"I failed again..."
The words left Dawn's lips with a heavy sigh. Another empty Poké Ball lay in the grass, and the usually vibrant spark in her eyes had dimmed. Beside her, Piplup mirrored her stance, dropping its head in a dejected slump that would have been adorable if it weren't so pitiable. Continuous failure was beginning to eat away at her confidence; without Ash's steady presence and veteran encouragement, she likely would have started questioning her entire future as a trainer.
"Dawn, you have to believe in yourself," Ash urged, his tone supportive but firm. "Every champion started with a string of misses."
"I know, but 'fine' feels like a long way off right now," she muttered.
"Hey! Isn't that Ash?"
A loud voice broke the tension. A pink truck, absurdly decorated with a massive Magikarp design on the side, pulled over behind them. A dark-skinned young man with iconic squinted eyes hopped out of the passenger seat and ran toward them with exuberant energy.
"Ash! I knew that was your Pikachu the second I saw it!"
"Brock! It's been a while," Ash said, a genuine smile breaking across his face. Pikachu chirped a happy greeting, leaping toward their old friend. Brock, the former Pewter City Gym Leader, top-tier breeder, and the undisputed heart of Ash's previous travels, was back.
Brock sighed with nostalgia as he greeted them, but his eyes quickly drifted to Dawn. "Ash... who is your new friend?"
"This is Dawn. She's a new trainer from Twinleaf Town," Ash introduced her, before turning to Dawn. "And this is Brock. He's a Gym Leader from Kanto and an incredible Pokémon Breeder."
"A Gym Leader!" Dawn's dejection vanished, replaced by a polite bow. "It's an honor, Brock! Please, guide me!"
"Haha, no need for the formalities. Just 'Brock' is fine," he said, waving it off. Then, he leaned in toward Ash, his face glowing with a triumphant, manic energy. "Ash, you won't believe it. I've finally found her. True love!"
Behind him, a young woman with long purple hair stepped out of the truck. Brock's demeanor shifted instantly into that of a fawning admirer. "This is Ms. Miko. We're currently on a 'Love Drive' through Sinnoh!"
Dawn watched the pair with a bewildered expression. "A... love drive?"
"Exactly! Since I arrived in Sinnoh, we've been inseparable," Brock declared, his face radiating a joy that bordered on the delusional.
Ash looked at his friend with a complicated expression. He knew the script. He knew exactly how this ended. He opened his mouth to say something, but the twist arrived faster than he could speak.
"Brock, dear?" Miko said, her voice apologetic. "My darling just called. He says he needs to see me right away."
"Darling?" Brock's jaw hit the pavement.
"Don't look so sad," Miko said, climbing back into the driver's seat. "It was wonderful meeting your friends, and your cooking was divine! Hope we meet again!"
The Magikarp truck roared to life and sped away, leaving Brock standing in a cloud of dust, tears streaming down his face in a comedic waterfall.
"Ash... was he just dumped?" Dawn whispered, her mouth twitching as she tried not to laugh at the sheer speed of Brock's emotional collapse.
"Don't worry about it," Ash said, unfazed. "He's a professional. He'll be back to normal in three... two... one..."
"I've decided!" Brock roared, throwing his hands into the air with sudden, fiery determination. "I will become the greatest breeder in the world! Ash, Dawn—let's go! Our journey continues!"
"Right. Glad to have you back, Brock," Ash said. He and Pikachu shared a knowing look; their gourmet meals were officially back on the menu.
The Sinnoh trio was finally complete. As they set their sights on Jubilife City, the group prepared to enter a nearby forest. However, their path was blocked by a boy with a mop of purple hair and a cold, piercing gaze. He wore an unchanging poker face that radiated an aura of "don't waste my time."
Ash felt the air grow heavy. This was Paul—Shinji. The rival who represented everything Ash stood against, and the man who would become his greatest challenge in this region.
Paul's gaze didn't linger on Ash or Dawn; it locked onto the Pikachu on Ash's shoulder. "That Pikachu looks well-trained," Paul said, his voice a flat, clinical monotone. "Want to battle?"
Ash's hand moved to his belt, his eyes narrowing. He didn't just see a rival; he saw a tactical obstacle that needed to be dismantled. "I never turn down a challenge, Paul. Let's see what you've got."
