Chapter 25 - Chapter 25 : The Night He Became Their Shield

The night had not yet ended. Smoke still lingered in the air, thick and bitter, curling above the fragile rooftops of the village. The faint glow of dying flames painted the ground in a dull orange hue, while shadows stretched long and twisted across the dirt paths.

The people of this small village, a settlement known as Duskmire huddled together near the center, their eyes wide with fear and exhaustion. Children clung to their mothers, elders whispered prayers under trembling breaths, and a few brave men stood with crude weapons in their hands, though their grips shook.

And in front of them… stood Aragon.

His breathing was steady, but his eyes were sharp, calm, focused, and alert.

The goblins had not stopped. Even after dozens had fallen, their bodies scattered across the outskirts, more continued to emerge from the darkness beyond the fields. Their guttural growls echoed through the night, a constant reminder that this was not over.

Aragon exhaled slowly. Then his Shadow Sense pulsed.

A sudden ripple passed through his mind, like a silent alarm,

Something… different….

Something stronger…..

His gaze shifted toward the distant hill beyond the village. And then a heavy step….Another…..

The ground itself seemed to tremble.

From the darkness, a massive figure emerged.

Nearly Ten feet tall, its body was thick with muscle, its skin a sickly dark green. Jagged armor made of bone and metal covered parts of its torso, and in its hand, it carried a crude but massive blade.

Its eyes glowed with intelligence and hatred. The goblins around it immediately fell silent. Then, in a deep, broken voice it spoke,

"Human…"

The villagers froze. Even Aragon's expression hardened slightly.

"A lone human… dares to slaughter my kin?"

The Goblin General stepped forward, its presence suffocating, its aura pressing down like a weight.

"I will crush you… and feed your bones to the dirt "

A faint silence followed. Then Aragon stepped forward.

Calm….

Unshaken…..

"I was wondering when the leader would show up..."

The villagers stared at him in disbelief.

Even now… he was speaking so normally?

The Goblin General let out a low, rumbling laugh….

"You are either brave… or stupid..."

Aragon tilted his head slightly

"Maybe both "

And then the fight began,

The Goblin General lunged forward with terrifying speed, its massive blade cutting through the air with a brutal force Aragon vanished.

Shadow Step….

He reappeared to the side instantly, the blade crashing into the ground where he once stood, splitting the earth apart.

Before the General could react Aragon moved,

Fast….

Precise…..

His sword slashed across the creature's arm, leaving a deep cut.

But the Goblin General didn't even flinch. Instead, it swung its arm wildly Aragon blocked or tried to.

CRACK…..

His sword shattered, the villagers gasped. For a brief moment, silence hung in the air. Aragon looked at the broken blade in his hand.

"…Yeah," he muttered softly, "That makes sense "

He let the broken sword fall. The Goblin General grinned.

"Now you die…."

But Aragon… didn't move in panic.

Instead, he closed his eyes for a brief second….

And reached inward,

Into the darkness…

Into the Shadow Vault Ring….

A ripple of black energy flickered across his hand and a new blade appeared.

A sleek, platinum black sword, its surface smooth and cold, as if it absorbed the light around it.

The air itself seemed to grow heavier Aragon opened his eyes.

This time…

There was something different in them.

"Let's try this one."

The General charged again. But this time Aragon didn't dodge.

He stepped forward….

Their blades clashed…..

A shockwave burst outward…!!

The villagers stumbled back as the ground trembled beneath the impact.

The General pushed forward with brute force, roaring as it tried to overpower him. But Aragorn stood firm.

Then, His shadow moved…..

It stretched unnaturally along the ground, twisting like a living thing.

"Shadow Bind…."

The darkness surged upward. Wrapped around the General's legs. Locked it in place.

The creature roared in fury, struggling to break free but for a brief second…

It was restrained….

And that second was enough. Aragon vanished again.

Shadow Step…

He reappeared behind it. His blade moved in a clean arc , a deep slash carved across the General's back.

Green blood spilled…..

The General roared, breaking free from the binding with sheer strength, swinging wildly.

But Aragon was already gone,

Faster….

Sharper…..

More controlled…..

The battle continued like that, movement, shadow, steel.

And then Aragon raised his hand.

The air shifted….

The shadows around him thickened, gathering unnaturally.

"Shadow Veil…."

Darkness wrapped around his body, cloaking him completely.

For a moment he disappeared.

The General looked around wildly.

Confused….

Angry…..

Then a whisper,

"Behind you….."

The blade struck,

Clean…..

Precise...

It cut deep into the General's side.

The creature staggered its movements and slowed its strength ,fading….

Aragon stepped back,

One final breath…..

One final strike...

He moved,

A single step…..

A single swing...

And the blade passed through the General's neck,

Silence...

The massive body stood still for a moment…

Then collapsed and the battlefield fell quiet. The remaining goblins scattered, fleeing into the darkness.

No one chased them…..

No one moved...

Because for a moment no one could believe what they had just witnessed.

One man….

Alone...

Standing amidst the bodies of over a hundred monsters.

Slowly… Aragorn lowered his sword.

The shadows around him faded.

And the night… finally calmed.

It was only after a while that the villagers began to move.

One by one, they approached him.

Hesitant….Then grateful….

A man stepped forward older, with tired eyes but a steady posture.

"I… I am Bram, the head of this village."

His voice trembled slightly

"You… saved us…"

Aragon shook his head lightly

"You held your ground"

" I just helped "

Bram smiled faintly

"No… we survived because of you"

Others gathered around.

A woman, Mira, the inn caretaker, wiped her tears,

"If you weren't here tonight… we would have been gone "

A young boy stared at Aragon with shining eyes

"You're like a hero…"

Aragon looked away slightly.

"I'm not "

But the way they looked at him, It said otherwise.

Later that night, despite everything, the villagers prepared food.

Simple meals…..

Warm…..

Shared….

They insisted Aragon sat among them, quietly eating as they spoke.

Bram shared stories of how adventurers treated them poorly.

Of how they were ignored, used, and forgotten.

"We have no kingdom," Bram said softly

"No protection….We survive… or we disappear "

Aragon listened….

Silently…..

And something inside him shifted

Not anger…..

Not pity….

Something deeper….

Understanding….

When morning came, the village gathered once more.

Bram stepped forward, holding a small pouch

"Please… take this, It's not much.

Five silver… a small token of our gratitude!"

Aragon looked at it. Then shook his head.

"I didn't do this for money "

Bram hesitated…

"But…"

"Keep it," Aragorn said calmly

"You all need it more than I do "

Silence….

Then… smiles…..

Genuine…..

Grateful...

Mira wiped her eyes again

"You really are different…"

Aragon stood adjusting his coat.

"Just… keep what happened here quiet…please, i don't want to draw any attention…"

Bram nodded immediately

"You have our word, but please we are hosting a feast for you . So please stay for the night… "

That evening, the village held a small feast,

Nothing grand….

But warm…..

Alive….

For the first time in a long while… there was laughter and Aragon Sat among them.

Not as a stranger….

But as something more….

And though he would leave soon…

Duskmire would never forget the night,

A lone man stood against the darkness and became their shield...
