Chapter 37 - Distance

The night had quieted.

The lights still glowed behind her, laughter fading into the background but Zhou Yiran didn't look back.

Not once.

Her steps were steady even when her ankle protested slightly with each step.

She didn't slow down.

Behind her.. "Miss Zhou."

Xu Shen's voice followed.

His voice was Calm and Respectful.

Zhou yi ran Ignored his voice.

He quickened his pace slightly.

"Miss Zhou, the car is ready."

"I'll walk." Her tone was light but final.

Xu Shen paused for a second then continued walking beside her. "It's late."

"I noticed."

"Your ankle ?"

"I said I'm fine."

That stopped him for a moment.

But only a moment.

"…Please get in the car."

"I'm not ordering you. It's my request. Please get in car otherwise I can't explain m.r Zhang "

Zhou Yiran's steps slowed.

Then she stopped.

Silence settled briefly between them.

Her thoughts didn't match her calm expression.

Walking away like this… doesn't change anything.(.....)

And proving a point… to who?(.....)

A quiet breath."…Fine."

She turned not toward Xu Shen but toward the car.

Her gaze remained forward.

She was Carefully avoiding.

The direction she knew he was standing.

She walked past.

Opened the door.

Got in car without looking at Zhang Weiyu.

She didn't look not even once.

The door shut Soft but final.

Inside the Car Silence.

Zhou Yiran leaned back slightly, her gaze shifting toward the window.

The city lights blurred past.

Xu Shen took the driver's seat.

Started the engine.

For a moment he just sat there.

He didn't drive.

His eyes flicked to the rearview mirror.

She was calm.

"…Miss Zhou, are you comfortable?"

"I'm fine."

Same words.

Different meaning.

The car began to move.

A few minutes passed.

Nothing but the sound of the road.

Xu Shen finally spoke again.

"…About tonight..."

"You don't need to explain."

Immediate.

Clean.

He stopped but the thought didn't.

Another stretch of silence before Zhou Yiran spoke. Still looking outside.

"Do you know her?"

Xu Shen's grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly.

"…I'm not sure."

A pause.

"Not sure…" Zhou Yiran repeated softly.

Then—

"…or not saying?"

Xu Shen exhaled quietly.

"If I knew something important, I would report it."

"To him."

The words landed lightly but not without weight.

Xu Shen didn't respond because there was nothing to deny.

The car continued forward.

Zhou Yiran's reflection faintly appeared in the window.

Calm face.

Clear eyes.

She was thinking.

He didn't deny her.(...)

He didn't explain her.(....)

And Xu Shen… reacted.(....)

Her fingers curled slightly against her sleeve.

She appeared too suddenly and she was comfortable like she belongs here.(....)

A quiet conclusion formed.

…This isn't coincidence.(.....)

"…Sir didn't mean to..." Xu Shen started carefully.

"I didn't ask what he meant."

The interruption was soft.

But final.

Xu Shen fell silent again.

Outside the city moved.

Lights passing.

People unaware.

Everything normal.

Inside nothing felt normal anymore.

Zhou Yiran closed her eyes briefly.

Not out of exhaustion.

But to steady the noise in her thoughts.

Then slowly opened them again.

Her gaze sharpened.

Just slightly.

Next time…(...)

She leaned her head lightly against the seat.

I won't just stand there.(...)

The car drove on into the night.

Elsewhere ____

The car door shut. A quiet, contained sound

but it sealed the atmosphere inside.

Zhang Weiyu didn't look at her not immediately.

"Drive."

The car moved Smooth and Controlled just like him.

Lina leaned back comfortably, one arm resting against the door, eyes drifting toward him with quiet interest.

"You let her leave."

No response.

Her gaze lingered.

"…That didn't look like control."

Zhang Weiyu finally turned his head slightly.

"Then you weren't paying attention."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"…Still like this."

Silence returned.

But this time thinner and sharper.

A few seconds passed before he spoke again.

His expression was Cold. He asked directly

"Why are you here?"

Lina tilted her head.

"You didn't miss me?"

"Answer the question."

No hesitation this time.

No patience either.

She watched him for a moment longer As if measuring something.

Then exhaled softly.

"You've become boring."

"You've become unnecessary."

That landed but didn't shake her.

Instead Her smile deepened just slightly.

"…Good. That means you're still the same."

Zhang Weiyu's gaze hardened.

"You don't show up without reason."

"And you don't like surprises."

"Stop wasting time."

A pausenthen her tone shifted.

"Fine."

She looked out the window briefly then back at him.

"Take it as a warning."

Silence.

Zhang Weiyu didn't blink.

"Be clear."

Lina's eyes met his.

"You're being watched."

For a fraction of a second nothing moved.

But his mind did.

