Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Destiny and the Professor’s Lab

"That's right. That Pokémon is Mesprit," Ash confirmed, his voice grounding the girl's excitement. "It's a legend of Sinnoh—the Being of Emotion. It doesn't just show itself to anyone."

Dawn's eyes sparkled, her initial wariness completely replaced by a relentless, infectious curiosity. She was a natural talker, a trait that in the "original" timeline might have grated on a younger, more impatient Ash. But now, with his veteran instincts and the foresight of a man who knew her potential, he answered her flurry of questions with a measured, calm patience.

"You're really from Kanto? That's so far away!" Dawn exclaimed, tilting her head with a finger to her chin.

"Not as far as it looks," Ash replied. "By boat and wing, it's only half a day's journey. Distance is just a matter of having the right partner to cross it."

As they walked toward Sandgem Town, the silence was frequently broken by Dawn's attempts to "befriend" the Pokémon on Ash's shoulder. While Pikachu tolerated her enthusiastic kneading with a stoic twitch of his ears, Aipom found the girl's affection overwhelming. After several minutes of being squeezed, the mischievous monkey retreated into her Poké Ball, leaving Pikachu to face the ordeal alone under the jealous gaze of Dawn's Piplup.

"Moo-croo!"

A sharp cry drew their eyes upward. A massive Staraptor was gliding toward a nearby cliffside, carrying a small, orange-furred monkey in its talons.

"It's Chimchar!" Dawn cried out. "It looks like one of the lab's Staraptor caught it. Professor Rowan won't have to worry about it being lost anymore!"

The Chimchar, dangling from the raptor's claws, met Ash's gaze and gave an awkward, sheepish scratch of its head. Ash felt a pang of recognition. This was the same Chimchar that would eventually face the cruelty of Paul and find its true fire under his own guidance. For now, he just watched it pass, a faint smile playing on his lips.

They reached the laboratory shortly after. The facility was a pristine white structure, humming with the quiet energy of high-end research. Standing in the foyer was a man who seemed carved from granite—stern, dignified, and radiating a quiet authority that would have intimidated most new trainers.

This was Professor Rowan.

Rowan was a scholar of evolution, a man whose lineage of students included names as prestigious as Professor Sycamore. Despite his cold exterior, Ash knew the man possessed a profound respect for the bond between humans and Pokémon.

"Dawn, Piplup. I see you've returned," Rowan said, his voice deep and resonant.

"Yes, Professor! Piplup was amazing," Dawn said, proudly patting the penguin's head. Piplup immediately puffed out its chest, hands on its hips in a display of unearned bravado that made Rowan give a curt, satisfied nod.

"And Professor," Dawn added excitedly, "we saw Mesprit at the lake!"

Rowan's expression shifted, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his features. "Is that so? It seems your journey has been sanctioned by the legends themselves." He then turned his piercing gaze toward Ash. "And you are...?"

"Ash, from Pallet Town, Professor," Ash said, bowing with the respect due to a master of the craft. "Professor Oak sends his regards."

"Ah, the boy Oak spoke of. You arrived faster than anticipated," Rowan noted. He took Ash's Pokédex to begin the regional update but paused. "The update will take a moment. I must finalize the selection for our newest trainer first."

Ash watched from the side as Rowan presented the three starters: Piplup, Chimchar, and a remarkably laid-back Turtwig. Dawn didn't hesitate; her bond with the Piplup she had rescued was already forged in the fires of the forest. As she received her Pokédex and Poké Balls, Ash felt the weight of the timeline aligning.

While Rowan's machines hummed, updating Ash's Pokédex with Sinnoh's regional data, Dawn walked over to him.

"So, Ash... what's your plan now?"

"The Sinnoh League," Ash said, his eyes flashing with a competitive fire that made even Pikachu sparks. "My first stop is Oreburgh City for my first badge. But the road goes through Jubilife City."

Dawn's eyes lit up. "Jubilife? That's where the first major Contest is! My dream is to be a top Coordinator." She paused, a hopeful smile tugging at her lips. "If we're heading the same way... maybe we should travel together? You can teach me the ropes of being a trainer, and I... well, I can make sure you don't get lost!"

Ash extended his hand, his smile small but sincere. "I think that's a fair trade. I'd be glad to have the company, Dawn."

They shook hands—the veteran and the novice, bound by a destiny that had survived even a shift in the world's fabric. With his updated Pokédex back in his pocket and his veterans ready in their balls, Ash stepped out of the lab and into the bright Sinnoh sun.

The script had been rewritten. The journey had truly begun.
