Chapter 38 - The Sound Outside

"…Not again."

The thought surfaced quietly in Zhou Yiran's mind, not even reaching her lips this time. It didn't need to. The weight of it was already familiar enough to settle into her chest without sound. The room had returned to silence. Not natural silence. Not the kind that came when a noise simply faded away.

This silence felt deliberate as if something had been there just moments ago close enough to hear, close enough to feel and then chose to disappear completely.

Zhou Yiran lay still on the bed, her eyes open in the darkness. She didn't move. Didn't shift. Even her breathing remained steady, controlled, almost unnaturally calm.

She listened. One second passed then five and then ten. No movement happened.

No footsteps. No faint rustle. No presence lingering outside the door.

Her lips parted slightly, her voice barely more than a breath in the dark. "…You stopped again." Silence answered her.

Her gaze didn't waver. "So it wasn't my imagination."

A pause.Then softer. "…I heard you."

There was no fear in her tone. No trembling. Only quiet certainty, like she was confirming something already known. Her eyes shifted faintly toward the door. "Same place… same timing."

Another pause. Her fingers pressed lightly into the bedsheet. "…Are you waiting for me to react?" Nothing responded. But she didn't expect it to.

Her gaze drifted slowly toward it.Closed.

Exactly as it should be. No shadow beneath. No movement. No sign that anything had been there at all but that didn't reassure her.

Her fingers tightened slightly against the bedsheet.

"Aren't you gonna answer?"

"Yes, why would you answer me"

Her eyes darkened, something sharp settling beneath the surface of her calm.

"So you came back." There was no fear in the thought. She didn't move right away.

That was new before, she would have reacted immediately. Sat up. Turned on the lights. Checked the door. Called someone.

But now She waited because she understood something she hadn't before. Whatever this was… it responded to urgency. And she wasn't going to give it that. Only when the silence stretched long enough to press against her senses did she finally move slowly.

"…Then don't go quiet now." Her voice was low, steady, threading through the darkness without force. "If you wanted my attention… you already have it."

Silence pressed back. Zhou Yiran's eyes remained fixed on the door, unblinking.

"…Or is this the part where you wait?"

A faint exhale left her. "For me to get scared… to hesitate…" Her fingers shifted slightly against the bedsheet. "…to make a mistake."

Another pause. Then quieter.."…You've done this before."

Her gaze sharpened just a fraction.."So what changes this time?" Nothing answered her but she didn't look disappointed only more certain. "…Right." A subtle shift in her posture. "Then I'll move first."

She pushed herself upright, the blanket sliding softly down her shoulders. The moment her feet touched the floor, a sharp ache shot through her ankle. She paused for a fraction of a second. Then ignored it completely. Pain was irrelevant.

Her weight shifted forward as she stood, steady despite the lingering discomfort. Her gaze flicked briefly toward the main light switch on the wall. She didn't touch it.

Instead, her hand moved to the small lamp beside her bed.

A soft click..Warm, dim light spread across the room just enough to reveal shapes, not enough to fully expose the space.

Intentional.

Her eyes swept across the room once.

Nothing out of place.

And yet that meant nothing. Zhou Yiran stepped forward. The floor gave a faint creak beneath her weight.

She paused instantly and listened Still nothing. She took Another step Slower this time.Zhou Yiran stepped forward. The floor gave a faint creak beneath her weight.

She paused instantly and listened. Still nothing. She took another step slower this time.

"…Who's outside?" Silence.

"…No patrol?" A faint exhale.

"Did everyone suddenly decide to take a break together?" Another step.

"…Xu Shen." She tilted her head slightly.

"You finally quit your job without telling anyone?"

Pause.."…Or fell asleep on duty?"

Her lips pressed faintly.."If that's the case, I might actually be more impressed than concerned."

Another step.."…Or should I assume this is deliberate?" Silence stretched.she let out a quiet breath. "…If you're trying to scare me, at least be creative."

A beat. "…This is getting repetitive."

The closer she got to the door, the heavier the air felt. Not colder. Not warmer. Just… thicker. Her senses sharpened. Every detail magnified the faint hum of electricity, the subtle shift of air, the quiet rhythm of her own heartbeat. Then she reached near the door.

Her hand lifted slowly, hovering just inches from the handle. And for the first time since she woke she hesitated.

If I open it…(...) Her fingers curled slightly in the air.

"I won't get a second chance." The thought settled with absolute clarity. She could walk away and lock the door and Pretend nothing had happened. Her hand remained suspended for a moment longer.

Then She made her decision. Her fingers closed around the handle.Cold metal met her skin. She didn't rush. She turned it slowly and

Carefully.

Elsewhere in the house, Zhang Weiyu stopped mid-step. The hallway outside his study was dim, lined with soft recessed lights that cast long, quiet shadows along the floor. Everything appeared normal at first glance.

