Chapter 25 - Chapter 24: Whispers Beneath the Mangroves

The sea was quiet when Kai descended upon it.

Several massive Sea Kings floated lifeless around his small stretch of ocean, their colossal bodies sliced cleanly apart. Steam rose from the torn flesh as he tore into them without ceremony, eating with the raw efficiency of a predator restoring himself after battle.

Blood coated his hands and chin, but the wounds across his body closed at a visible pace. Torn muscles reformed, cracked ribs aligned, and his breathing steadied as vitality surged back into him.

"Still not enough," he muttered, ripping another portion free. "Shiki's talent burns hot… my body needs to keep up."

Lightning flickered faintly across his skin, no longer wild but controlled, coiling like a tamed dragon beneath the surface. When he finally stepped back, the ocean around him was stained red, yet his presence felt sharper—refined.

He exhaled slowly and reached up to his face.

The half-cracked Oni mask came free with a faint scrape.

For a moment, he stared at it in silence. The fissure running across its surface was a reminder of how close the battle had been.

"You did your job," he murmured, before storing it away.

A pirate ship drifted not far from the carnage, its crew trembling as they watched him from the deck. The Jolly Roger fluttered weakly in the wind, as though already aware of its fate.

Kai vanished.

In a blink, he reappeared on the deck.

The pirates barely had time to scream.

"W-Wait! We surrender—!"

Lightning flashed.

The sound of steel slicing through air echoed once, then several times in rapid succession. Bodies fell before the words finished leaving their mouths.

Kai's blade hummed softly as he wiped it clean.

"This time," he said quietly, gazing at the horizon, "I don't leave anyone behind."

The ship was his now.

He gathered their maps, supplies, and treasure with calm efficiency. Gold coins clinked into sacks, weapons were tossed aside, and navigational charts were studied carefully.

"Grand Line…" he whispered.

The wind shifted as if answering him.

Without another glance at the drifting corpses in the sea, Kai set sail toward the red horizon.

Far away, beneath towering mangrove roots that pierced both sky and sea, life carried on with deceptive normalcy.

The Sabaody Archipelago shimmered beneath layers of sunlight refracted through resin bubbles. Grove 13 stood quieter than most, but those who knew the seas understood it was never truly calm.

Inside Shakky's Rip-off Bar, laughter mixed with the faint clinking of glasses.

Silvers Rayleigh sat comfortably at the counter, swirling wine in his glass. His sharp eyes, dulled only slightly by age, stared into nothing in particular.

"Damn monster…" he muttered under his breath.

Behind the bar, Shakuyaku—known affectionately as Shakky—laughed softly while exhaling a thin stream of cigarette smoke.

"He really did it," she said, amusement dancing in her eyes. "Golden Lion Shiki… defeated."

Rayleigh took a slow sip. "Yah, that kid is really something."

He leaned back slightly, the wooden stool creaking under his weight.

"If the world found out he's nine," Rayleigh added dryly, "the chaos would be really something."

Shakky smirked. "Little brother is smart. He fought in large size, hiding his face."

Rayleigh's eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "That's what makes him dangerous."

The bar door creaked faintly as a breeze slipped inside, carrying distant market chatter. Outside, bubbles floated lazily upward, hiding the darker dealings that defined this island.

A Den Den Mushi suddenly rang.

The sound cut through the room sharply.

Shakky reached for it, lifting the receiver with an easy smile. "Moshi moshi."

A familiar young voice responded instantly.

"Mosi mosi big sister, how's everything going?"

Rayleigh's eyebrow twitched slightly at the casual tone.

Shakky's lips curved. "Ara… if it isn't the Storm King. Or should I say Oni Samurai? What should I call you?"

"Please stop joking," Kai replied. "I need some info."

Rayleigh leaned forward subtly, wine glass paused midair.

"Can you inform me of all human auctions happening in Sabaody Archipelago where Celestial Dragons might be involved?"

Silence fell inside the bar.

Even Rayleigh's relaxed posture stiffened slightly.

"L-Little brother…" Shakky began slowly. "You aren't thinking of anything dangerous, are you?"

There was a pause on the other end.

"Nope," Kai answered lightly. "Not interested in killing Celestial Dragons for now."

Rayleigh nearly choked on his wine.

"Maybe when I'm older and bored," Kai added casually.

Shakky exhaled a long stream of smoke. "Haaaa… you really know how to joke."

"I wasn't joking," Kai replied evenly. "Can you help me?"

Rayleigh covered his face with one hand.

"Don't worry about money," Kai continued. "I borrowed some pirates' ship. They were generous enough to leave their treasure behind."

Shakky laughed outright. "Ara, what a lucky guy you are."

She glanced at Rayleigh, who only sighed.

"The info you need will be ready soon," she said into the Den Den Mushi.

"Tnx," Kai replied. "And don't worry. Not gonna cause chaos there."

Rayleigh snorted quietly.

"Then I will take your words to heart," Shakky said smoothly.

"By then, I'll take the info from the bar personally."

"Sure," she answered. "Fresh juice and food will be ready."

"You are the best."

The line clicked.

Shakky placed the Den Den Mushi down gently.

"Told you he's going to come," she said, smirking at Rayleigh.

Rayleigh drained the rest of his wine. "Sigh… looks like I won't be able to sell myself for a while."

Shakky laughed softly. "Don't worry. Since he said he won't cause trouble, he won't."

"You really are confident, aren't you?"

She tapped ash into a tray.

"Sister's instincts."

Rayleigh stared at the ceiling for a long moment.

"That kid…" he murmured. "He's walking a blade's edge."

Outside, the Sabaody Archipelago buzzed as usual.

Human traffickers negotiated prices beneath bubble domes. Nobles strutted arrogantly through groves surrounded by guards. Pirates plotted in back alleys, unaware of the storm sailing toward them.

Far out at sea, Kai stood at the helm of his newly claimed ship.

The mangrove silhouettes of Sabaody appeared faintly in the distance.

He tightened his grip on the wheel.

"Human auctions… Celestial Dragons…" he whispered.

His eyes darkened slightly.

"Let's see what kind of world you've built."

The wind picked up.

Above him, clouds gathered—not in chaos, but in quiet anticipation.

A storm was approaching the mangroves.

And this time, it would not roar loudly.

It would whisper.
