible."

Zhang Weiyu's gaze darkened slightly.

Or worse.

Someone who had been inside the mansion for a long time.

Before he could respond, the study door opened quietly.

Both men looked up.

Zhou Yiran stepped inside.

Her posture was calm, composed, but her eyes were sharp.

She noticed the bandage immediately.

"Secretary Xu," she said.

Xu Shen nodded politely.

"Miss Zhou."

Her gaze lingered on the bandage.

"You should be resting."

Xu Shen gave a faint smile.

"It's nothing serious."

"It didn't look that way last night."

His expression didn't change.

"Appearances can be misleading."

Zhang Weiyu watched the exchange without speaking.

Then his voice cut calmly into the room.

"Miss Zhou."

She turned toward him.

"Yes?"

"You've been avoiding me."

The statement hung in the air.

Zhou Yiran didn't look surprised.

"Have I?"

"You didn't look at me once this morning."

She tilted her head slightly.

"I didn't realize I was being observed."

Secretary Xu quietly stepped back.

This conversation wasn't meant for him.

Zhang Weiyu leaned forward slightly, his gaze steady.

"You don't trust me."

Zhou Yiran met his eyes.

"I trust what I see."

"And what did you see last night?"

She paused.

Gunfire.

Shadows.

Blood.

And a man who always seemed to know more than he said.

"I saw someone who knew this house very well."

Zhang Weiyu's gaze sharpened.

"And?"

"And I saw how easily they escaped."

Silence settled between them.

Then...

A sharp knock broke the tension.

"Enter," Zhang Weiyu said.

A guard stepped inside quickly.

"President Zhang."

"What is it?"

The guard hesitated.

"We found something in the passage."

Xu Shen straightened slightly.

"The three-line mark?"

The guard shook his head.

"No, sir."

He handed over a photograph.

Zhang Weiyu took it.

His expression changed slightly.

Xu Shen noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Zhang Weiyu turned the photograph toward them.

Zhou Yiran stepped closer.

Carved into the stone wall was a deep symbol.

A single letter.

Z

But beneath it...

Another carving.

Not her name.

Not any name she expected.

Two words.

COMING BACK

Zhou Yiran felt a chill run down her spine.

Xu Shen frowned.

"That wasn't there before."

"No," Zhang Weiyu said quietly.

The guard swallowed.

"There's something else, sir."

"What?"

"Below the message."

Xu Shen looked closer at the photo.

His expression changed.

Three thin lines.

Carved carefully beneath the words.

Zhou Yiran stared at the symbol.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"They're not done with us."

Zhang Weiyu's eyes darkened.

"No."

He placed the photograph on the desk.

"This was never about last night."

Silence filled the room.

Because if the intruder had returned once…

They could return again.

And this time...

They had left a promise.

Coming back.

Silence settled heavily inside the study.

The photograph lay on Zhang Weiyu's desk like a threat made of ink and stone.

The carved Z.

The words beneath it.

COMING BACK.

And the three thin lines cut into the stone below.

Zhou Yiran couldn't look away.

Her mind kept replaying the image.

Not a warning.

Not a random act of vandalism.

A message.

Someone had entered the mansion's hidden passages, left a mark, and walked out again without being caught.

Xu Shen broke the silence first.

"They were inside the passage again this morning."

Zhang Weiyu's gaze remained fixed on the photograph.

"Yes."

Xu Shen frowned.

"That means they never really left the area."

Zhou Yiran crossed her arms slowly.

"Or they came back."

Both men looked at her.

Her voice remained calm.

"You said the passage was checked overnight."

Xu Shen nodded.

"It was."

"And the mark wasn't there then?"

"No."

She tapped the edge of the desk lightly.

"Then whoever carved that message returned after sunrise."

The room grew quieter.

Zhang Weiyu leaned back slightly in his chair.

"Which means they're confident."

Xu Shen's expression hardened.

"Confident enough to enter the mansion grounds twice."

Zhou Yiran added quietly,

"Or confident enough to know they won't be caught."

Xu Shen turned toward her.

"You think they still have someone inside."

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead she looked toward the window.

Servants moved through the garden outside.

Security guards patrolled the gates.

Everything looked perfectly normal.

Too normal.

"If someone helped them," she said slowly, "they wouldn't need to rush."

Xu Shen nodded.

"That would explain the blind spots."

Zhang Weiyu finally picked up the photograph again.

His eyes moved carefully across the carving.

"COMING BACK."

A promise.

Or a threat.

He set the photograph down again.

"Seal the underground passage."

Xu Shen looked up.

"Completely?"

"For now."

Xu Shen nodded.

"I'll arrange it."

Zhou Yiran raised an eyebrow slightly.

"You're closing it?"

Zhang Weiyu met her gaze.

"Until we know who's using it."

She didn't argue.

But her thoughts were already moving ahead.

