The sky over Osaka was an impossible shade of blue. Following the previous day's light drizzle, the atmosphere had been scrubbed clean, leaving a canopy so vast and vibrant it felt as though the ocean itself had ascended to the heavens. Below, the city breathed with its usual rhythmic chaos—students rushing toward iron gates, salarymen tightening their ties, and shopkeepers rolling up their shutters to greet the morning sun.
Shin stood amidst the bustle, his expression a mask of practiced indifference. He was currently the unwilling spectator to a heated debate between Ai and Itsuki.
"I'm telling you, I'm not the loser here! You are!" Ai's voice carried a sharp, playful edge. She turned her gaze toward Shin, her eyes narrowing. "And besides, why did you have to go and scare Shin like that?"
Shin blinked, his composure momentarily slipping. "Wait... when exactly was I scared?"
Ai paused, a confused yet radiant smile dancing on her lips. "Wait, you weren't? Not even a little?"
"Keep it down, you lot!" a new voice cut through the air. A girl stepped forward, her posture radiating confidence. "My friend is perfectly sane. A bit eccentric, sure, but she's sharper than she looks."
Shin sighed, his gaze drifting toward the horizon. Another one? "I'm leaving," he muttered. "I don't know any of you people."
But the newcomer, Saki Amada, wasn't about to let him slip away so easily. "Hey! Since when did the 'Quiet Boy' of the class start hanging around here?" She leaned in, her eyes scanning him with surgical precision. "Shin? You're calling him by his first name, Ai? Tell me, what exactly is the nature of your relationship?"
"There is no relationship," Shin replied, his voice dropping an octave, laced with a cold irritation.
Saki let out a boisterous laugh that echoed against the school walls. "Oh! So the statue actually speaks? I thought you were just part of the scenery!"
The laughter hit Shin like a dull ache. For a fleeting second, a fractured memory surfaced—a shadow from a past he preferred to keep buried. Without another word, he turned his back on them and vanished into the school building, leaving Ai's concerned calls echoing behind him.
The Desk in the Sunlight
Lunchtime arrived with a golden hue. Shin sat alone at his desk, his eyes fixed on the rhythmic swaying of the leaves outside the window. He was a master of solitude, or so he told himself.
That silence was shattered by the sensation of soft fingers threading through his hair.
"Wow, Shin... your hair is incredibly soft," Ai murmured, her voice uncharacteristically gentle. She leaned closer, her scent faintly reminiscent of spring. "Hey, Saki wants to apologize. Come on, Saki, don't be shy."
Before she could continue ruffling his locks, Shin's hand shot up, firmly grasping Ai's wrist. The sudden contact sent a jolt through the air. Ai's face instantly flushed a deep, vivid crimson.
"First," Shin said, his voice a low, steady hum, "stop playing with my hair." He turned his gaze toward Saki, who was standing nearby with her head bowed. "And as for the apology... it's not necessary. Just leave it be."
Saki looked up, her usual bravado replaced by genuine regret. "I'm sorry, Shin. I didn't mean to mock you. I'm a bit of a mess sometimes... please don't take my words to heart. Can you forgive me?"
Itsuki chimed in, trying to break the tension. "Yeah, her brain's been wired wrong since we were kids. I usually just tune her out. She's a brat, but she's a lovable one."
"Are you complimenting me or insulting me, 'Baby'?" Saki pouted, her cheeks puffing out.
Shin's eyes widened. "Wait... 'Baby'?"
"Hahaha! Are you really that shocked, Shin?" Itsuki laughed, slinging an arm around Saki. "The whole school knows we've been together since middle school."
Shin turned back to the window, a small frown tugging at his lips. I guess I really haven't been paying attention to anything outside my own head.
The Duet Under Neon Lights
The evening found them in a cramped, neon-lit Karaoke box. After a chaotic, tone-deaf performance by Itsuki and Saki, the mic was thrust toward Shin.
"I'm not singing," Shin stated, his arms crossed.
"Oh, come on! Don't be a killjoy," Ai pleaded, grabbing his sleeve. She leaned in, her eyes locking onto his with an intensity that made his heart skip a beat. "If you sing with me, I'll cook you a special dinner tonight. My signature dish."
"I can cook for myself," Shin countered, but his resolve was already melting. When Ai looked at him like that—with hope shimmering in her eyes—it felt as though his very soul was being tugged by an invisible thread. His body betrayed his mind. "Fine... just one song."
The music began. Ai took the lead, her voice rising like an angel's hymn, pure and ethereal. Shin stood mesmerized, lost in the melody until his cue arrived.
He opened his mouth, and the room went deathly silent.
Shin's voice was a rich, velvet baritone—controlled, melodic, and hauntingly beautiful. He didn't just sing; he commanded the air.
"There goes our free ice cream," Saki whispered to Itsuki, her jaw practically on the floor. "He sounds like a literal professional."
Ai was momentarily stunned, her breath catching in her throat, but she quickly found her footing. Their voices merged into a perfect harmony, a crystalline blend of light and shadow. In that moment, it felt as if the world outside had ceased to exist. They weren't just singing a duet; they were communicating in a language only the two of them understood.
The Threshold
The walk back to the apartment complex was quiet, the cool night air a stark contrast to the heat of the Karaoke room. As they reached Shin's door, he prepared to offer a brief "goodnight."
"Wait!" Ai stepped in front of him, her eyes bright with triumph. "You kept your promise. You sang. Now, it's my turn to keep mine. I'm cooking dinner!"
"Ai, really, I can handle it—"
Before he could finish, Ai placed her hands on his chest and gave him a firm shove, forcing him into his own apartment. She marched in right after him, closing the door with a definitive click.