But something was wrong. He felt it

a subtle shift in the atmosphere. A disturbance too precise to be accidental.

His gaze moved slightly toward the far end of the corridor. Then, quieter dangerously calm.

"…You got past my perimeter."

A pause. "…That means you're either very capable…"

His eyes darkened slightly. "…or very stupid."

Silence answered him. His lips barely moved.

"…Either way, you won't leave."

He step forward. "…Not tonight."

Another pause. "…If you're here for something.." His gaze sharpened, cutting through the dim corridor. "…you'll find out very quickly what it costs."

"…Run if you want." His tone didn't rise.

"…I'll still find you."

His steps slowed, then stopped completely.

Silence settled around him, heavier than before. For a brief moment, he simply stood there, listening without moving, his senses reaching outward..Then he moved.

A subtle shift of his shoulders as he adjusted his sleeves, smoothing the fabric with calm precision. No rush. No wasted motion.

His hand slipped inside his coat.

Metal gleamed faintly as he pulled out his gun. He checked it once. Then click.

Gun was ready to shoot. "…You came prepared right?"

No response from other side.

"Good" His grip steadied, expression unchanged, eyes cold and focused.

"…That saves me the trouble of holding back." He stepped forward slow and silent.

Each movement deliberate as his gaze swept the corridor, scanning every shadow, every blind spot.

"…Let's see how long you last."

Back in her room, the door opened Slowly.

Zhou Yiran didn't step out immediately. She stood at the threshold, her gaze scanning the corridor ahead. there was no one corridor was empty. The overhead lights flickered faintly, casting uneven shadows that stretched unnaturally along the walls.

Her eyes shifted left. There was nothing. A long stretch of hallway, quiet and undisturbed. Then She looked right. Something moved Quick and gone in an instant at the far corner. Her eyes narrowed slightly there. She didn't hesitate.

She stepped out of the room completely, leaving the door behind her open.

Retreat was no longer part of her plan.

Her footsteps were light as she moved down the corridor, each step controlled, nearly silent. Her senses stretched outward, searching for any trace of movement.

But there was nothing Only silence. And that made it worse.

"…That's it?" A faint frown touched her expression. "…You make a sound, then disappear?" She slowed slightly.

"…Not even trying to hide properly."

Another step. Her gaze sharpened.

"…Or are you waiting for me to come closer?"

A pause. "…How considerate."

Her voice dropped, quieter now. "…At least pretend you're a threat."

She took another step. "…Or what?"

A faint tilt of her head. "…You thought I'd stay in my room and panic?"

She let out a soft breath. "…Wrong person."

Her fingers brushed lightly against the wall as she walked. "…You're quiet."

A beat. "…But not careful enough."

Her eyes flicked toward the far end.

"I heard you." Pause.

"…So don't waste my time pretending you're not there." Her steps didn't stop.

"…Come out."

Elsewhere _____

Sir?" Xu Shen's voice came first as he rounded the corner, moving fast but controlled. He had been monitoring the east wing cameras when a subtle flicker caught his attention an anomaly too deliberate to ignore. Without a word, he'd taken the service stairs two at a time, avoiding the main hallways, and was now closing in on Zhang Weiyu's location.

Zhang Weiyu didn't turn. "Someone's inside." His tone was calm, unshaken. Xu Shen skidded to a stop a few feet behind him, lowering himself slightly, almost crouching. "I noticed the east wing cameras flickered," he said quickly. "I followed it.figured something was moving through the house. I'm here now."

Zhang Weiyu's eyes didn't move from the corridor ahead. "Good instinct."

Xu Shen exhaled softly, trying to steady his nerves. "But… I didn't see anyone. No shadows, no forced entry. I thought..."

"There wouldn't be." Zhang Weiyu's voice cut through, flat, final. Xu Shen swallowed, lowering his gaze slightly. "Right. Then… someone's careful. Too careful. Or… bold."

"Both," Zhang Weiyu said simply, adjusting the grip on his coat. "Confident enough to slip past my defenses without notice. That confidence will be their undoing."

Xu Shen nodded, stepping closer, scanning every corner. "Sir… you want me to follow your lead o...?"

"You stay close. Observe. Intervene only if necessary," Zhang Weiyu replied. His tone was firm, unyielding.

"Yes, sir," Xu Shen said, now fully alert, matching Zhang Weiyu's measured pace.

They moved down the corridor together, shadows stretching and shifting along the walls. Xu Shen broke the silence, whispering, "Sir… if this intruder is as careful as we think, we could be walking into a trap."

Zhang Weiyu's lips curved into the faintest smirk. "Then we walk carefully… but we walk."

"There wouldn't be."

Zhang Weiyu began walking again, his pace steady but purposeful. "They're already in."