Closing the passage wouldn't stop someone who already knew the mansion's secrets.

Xu Shen left the study to carry out the order.

The door closed behind him.

Now only Zhou Yiran and Zhang Weiyu remained.

The tension returned instantly.

Zhang Weiyu stood slowly.

"You think I'm hiding something."

It wasn't a question.

Zhou Yiran met his eyes calmly.

"I think someone is."

Zhang Weiyu studied her expression."And you suspect me."

She tilted her head slightly.

"Should I not question the owner of the house?"

Zhang Weiyu's gaze sharpened, but he didn't look angry.

"Last night I was in that passage with you."

"Yes."

"And Xu Shen."

"Yes."

"So unless I planned to shoot my own secretary "

"I didn't say you planned it."

The interruption was calm but precise.

Silence stretched between them.

Zhou Yiran walked slowly toward the window.

Outside, the garden looked peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Her voice softened slightly.

"But you do know this house better than anyone."

Zhang Weiyu didn't deny it.

"Yes."

"You know every corridor."

"Yes."

"Every hidden passage."

Another pause.

"Yes."

She turned back toward him.

"Then tell me something."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"What?"

"How did someone else learn it?"

The question hung in the air.

Zhang Weiyu didn't answer immediately.

Not because he couldn't.

But because the answer was worse than silence.

Finally he said quietly,

"Either someone told them…"

His gaze moved briefly toward the closed door where Xu Shen had left.

"…or someone inside the mansion is working with them."

Zhou Yiran folded her arms.

"That's what worries me."

Zhang Weiyu watched her carefully.

"You think the intruder had help."

"I think," she said slowly, "they knew exactly where we would go."

He didn't disagree.

Because that part was true.

Then the study door opened again.

Xu Shen returned.

His expression was slightly darker than before.

"Sir."

Zhang Weiyu turned.

"What is it?"

Xu Shen placed another photograph on the desk.

"We found something else."

Zhou Yiran stepped closer.

The photograph showed another section of the stone wall.

Not the Z.

Not the message.

This time...

It wasn't a carving at all.

It was a small metal object lodged into the stone.

Xu Shen tapped the edge of the photograph.

"This was embedded in the wall."

Zhang Weiyu leaned forward slightly.

"What is it?"

Xu Shen slid a small evidence bag onto the desk.

Inside it...

A bullet.

The room went still.

Zhou Yiran frowned.

"That's from last night."

Xu Shen shook his head slowly.

"No."

He pointed to the markings along the metal.

"The caliber is different."

Zhang Weiyu's gaze sharpened.

"So it wasn't fired during the fight."

"No."

Xu Shen's voice lowered.

"This bullet was already there."

Zhou Yiran looked up sharply.

"Already?"

Xu Shen nodded.

"It was lodged deep in the stone. Long before the fight happened."

Silence fell across the room.

Zhang Weiyu picked up the evidence bag and examined the bullet carefully.

A faint scratch had been carved into the metal.

Three thin lines.

Zhou Yiran felt a cold chill spread across her back.

"The same mark," she said quietly.

Xu Shen nodded.

"Yes."

Zhang Weiyu placed the bullet back on the desk.

"Which means someone marked that wall before last night."

Zhou Yiran's mind raced.

"That passage hasn't been used in years."

Xu Shen glanced at her.

"Exactly."

Zhang Weiyu leaned back slowly in his chair.

"So either someone has been using it without us knowing…"

His voice trailed off.

Zhou Yiran finished the thought.

"…or someone has been waiting there."

Xu Shen frowned slightly.

"Waiting?"

She looked at the photograph again.

At the bullet.

At the three lines scratched into the metal.

"Yes," she said quietly.

"Waiting for us to arrive."

The realization settled heavily in the room.

Because that meant one terrifying possibility.

The intruder hadn't just found the passage.

They had known exactly when Zhou Yiran would be there.

Xu Shen broke the silence.

"There's something else."

Both of them looked at him.

"We found footprints deeper in the tunnel."

Zhang Weiyu's eyes narrowed.

"How many?"

Xu Shen hesitated.

"More than one."

Zhou Yiran felt the air in the room grow colder.

"How many?" she asked again.

Xu Shen answered quietly.

"At least three."

Silence returned.

Because last night...

They had only seen one intruder.

Which meant the most dangerous realization of all:_

Someone else had been in the tunnel with them…

…and they never noticed.

Silence settled heavily in the study.

Three sets of footprints.

The words lingered in the air like a slow-spreading crack in glass.

Zhang Weiyu was the first to move.

He stood slowly, walking toward the window behind his desk. His hands slipped casually into his pockets, but the tension in his shoulders betrayed the calm posture.

"Three people," he said quietly.

Xu Shen nodded.

"At least."

Zhou Yiran frowned.

"But we only saw one."

Xu Shen glanced at her.

"Yes."

"Which means the others stayed hidden," she concluded.