Watched…(....)

She knows about intruder.(...)

Things that were never spoken outside.(....)

That information never left the mansion.(....)

His gaze darkened slightly.

So how does she know?(....)

His voice dropped.

"…You're watching my movements."

Lina didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

His eyes narrowed.

"…You're watching my house."

A pause this time She smiled.

She was not trying to denying it.

Not confirming it either.

Zhang Weiyu leaned back slightly, gaze never leaving her.

"…Or should I ask? "

A brief pause. Sharper now.

"Who are you watching for?"

She didn't answer.

The words settled between them.

"I'm being watched? But by whom?"

"The same people who already got close."

His gaze sharpened instantly.

She definitely knows (.....)

Then he asked.

"…Inside or outside?"

She smiled faintly.

"Does it matter?"

It did and they both knew it.

The car moved through a quiet stretch of road.Streetlights passing one by one.

Zhang Weiyu's voice lowered.

Dangerously calm.

"Say what you mean."

Lina didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she studied him again.Slowly and

Carefully.

"If I say too much…" she said at last, "you won't believe me."

A pause."And if I say nothing…"

Her smile returned.

"…you'll start doubting everyone."

A calculated move.

Zhang Weiyu didn't react outwardly.

But his silence shifted.

Then.."She's interesting," Lina added casually.

That was the first time she brought her into it.

Zhang Weiyu's eyes turned colder.

"Stay away from her."

Lina raised a brow.

"…That sounds serious."

"It is."

Another pause This one quieter but deeper.

Lina leaned back again, watching him differently now.

"…You didn't stop her."

"I didn't need to."

"Or you couldn't."

His gaze flicked toward her.

She smiled.

"…That's new."

The car slowed.

A hotel entrance came into view.

Lights brighter.

People moving.

Normal.

The car came to a stop.

Lina didn't open the door immediately.

Instead, she looked at him one last time.

"Next time…"

A small pause.

"…don't let her walk away."

The words carried more than one meaning.

They both knew it.

She opened the door and Stepped out.

Then paused.

Turned slightly.

"Be careful… Weiyu."

Her tone was same.

Same familiarity.

Then she left.

The door closed.

Silence filled the car again.

But not the same silence.

Zhang Weiyu didn't move.

He Didn't speak for minutes.

Streetlights reflected faintly across his face.

Shadows shifting.

Her words replayed.

You're being watched.

Don't trust everyone.

Don't let her walk away.

And then..Another image.

Zhou Yiran Walking away Without stopping and waiting.

His fingers stilled slightly against the seat.

For the first time.Something hadn't gone according to his control.

And he noticed it.

The car slowed. Gravel shifted softly beneath the tires as the gates of Zhang Mansion opened. Everywhere silent. Every moments was Controlled as always.

Zhou Yiran didn't move immediately.

Her gaze remained fixed outside the window.

The familiar structure stood tall, untouched, unchanged and yet it didn't feel the same.

"…Miss Zhou."

Xu Shen's voice broke the quiet.

His voice was Soft and Careful.

She blinked once, as if returning from somewhere far away.

Then opened the door.

The night air was cooler and sharper here.

She stepped out Slowly.

Her ankle protested the moment her weight shifted. A faint flicker crossed her expression

Gone just as quickly.

Xu Shen stepped forward instinctively.

"Miss Zhou"

"You should go back."

She didn't look at him.

He paused. "…Sir might return late."

She gave small nod.

"I know."

Silence stretched between them.

Xu Shen hesitated.

For once And he was Uncertain.

"…If you need anything..."

"I won't." Zhou yi ran said.

That made him stop completely.

She finally turned slightly Not fully just enough.

"I mean… I'll manage."

Her voice was not harsh and cold.

Just Distant.

Xu Shen lowered his gaze slightly.

"…Understood."

He didn't push further.

Didn't ask more Because something had shifted. And he could feel it.

Zhou Yiran turned away first.

And walked inside.

Inside the Mansion____

Everything was the same.

Lights warm.

Staff were working quietly.

Everything was perfect.

Her steps echoed softly against the polished floor.

Each step steady and Measured.

But her mind was not steady.

She was thinking about Intruder, Coin, and Symbol they left. Her mind reapeting everything happened.

Why suddenly her friend appear? (.....)

What friend? She is definitely not his friend.(....)

But what is her intentions?(.....)

Is she only for m.r Zhang? (.....)

Forget it I don't care. It's not my problem. all I have to focus for finding truth about my death.(.....)

The pieces didn't scatter anymore.

They were aligning.

This isn't random.

She slowed slightly.

It was never random.

Her fingers tightened faintly against her sleeve.

Someone planned this.(.....)

…But why me?(.....)

She didn't stop walking.

Didn't let the question settle.

