Chapter 12 - Episode 12 - The First Real Change

Seo-yeon understood something now that her seventeen-year-old self never could.

Fate wasn't a single event.

It was a chain.

A sequence of small decisions, each one pushing the next into existence.

Break one link…

And everything after it could collapse.

She stood in the kitchen early that morning, pretending to eat while watching her father carefully.

He looked the same as always.

Calm.

Ordinary.

But now she could see it—the subtle tension in his shoulders. The way his eyes lingered just a moment too long on nothing. The quiet exhaustion he thought no one noticed.

He finished his coffee.

Set the cup down.

Reached for his bag.

Her heart sped up.

Not yet.

Not today.

But soon.

Very soon.

She lowered her gaze, forcing herself to breathe normally.

If she acted too early, he would notice.

If he noticed, he would become cautious.

If he became cautious…

He might still end up on that road.

She needed precision.

Not panic.

Her father moved toward the door.

He paused briefly, glancing back.

"Study well," he said.

The words were simple.

But she heard the meaning beneath them now.

Live better than I did.

Her throat tightened.

"I will," she replied softly.

And this time—

She meant it.

The door closed behind him.

She waited.

Listened.

Counted the seconds.

Then she moved.

She walked to the table.

Her fingers hovered briefly over the spot where the envelope had been.

She didn't touch it.

Not this time.

Instead, she walked to the calendar hanging on the wall.

June 13.

Six days left.

She stared at the date.

Her mind replayed everything she knew.

Her father was under pressure.

He needed money.

He needed a solution.

Which meant—

He would continue leaving the house.

Continuing driving.

Continuing walking toward that moment.

Unless…

She gave him a reason not to.

Her heart pounded.

This was the first real decision she would make.

The first real change.

She turned.

Walked toward her room.

Picked up her school bag.

Opened it.

And took out her phone.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she scrolled through contacts.

Her father's name stared back at her.

She had never called him during the day before.

Not in her first life.

Not like this.

Her thumb hovered over the call button.

This would change something.

She didn't know what.

She didn't know how much.

She didn't know if it would help—or make things worse.

But doing nothing had already led to tragedy.

She pressed the button.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then—

He answered.

"Seo-yeon?"

His voice was surprised.

Concerned.

She forced herself to speak.

"Dad… are you busy?"

There was a pause.

"…No," he said. "What's wrong?"

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

"Can you come home early today?"

Silence.

Not rejection.

Not yet.

Just uncertainty.

"…Why?" he asked gently.

Her mind raced.

She couldn't tell him the truth.

She couldn't tell him he was going to die.

"I…" her voice trembled slightly. "I don't feel well."

The lie hurt.

But it was necessary.

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Then—

"…Okay," he said.

Her heart stopped.

"I'll come home early."

Her breath caught.

The words felt unreal.

Fragile.

Powerful.

For the first time since she returned—

She had changed something.

She lowered the phone slowly after the call ended.

Her hands were shaking.

Her chest felt tight.

Not from fear.

From possibility.

She didn't know what this would do.

She didn't know what she had just set in motion.

But she knew one thing for certain.

The timeline had begun to move differently.

And fate…

Was no longer untouched.
