Chapter 17 - Awakening

The roads out of the city were a nightmare.

But I'd expected that.

What I hadn't expected was how fast everything unraveled. Within hours of the Mist's descent, the infrastructure of civilization began to buckle. Traffic lights died. Cell service flickered and failed. Cars collided at intersections, their drivers either panicking or...

Changing.

We passed a wreck on the highway on-ramp. A woman was crawling out of a shattered windshield, her body contorting in ways that shouldn't be possible. Her skin was splitting, revealing something green and pulsing beneath.

Ryan covered his eyes.

Lily stared, her face a mask of horrified fascination.

"Don't look," Alex said, his voice raw.

I floored the accelerator, swerving around the wreckage.

The Mist was everywhere now—a thick, luminous fog that reduced visibility to a few dozen meters. It clung to the windshield, resistant to the wipers, as if it wanted to see inside.

[GLOBAL THRESHOLD: REACHED]

[AWAKENING SEQUENCE: PHASE 2]

The pain hit me like a hammer.

I gasped, gripping the wheel so hard my knuckles went white.

"Mom?" Lily's voice was distant, muffled.

[ABILITY INTEGRATION: PLANT MANIPULATION (LV.1)]

[ABILITY INTEGRATION: SPATIAL COMPRESSION (LV.1 – UNSTABLE)]

My vision fractured.

For a split second, I saw the world as a web of connections—roots spreading beneath the asphalt, cells dividing in the grass, the faint, humming energy of life everywhere. And overlaying it all, a grid of spatial coordinates, shifting and folding like origami.

Then it snapped back.

"Evie?" Alex's hand was on my arm. "Evie, talk to me."

"I'm fine," I managed. "It's... the powers. They're waking up."

His eyes widened.

"Yours? Or—"

A flare of light from the backseat.

We all turned.

Lily's hands were glowing—a soft, emerald radiance that pulsed in time with her heartbeat. She was staring at them, terrified and awed.

"I feel... weird," she whispered. "Like there's something under my skin trying to get out."

Before I could respond, a branch crashed onto the road ahead—a massive limb from a tree that had no business falling in this weather.

I slammed the brakes.

The SUV skidded, tires screaming—

And then we were somewhere else.

For a heartbeat, the world folded. The interior of the car compressed, stretched, and snapped back. When my vision cleared, we were three lanes to the left, safely past the fallen branch, the vehicle intact but my head pounding like I'd run a marathon.

Silence.

"What," Alex said slowly, "was that?"

"Spatial Compression," I rasped. "Short-range teleportation. Didn't know I could do that yet."

Ryan was trembling.

"My hands are hot," he said quietly.

I turned.

His palms were smoldering—tiny wisps of smoke curling from his fingers. A faint orange glow emanated from his skin, pulsing like embers.

"Fire," I murmured. "Alex, check yourself. Do you feel anything?"

He shook his head, then paused.

"Wait," he said. "I... everything looks different. Like... lines. Possibilities." He blinked rapidly. "I can see the safest path through the traffic."

"Tactical Perception," I said. "Good. That's good."

I looked at my family—awakening, terrified, changing—and felt a fierce, protective surge.

"Listen to me," I said. "The Mist is doing this. It's unlocking potential in humanity. We're not sick. We're evolving. But we need to get to safety before we figure out what that means."

Lily took a shaky breath.

"Okay," she said. "Okay. I trust you."

Ryan nodded, tears streaming down his face.

Alex reached over and squeezed my hand.

"Drive," he said. "Get us to the Valley."

I drove.

Behind us, the city burned.

Ahead, the Mist waited.

And somewhere deep in my bones, I felt the System settling into its new configuration—not a game anymore, but a part of me.
