Chapter 69 - Neurons

After lunch it was biology.

Silas walked to his locker to grab his books.

Kate has been acting a little weird lately. She has been quite distant and dry, even when he really tries to make conversation.

I wonder if something is wrong? Silas pondered as he opened his locker.

Wonder what it could be… I don't think I've made her mad nor have I made her sad.

At least what I know of.

He closed his locker and made his way towards his next class.

When he arrived Kate was already seated. He walked over and sat down, his books making a sound as they hit the table.

Kate glanced over.

"Did you make that loud sound on purpose?" She asked.

Silas shook his head.

"No, what are you talking about?"

Kate eyed him suspiciously before returning to looking out the window.

"You know, I quite like the window seat." Silas said.

Kate again glanced over.

"Wanna switch?"

Silas shook his head.

"No, it's fine, you can have it for today."

Kate nodded.

"How generous of you."

Silas narrowed his eyes.

Yes. Something is definitely wrong. She doesn't respond like that usually.

Is she possessed? No. There are no demons in this verse… is she a shapeshifter?

Should I take a picture of her and see if her eyes glow? Maybe silver?

All jokes aside… if I didn't know better I would have thought she was someone else.

Silas was so deep in thoughts that he didn't even notice the teacher walking in.

The class had shifted from plants to the brain and neurons.

Neurons consist of a cell body, axon, dendrites, synapse, synaptic gap, etc.

We talked about how muscles work.

Axons send an electrical charge that causes the release of vesicles or "bubbles" containing acetylcholine.

This crosses into the synaptic gap and is received by receptors on the muscle cell.

This causes the muscle to contract.

When acetylcholinesterase, which is an enzyme, breaks down the acetylcholine, the components are taken back up by the neuron and reused.

The idea is the same with dopamine, serotonin, GABA, and noradrenaline.

For example with love.

Your axon terminals aka the ends release dopamine, and that is what makes you all giddy, and then your serotonin level shifts and makes that person stick on your mind.

And lastly there is oxytocin which is the part that makes you feel attached.

The more you know.

Silas looked at Kate who was writing furiously in her notebook and then trying to sketch a neuron.

She really likes studying. Silas on the other hand, wasn't a fan.

Just then the bell rang.

Silas closed his notebook with some relief.

Just as he was about to leave he realized Kate wasn't leaving.

"Are you coming?" Silas asked, confused.

"Wait! I'm almost done." Kate responded as she took a final look at the neuron Mr. Banner had painted on the board.

A few pen strokes later and a copy of the painting was complete.

Silas looked at it and nodded. He admired Kate's ability to stay so focused on a class so boring.

As they walked out of the classroom they split up and headed to their lockers.

Silas's next class was history which was always very slow and boring.

The entire history class he just sat and looked out the window. Sometimes the teacher would mention something interesting and he would focus.

But a majority of the time he just does nothing.

The class passed quickly and without surprises.

Silas walked out before the other students could block up the exits.

He hurriedly threw his things into his locker and headed towards the parking lot.

Just when he sat down in his car he spotted Kate who was trotting over.

Her big backpack made her look quite comedical.

A few seconds later she sat down in the passenger seat.

Silas looked over and asked with a smile.

"Ready?"

Kate nodded as she put on the seatbelt.

As they were driving down the country road needed to get to Kate's house, Silas thought about what he noticed earlier.

"Hey, Kate." Silas looked over.

Kate also looked over at their gazes met.

"Yeah?"

Silas looked towards the road again.

"Are you alright? You've been acting a little… strange lately."

Kate furrowed her brows.

"I have?"

Silas nodded.

"If you have any problems or wanna talk, I'm always open."

Kate looked out the window.

"I know…"

Silas smiled slightly, yes, I'm a good mental coach. I'm very trusted.

Even Google Reviews says I'm very capable.

Just then Silas pulled up in front of Kate's house.

"Alright, we're here."

Kate grabbed her bag and stepped out, before she closed the door.

"See you, and thanks for the ride."

Silas smiled slightly.

"No problem, and see you tomorrow."

Kate nodded and closed the door.

Silas watched her walk up to the door and step inside, first then did he drive away.

Now it was time to head to Alice's house.

He took out his phone and saw that he had a text message from Alice, she was asking if he was on the way.

He was.

After he sent a quick text back that he was on the way he put away his phone and drove for real.

After all, it was illegal to drive while using your phone…

He turned up the music volume and a few minutes later he was at Alice's house.

After parking he walked up to the door and before he could knock Alice opened.

Alice grabbed his shirt, stood on her toes and gave him a kiss.

"Come." She said and pulled his arm.

Silas smiled and followed her in.

After taking off his shoes he was led upstairs to the kitchen, where he saw a few dishes on the kitchen island.

Alice smiled and made a "ta-da~" gesture.

Silas looked around then asked.

"Where's Esme?"

Alice's expression froze and she started to pout.

"Esme isn't home, in fact we have the house to ourselves."

Silas nodded then it dawned on him. If Esme wasn't here… then who cooked this food.

He turned to Alice who seemed angry.

"Did you make this?" He asked and pointed towards the plates.

Alice nodded.

"Yeah…"

Silas walked up and grabbed a fork.

Looking at the various dishes on the counter he chose one that seemed to be pasta with chicken.

He stabbed his fork into it and looked at it hesitantly.

Hell, let's ball.

He shoved the fork into his mouth and chewed.

...

Enjoy. Mwah~