Because she already knew this wasn't just about her.

It's him.

A pause.

And now… me. (...)

She reached her room.

Opened the door.

Closed it behind her.

The soft click echoed louder than it should have.

Inside Her Room Silence.

No sound of footsteps.

Just dark room. She turned on light.

Zhou Yiran stood still for a moment.

Then moved slowly.

She sat down at the edge of the bed.

The moment she did the pain in her ankle finally made itself known.

"…Tch."

She exhaled softly.

But didn't reach for the spray and didn't check it Because that wasn't what occupied her.

Her mind replayed something else entirely.

Lina saying "Weiyu."

Her fingers stilled.

That tone.

That familiarity was not ot forced.

Not distant. It was Natural.

Her gaze lowered slightly.

"Friend."

A faint pause.

Then a small, humorless breath escaped her.

"…Right."

Her lips pressed together.

And I'm supposed to believe that.

She leaned back slightly.

Her gaze drifted upward.

Unfocused.

He didn't deny it.

That part stayed clear.

He didn't explain either.

Another pause.

And he looked at her.

That moment replayed too clearly.

The shift in his balance.

The distraction.

…He lost focus. (.....)

Her fingers curled slightly against the fabric of her dress.

"…Interesting."

But this time the word felt different.

It was less amused and More Aware.

She closed her eyes briefly.

Then opened them again.

The softness disappeared.

Replaced by something sharper.

More deliberate.

"Enough."

The word was quiet but final.

She straightened slightly.

She stopped thinking emotionally.

She started to thinking logically.

Intruder enters Zhang Mansion.

And Leaves coin as Symbol.

Guard secretly contacts someone.

Goes to… my house.

Her gaze sharpened.

Then suddenly We got Dinner invitation.

It all happened too fast.

"And Lina appears…"

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Her fingers tapped lightly against her knee.

Once and twice.

it's not coincidence anymore.

Her mind moved faster now.

It's connected.(....)

A pause.

Everything is connected.(....)

Her breathing slowed.

Then a thought surfaced.

It was different and Sharper.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

…They're not targeting just him.(.....)

A beat.

They're targeting both of us.(.....)

That realization didn't shock her.

It settled Like something that had been waiting to be understood.

"…Then why?"

She stood up slowly.

Her ankle protested again but she ignored it.

She Walked toward the window.

The curtains shifted slightly as she moved them aside. Outside the mansion grounds stretched wide.

Everything was Quiet.

Outside was Safe or at least yhat's how it looked.

Her gaze lingered.

It looked safe before too.

A faint tension settled in her chest not fear.

It was Awareness.

If someone can enter once…(....)

A pause.

" They can enter again."

Her fingers rested lightly against the glass.

Cool.

Grounding.

"…So what are you planning?"

The question wasn't for anyone in the room.

But it wasn't empty either.

A Memory Flickers Something small.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

That guard…

Her mind reached and Searched for him.

Then Stopped.

I've seen him before.(....)

The realization came quietly but it stayed.

It was not clear and complete.

But enough.

"…Where…"

She tried to recall.

The face and his posture.

Something about him Wasn't new.

"…Not here."

Her brows furrowed slightly.

Then where?(....)

The question lingered unanswered.

But important.

Elsewhere – Zhang Weiyu Returns

The gates opened again. Another car entered.

Zhang Weiyu stepped out.

His movements were the same.

Controlled and Precise.

But his thoughts Weren't.

You're being watched.

Don't trust everyone.

A pause.

Don't let her walk away.

His gaze lowered slightly.

A memory surfaced.

Zhou Yiran walking and not stopping.

She left without saying.

His expression didn't change.

But something tightened just slightly.

He walked inside.

Upstairs Zhou Yiran stepped back from the window.

At the same time

Zhang Weiyu entered the hallway below.

Footsteps sound.

A door shifted slightly.

But neither of them noticed

Or maybe they chose not to.

Because neither stopped.

She exhaled slowly.

Then turned toward the bed.

Finally she reached for the spray.

Applied it without much thought.

Her movements were mechanical.

Because her mind was elsewhere.

She lay down slowly.

She was not fully relaxed.

Just thinking.

The ceiling blurred slightly as her focus drifted.

Guard,House and Lina all this words repeated.

Are this all Connected?

"…Let's see."

Her voice was quiet.

But determined.

If you're watching…(....)

A faint pause.

Then I'll start watching too.

Silence settled again.

Just as her eyes began to close.

A sound came from outside.

Her eyes opened instantly Stillness.

Another sound.

Closer.

Her body didn't move.

But her gaze sharpened.

She saw locked on the door.

Silence again.

Then a faint shift.

Right outside.

Zhou Yiran's voice was barely a whisper.

"…Not again."