Xu Shen followed immediately.

Zhou Yiran turned the corner. The lighting here was dimmer. Weaker. Shadows gathered more heavily, clinging to the edges where the light didn't quite reach.

She slowed, not out of fear.

This place feels different.

"…Why does it feel… heavier here?" she whispered to herself.

The air here is heavier.

"…Something's off. Definitely off."

Her gaze moved across the corridor, then stopped. A door slightly open, just enough to notice. Her steps halted.

"That door… never open," she muttered.

This room was unused.

"…Someone's been here." Her lips pressed into a thin line.

Her eyes sharpened, and her focus narrowed.

"…Why open it now?"

She moved forward again, slower now, more deliberate. Each step silent and careful.

"The darkness… it's not just absence of light," she murmured.

"…It's… something else. Something waiting."

The gap between the door and its frame seemed darker than it should be, like the darkness inside wasn't just absence of light but something deeper.

"…Okay…" she breathed quietly. "…let's see who's been messing around."

She lifted her hand to the door again, pausing.

"…You picked a bad night to sneak around."

Her fingers hovered over the handle.

"…I wonder… are you afraid of me, or just stupid?"

A slow exhale left her.

"…You really thought I'd just stay in my room?"

She straightened slightly, stepping closer.

"…Wrong choice. Very wrong choice."

Her hand tightened on the edge of the door.

"…Time to find out who's inside."

The door creaked softly as it opened further.

The room beyond remained dark.

There was no light. No movement in the room. She didn't step in immediately. She listened.

"…Really? Nothing?" Zhou Yiran muttered under her breath, her voice low and sharp. "Not even a cat, a mouse… a ghost? Come on, someone has to make a sound!"

Silence answered her.

"Okay, fine. Very funny. You're really good at hide-and-seek." Her lips curved into a tight smirk, though it didn't reach her eyes. "I'm not laughing. I mean… actually, maybe I am. Just a little."

Another pause. Her eyes swept the darkness again. "Where is everyone? You know, security, Xu Shen… or did you all just suddenly vanish? Gone for a smoke break or something?"

No response from room. She stepped slightly forward, the floor cold beneath her feet. "No? Nobody's coming to save you? You're on your own, huh? Brave. Or maybe stupid."

The faint hum of the house's electronics was all that answered her. Even that seemed too quiet.

"Seriously… this is too easy," she whispered, voice dripping with sarcasm. "I should feel scared, right? Right? Oh wait… I'm not scared."

Her gaze darted across the room, adjusting to the darkness. Covered furniture, unused corners, and undisturbed surfaces lay in silence. It should have been comforting, almost dull. And yet something was wrong.

"…Hmm," she murmured, stepping closer. "Too quiet. Too neat. Too… polite. Who taught you to hide like this? Because I'm not impressed. Honestly."

She paused mid-step, eyes narrowing as she took in the room. The air was colder here, pressing subtly against her senses without touching her. It wasn't physical it was heavier, oppressive in a way that didn't quite make sense.

"…All right, think. Breathe. There's no one. And yet," she muttered, shaking her head. "I can feel you. Whoever you are, I can feel you. Stop making me talk to myself it's awkward."

A faint noise barely audible echoed from somewhere deeper inside. Zhou Yiran froze. Her grip on the edge of the doorframe tightened.

"…Ah! There it is!" she whispered, crouching slightly. "Finally. I thought I was imagining it. No, you can't hide from me that easily."

Another step forward, silent and deliberate. Her gaze swept over the shadowy outlines again. "…You know, I could just leave. Go grab a cup of tea. Take a nap. Come back tomorrow. Or, you know, never. But I won't. Because I'm stubborn. And you, my invisible friend, are about to learn that stubbornness is dangerous."

She paused. Her ears twitched. The faint sound came again. Somewhere behind her.

"…Behind me? Really? You couldn't just stay in front? At least have the courtesy to face me." She rolled her eyes. "You're so rude."

Her free hand moved to the wall, fingertips grazing the surface, following the contours as she inched forward. "…If you're trying to scare me, congratulations. I'm slightly startled. But not screaming. Not yet."

She straightened again, taking a deeper step. "…And really, why is it always me? I don't get the memo. No one else gets this treatment. Me. Always me. So thoughtful of you."

Her lips pressed together. "…All right. Enough joking. Where are you? Seriously. Speak up, or this ends badly for someone."

Another faint movement. She flinched slightly but forced herself to remain calm. "…Ah-ha! Gotcha! Thought you were clever, didn't you?" No reply. Only the oppressive silence that seemed almost alive.

"…Fine. Very well. Let's play your game. You move. I move. Fair right? But don't think I'm letting you win. Not even close. Not in a million years."