Zhang Weiyu turned slightly.

"Or they weren't there for us."

The statement made Zhou Yiran's stomach tighten.

"What do you mean?"

Xu Shen answered this time.

"The passage connects to several sections under the mansion."

He tapped the map still open on the tablet.

"Storage chambers. Old service tunnels. A collapsed wine cellar."

Zhou Yiran stepped closer.

"So they could move through the entire estate."

"Without being seen," Xu Shen said.

Zhang Weiyu's eyes darkened.

"And without using the main corridors."

Zhou Yiran crossed her arms slowly.

"That still doesn't explain why only one attacked us."

Xu Shen exhaled quietly.

"Maybe only one was supposed to."

Zhang Weiyu looked at him.

"You think the others were observing."

Xu Shen met his gaze.

"It would explain the message."

Zhou Yiran shook her head slightly.

"No."

Both men looked at her.

"That doesn't feel right."

Zhang Weiyu tilted his head slightly.

"Explain."

She pointed toward the photograph again.

"The bullet."

Xu Shen followed her gaze.

"What about it?"

"If they were just watching…"

Her voice dropped slightly.

"…why leave a mark at all?"

Silence returned.

Because she was right.

Observers didn't usually leave signatures.

Zhang Weiyu walked back toward the desk slowly.

"Then it wasn't observation."

Xu Shen frowned.

"What was it?"

Zhang Weiyu looked at Zhou Yiran.

"A test."

The word hung in the air.

Zhou Yiran felt her pulse quicken slightly.

"A test for what?"

"For you," he said calmly.

The answer came too easily.

Xu Shen looked between them.

"You think Miss Zhou was the target."

Zhang Weiyu didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Zhou Yiran's expression remained neutral.

But inside, her thoughts were racing.

A test.

That word again.

The intruder had watched her.

Moved around her.

Fired at Xu Shen.

But never aimed directly at her.

Her voice came quieter now.

"They weren't trying to kill me."

Xu Shen nodded slowly.

"I noticed that too."

Zhang Weiyu studied her carefully.

"They were measuring something."

Zhou Yiran's eyes flickered briefly.

Measuring.

Her instincts.

Her reactions.

Her survival.

A faint chill crept down her spine.

Because she had seen this kind of strategy before.

Not here.

Not in this life.

But in the one she remembered too well.

She forced herself to stay calm.

"Then whoever they are," she said slowly, "they already know something about me."

Xu Shen frowned.

"That would require information from inside the mansion."

Zhang Weiyu's gaze darkened slightly.

"Which brings us back to the same problem."

The spy.

Someone inside.

Someone watching.

The quiet tick of the clock on the wall filled the room.

Finally Xu Shen spoke again.

"There's something else."

Zhang Weiyu glanced at him.

"What?"

Xu Shen hesitated for a moment.

"The footprints didn't only go deeper into the tunnel."

Zhou Yiran's eyes narrowed.

"What do you mean?"

Xu Shen turned the tablet around again.

A map of the underground passage appeared.

He pointed toward a section closer to the mansion.

"Two sets of prints left."

"And the third?" Zhang Weiyu asked.

Xu Shen tapped another part of the map.

"It went this way."

Zhou Yiran leaned closer.

Her breath slowed.

Because she recognized where the path led.

The passage curved upward.

Toward the mansion itself.

Toward the main structure.

Toward...

"The west wing," she whispered.

Xu Shen nodded.

"Yes."

The room went quiet again.

Zhang Weiyu straightened slowly.

"The west wing has been closed for years."

Xu Shen didn't disagree.

"Which is why no one would notice movement there."

Zhou Yiran felt the weight of the realization settle over her.

Last night…

While they were chasing one intruder underground…

Someone else might have been walking inside the mansion above them.

Watching.

Searching.

Waiting.

Zhang Weiyu spoke calmly.

"We check the west wing."

Xu Shen nodded immediately.

"I'll send security."

"No."

Both Zhou Yiran and Xu Shen looked at him.

Zhang Weiyu's voice was firm now.

"We go ourselves."

Zhou Yiran's heart skipped slightly.

Because the last time they had followed someone into the west wing…

Gunfire had followed.

Xu Shen noticed her hesitation.

"You don't have to come."

Zhou Yiran shook her head immediately.

"No."

Zhang Weiyu studied her expression.

"You're certain?"

Her answer came without pause.

"If they came here for me…"

Her voice lowered slightly.

"…then I should see what they were looking for."

For a moment, none of them spoke.

Then Zhang Weiyu nodded once.

"Fine."

He turned toward the door.

"We move now."

The three of them stepped out of the study together.

The mansion corridors looked exactly the same as they always had.

Quiet.

Orderly.

Controlled.

But this time...

Zhou Yiran couldn't shake the feeling that someone had already walked these halls ahead of them.

And somewhere inside the silent west wing…

Something had been waiting.
