The silence that followed the king's announcement was deafening. Eyes widened, mouths hung open, and words halted halfway through lips. Prince Marcus turned to the king, his gaze cold. He looked like one who had so much to say but suddenly couldn't find the right words. Even the elders had words they dared not utter.
"We all know, according to the laws of the kingdom, my heir takes over in case of health issues... or death." King Aldric emphasized every word. "My health has been declining, and while I will still oversee matters of court, the Crown Prince will be in charge."
The court held its breath; concubines glanced at each other.
"This court is adjourned," the king announced.