Her eyes adjusted further, shapes emerging from the dark covered chairs, a side table, and drapes swaying lightly as if the air itself had been disturbed. "…Okay, maybe it's colder than I thought. Great. Just great. Freezing, silent, and invisible. This is turning out really well." She shook her head with a quiet laugh that didn't reach her eyes. "…Perfect conditions for someone to jump out. Thanks for that. Really."

The faint sound repeated, closer now. She froze, twisting slightly. "…Okay. There. Behind me again. That's… impressive. And annoying. And… rude. Did I mention rude?"

Her free hand moved slowly to the door she had left open, fingertips brushing the frame. "…All right, listen carefully. You're either coming out, or I'm coming in. And I can promise you my idea of polite confrontation is not what you want right now."

A subtle pause.

"…You're quiet. I appreciate that. But silence is not your friend, buddy." Her gaze darted to every shadow, tracking faint movements. "…Ah, there you are. Or maybe not. Stop moving just to tease me."

The faint sound came again, almost imperceptible. She flinched, then exhaled slowly. "…You're testing me. Fine. I accept. Let's test me."

She stepped forward deliberately, eyes narrowing. "…And seriously, why is no one else here? No guards. No Xu Shen. No alarms. Just me and… whatever you are."

A pause. She exhaled, shaking her head. "…I feel lonely already. Just thought I'd mention it. Maybe throw you off."

The air pressed heavier against her senses, and her grip tightened. "…Not scary. Not even close. You're making this too easy for me, you know that?"

Then, suddenly a hand shot out from the darkness, grabbing her wrist firm, unyielding.

Zhou Yiran reacted instantly, twisting sharply, her free hand moving to strike but the grip tightened impossibly. Her breath caught once. "…Really? That's it?" she hissed under her breath, teeth clenched. "…No introduction? No warning? Just grab?"

She glanced briefly at the shadowy figure holding her wrist. "…You have manners at least? No? Figures."

Her eyes darted around, searching, calculating. "…Okay. Fine. Plan B. I deal with rude people."

A soft smirk touched her lips even in the tension. "…I hope you like pain. Because I'm good at it. Just saying."

The darkness pressed in, cold and heavy, almost sentient, yet she refused to show fear. "…You're fast. I'll give you that. But not fast enough."

She twisted again, free hand ready to strike. "…Come on, introduce yourself properly! Or at least make this interesting. I'm bored already."

The grip on her wrist tightened slightly, and she froze. "…Oh, strong too. Fantastic combo. Fast and strong. Who taught you this? Dad? Gym? Or just naturally… rude?"

The faintest shift in the shadow hinted at a response but no words.

"…hello?!!," she muttered. "…Silent type. Of course. Strong, silent and Classic. I Love it."

Another pause. "…All right. I'm going to assume you didn't intend to be funny. But I'm funny enough for both of us, so consider it covered." Her eyes narrowed, reading the darkness. "…Where are you? Why are you here? Security? Gone? Xu Shen? On coffee break?"

A beat. She exhaled slowly. "…No answer? Figures. Too polite. Or maybe you just like torturing people."

She let out a faint laugh, tight but amused. "…Well, congratulations. You got me. Hands grabbed, wrist twisted, yet I'm still standing. Impressive."

Her gaze darted again. "…You move, I move. That's fair. But remember I never lose. Not in this kind of game."

Another step, careful, silent. "…And seriously, whoever sent you don't. I'm warning you. I don't negotiate with invisible idiots. Just saying."

Her free hand flexed slightly, ready to strike, yet her eyes stayed locked on the darkness ahead. "…Come on. Speak up.Do something. You're boring me. And I don't like being bored."

The shadow shifted ever so slightly, just enough to make her react. "…Ah! There it is. There's some initiative. About time. Small steps, but I see you. Keep going."

She felt the grip tighten again. "…All right, enough teasing. Let's see if we can make this interesting. For both our sakes."

Her eyes darted across the room, calculating, analyzing. "…And seriously… someone's going to regret not calling security or anyone. It's just me and you now. Lucky me, huh?"

A final breath left her, quiet, controlled, yet threaded with tension. "…You're strong. Silent. And annoying. But… predictable. And I don't like predictable."

Her hand flexed again, poised, ready. "…Let's finish this little introduction properly. No more games. Deal?"

Then a voice, low and close to her ear.

"Don't make a sound."

She froze Not because of the words.

Because of the voice was familiar.

Her eyes widened slightly in the dark.

…This voice(....) Before the thought could complete the door slammed open.

Light flooded the room. Footsteps followed fast, controlled.

Zhang Weiyu appeared in the doorway.

His presence cut through the tension instantly, sharp and commanding. His gaze locked onto the scene Zhou Yiran, her wrist held, the shadow behind her. Everything stopped.

And just for an instant Something unreadable flickered in his eyes.

The scene froze.
