Chapter 18 - Chapter Eighteen

Night had settled over the city, but the ballroom inside the civic hall remained bright with conversation, laughter, and quiet negotiations.

Crystal glasses clinked beneath the chandeliers. Council members moved between clusters of developers and investors, each conversation carrying the weight of billions.

At the center of the room stood two of the most powerful rival companies in the industry.

On one side: Lyon Global Holdings.

On the other: Williams Holdings.

And between them, the future of the Brooklyn redevelopment.

Emma stood beside Damian near the edge of the ballroom, watching the crowd carefully.

Across the room, Tony Williams spoke confidently with several council members.

He looked comfortable.

Too comfortable.

"He knows he has their attention," Emma murmured.

Damian followed her gaze.

"Yes."

Tony laughed at something one of the councilmen said, his body language relaxed, charismatic.

He was good at this.

Very good.

"Public influence," Emma said thoughtfully. "That's his strength."

Damian glanced at her.

"And yours?"

She looked back at him.

"Strategy."

Damian allowed himself a small smile.

"That's why you're here."

Before she could respond, a councilwoman approached them.

"Mr. Lyon, Miss Wilson. Good evening."

Damian greeted her politely.

"Councilwoman Ramirez."

She nodded warmly.

"We've been reviewing both proposals. I must say, the competition has been… impressive."

Emma spoke calmly.

"Our goal is to create a project the city can be proud of."

The councilwoman smiled approvingly.

"That's exactly what we hope to see."

After a few more formalities, she moved on.

Emma exhaled quietly.

"They're undecided."

"Yes."

Alexander studied the room again.

But before he could speak further, another voice interrupted.

"Miss Wilson."

Emma turned.

Tony Williams stood beside them once more.

His smile was polite.

But his eyes held something more calculating now.

"Mr. Lyon," he added with a nod.

Damian's expression remained calm.

"Tony."

Tony glanced briefly around the room before speaking again.

"Would you mind if I borrowed Miss Wilson for a moment?"

The request landed deliberately.

Damian didn't answer immediately.

Emma spoke first.

"This is a professional event, Mr. Williams."

"Exactly," Tony said smoothly.

"A brief professional conversation."

Damian studied him for a long second.

Then he looked at Emma.

The decision was hers.

She nodded slightly.

"I'll be right back."

Tony gestured politely toward the balcony doors.

"After you."

The night air outside was cooler.

City lights stretched endlessly below the balcony, the sound of distant traffic drifting upward through the quiet.

Emma folded her arms lightly.

"What did you want to discuss?"

Tony leaned casually against the railing.

"I wanted to know if you have reconsidered my offer."

Emma's expression remained neutral.

"No I haven't"

He smiled.

"why the bother, I am just a consultant"

His gaze sharpened slightly.

"You're much more than that."

She didn't respond.

Tony continued.

"I've been studying Lyon Global's approach to the Brooklyn project for months."

"And?"

"And their early strategy lacked… imagination."

Emma tilted her head slightly.

"You're criticizing them to their own consultant?"

"I'm complimenting you."

A brief silence passed.

Tony spoke again.

"Your redevelopment model is brilliant. Social integration, economic sustainability, environmental investment."

His voice lowered slightly.

"It's the kind of vision that changes cities."

Emma studied him carefully now.

"You didn't bring me out here just to flatter me."

"No."

He smiled again.

"I brought you out here to know if you can reconsider my offer."

Emma didn't move.

"Williams Holdings is expanding rapidly."

His tone remained calm, confident.

"We need people who can see the future of urban development."

Emma let out a small breath of disbelief.

"You know I'm currently consulting for Lyon Global."

"Yes."

"And you think offering me a job in the middle of a corporate rivalry is appropriate?"

Tony shrugged lightly.

"I think talent should go where it's valued."

Emma's voice cooled slightly.

"I'm valued where I am."

"Are you?"

The question hung quietly between them.
