Life is a complex puzzle, and for someone like me, the pieces never quite seem to fit. It's difficult, but when you choose to walk the path alone, the weight of the world feels twice as heavy.
I am Shin Sasaki. I recently moved to Osaka, a city known for its vibrant energy and loud streets, but to me, it's just another place to hide. People here often call me "weird" or "the ghost." I don't mind. I prefer the silence of my own thoughts over the hollow noise of human interaction. Trust is a luxury I can't afford; I've seen enough to know that human emotions are often just masks for betrayal.
The morning sun filtered through the classroom windows, but it did nothing to brighten the atmosphere for me. The room was alive with the chaotic symphony of high school life.
"Good morning! Hahaha, did you see yesterday's episode?" a boy laughed nearby, leaning over his friend's desk. "Yeah, man! I can't wait to see what happens next!"
I leaned my head against my palm, staring blankly at the chalkboard. Can't they just sit quietly for once? The constant chatter was like a dull rhythmic thumping against my skull. I closed my eyes, wishing I were in a place where the only sound was the rustle of leaves or the distant hum of the ocean. A place where no one expected me to talk, and no one tried to understand a soul they weren't even truly looking at. What a repetitive, exhausting existence.
Suddenly, the tone of the noise shifted. The loud boisterous laughter turned into hushed, admiring whispers.
"Yoshida-san, can you help me with this question? I'm totally stuck," a girl pleaded.
"You look so beautiful today, Ai! Is that a new hairstyle?" another added.
I didn't need to look up to know who they were talking about. Ai Yoshida. The 'Perfection' of our school. She was the sun around which everyone else orbited—beautiful, famous, and seemingly flawless. Every guy wanted to date her, and every girl wanted to be her friend.
"Alright, students, take your seats," the teacher commanded, stepping into the room.
I pulled my headphones around my neck, the music still faintly buzzing in my ears. My world was small, and I liked it that way. It spanned from the walls of my bedroom to the edges of this wooden desk. Everything else—including the idol of the school sitting just a few rows away—was just background noise.
"Yoshida-san, have you completed the assignment?" the teacher asked.
"Yes, Sir. It's right here," she replied. Her voice was soft, carrying a strange sense of calm that momentarily cut through my cynicism. It felt like a cool breeze on a humid day, or the sight of cherry blossom petals dancing in a spring wind. It was... unsettlingly peaceful.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over my desk.
"Hey, Sasaki-kun? Do you have an eraser I could borrow?"
I froze. It was her. For the first time, the girl who lived in the spotlight was looking directly at the boy who lived in the shadows. Her eyes were bright, and for a split second, I forgot how to breathe.
"Yes... here," I said, reaching into my bag and handing it to her without meeting her gaze.
"Thank you, Sasaki-kun!" she said, her smile widening.
"Welcome," I muttered. "But you don't really need to say thank you. It's just an eraser."
Ai tilted her head, a small, playful pout forming on her lips. "Why not? If someone helps you, you should acknowledge it. That's how people stay connected, right?"
I didn't answer. I simply opened my book and began to read, effectively ending the conversation. I could feel her staring at me for a moment longer, a confused but curious expression on her face.
"Are you ignoring me?" she asked with a soft, teasing laugh. "Fine, be like that. You don't talk to anyone... but maybe you should try talking to me every once in a while."
The rest of the day passed in a blur of lectures and scribbled notes. When the final bell rang, I was the first one out of the door. The Osaka sky was painted in deep oranges and purples as the sun began to dip below the horizon. The air was turning crisp, a reminder that winter was lurking just around the corner.
I walked toward my new apartment, my mind occupied with a list of chores. I had moved here from Tokyo to start over, to find a place where the air didn't feel so heavy with expectations. My parents were joining me tomorrow, but for tonight, I was alone.
The new apartment was spacious and, more importantly, quiet. But as I set my bags down, I realized with a groan that I had forgotten the most basic necessity. The fridge was empty.
"Shit... I forgot the vegetables," I hissed to myself.
Frustrated, I stepped out of the apartment, pulling the door shut with a bit too much force. SLAM! The echo rang through the quiet hallway. I winced, making a face at my own clumsiness. I really needed to get my head in the game.
"Sasaki-kun? What are you doing here?"
The voice came from right behind me. It was melodic, familiar, and completely impossible. I turned around, my heart dropping into my stomach.
Standing at the door of Room 402, dressed in a baggy hoodie with her hair tied up in a messy bun, was Ai Yoshida.
The 'Perfection' was my next-door neighbor.
To be continued...🌸
