Chapter 19 - Chapter Nineteen

The balcony doors opened quietly.

Emma stepped back into the ballroom, her expression calm but her mind far from steady.

Behind her, Tony remained outside for a moment longer, gazing over the city as if he had already claimed part of it.

His offer still echoed in her mind.

Adeyemi Holdings needs people like you.

People who can build something bigger.

Emma walked across the room.

Almost immediately, she felt his eyes on her.

At the far end of the ballroom stood Damian Lyon.

He wasn't speaking to anyone.

He was watching her.

And something about the intensity in his gaze made her heart shift uncomfortably.

She approached him slowly.

Damian spoke before she could.

"What did he want?"

Straight to the point.

Emma exhaled softly.

"it was about his offer."

The words landed quietly between them.

Damian's jaw tightened almost instantly.

Silence stretched for a moment.

Then Damian looked away briefly, his gaze scanning the room.

"Ambitious move."

His voice sounded controlled.

Too controlled.

Emma studied him.

"That's all you're going to say?"

Damian's expression hardened slightly.

"What else would you like me to say?"

She folded her arms.

"Maybe ask if I'm considering it."

He looked back at her.

"Are you?"

Her eyes held his.

"I didn't accept."

Damian nodded once.

"That seems… sensible."

Something inside her snapped slightly.

"Sensible?"

"Yes."

Her voice sharpened.

"That's all this is to you? A sensible business decision?"

Damian's gaze darkened.

"This is business."

"No," she said quietly.

"It isn't."

Around them, the reception continued, laughter, conversations, deals forming quietly.

But the space between them suddenly felt very small.

Emma stepped closer.

"He wants to know if I have reconsidered his offer"

Damian didn't react immediately.

But the words struck harder than she expected.

"That's a significant opportunity," he admitted.

"And you're completely fine with the idea of me leaving?"

His answer came too quickly.

"Your career decisions are your own."

Emma stared at him.

"And that's it?"

Damian forced himself to remain calm.

Control had always been his strength.

But something about this conversation was pulling at the edges of it.

"What do you want from me, Emma?"

Her voice softened slightly.

"Honesty."

The word lingered in the air.

For a moment, Damian said nothing.

Because honesty was dangerous.

Honesty meant admitting things he had spent years avoiding.

It meant confronting emotions he didn't fully understand.

But the thought of her working for Tony Williams or seeing her across negotiation tables instead of beside him…

Or the thought of losing her entirely.

Finally, he spoke.

"I don't want you to take the job."

The words were quiet.

But real.

Adanna blinked slightly.

"Why?"

Damian hesitated.

His father's voice echoed faintly in his mind.

Emotion is weakness.

But another voice pushed forward now.

His own.

"Because you belong here."

Emma shook her head.

"No."

Her voice trembled slightly.

"Try again."

Damian's chest tightened.

He stepped closer to her now, lowering his voice.

"I don't want you to work for him."

"Why?"

The question came again.

This time softer.

More vulnerable.

Damian stared at her for a long moment.

Then the truth finally broke through the walls he had built around himself for years.

"Because I don't want to lose you."

The words surprised even him.

Emma froze.

"You already pushed me away once," she whispered.

"I know."

"And now suddenly you don't want me to leave?"

Damian ran a hand through his hair in frustration.

"I was wrong."

The admission felt unfamiliar.

Uncomfortable.

Necessary.

"I thought keeping distance would make things simpler."

Emma's eyes glistened slightly.

"Did it?"

"No."

His answer came immediately.

"It made everything worse."

Silence surrounded them.

Damian took another step closer.

"I built my life around control," he said
