The afternoon sun draped the Sinnoh plains in a golden hue, providing a perfect backdrop for the trio's post-lunch siesta. However, for Dawn, rest was the last thing on her mind. She was currently frozen in a deep squat, her eyes wide and twinkling with the unmistakable light of obsession.
"Wow... how can anything be this cute?" she whispered.
In front of her sat a squirrel-like Pokémon with fur as white as a fresh drift of snow. Its large, blue ears trailed down into elegant stripes, and its yellow cheek pouches crackled with a low-voltage hum. Its tail was a fluffy masterpiece, nearly twice the size of its body.
Ash watched from the shade of a tree, a wry smile on his face. He knew this Pokémon well. In the competitive annals of his previous world, this "White Devil" had become a legend for tanking a Draco Meteor to clinch a world championship.
"Careful, Dawn," Ash warned. "That squirrel looks like a husky in a tiny body. It's got enough energy to tear a house down."
"I don't care! I'm catching it!"
Dawn lunged into action. "Piplup, use Peck!"
Piplup charged, its beak glowing, but Pachirisu didn't just dodge—it danced. With a playful "Juma~!", it side-stepped the attack and blew a Sweet Kiss toward the penguin. The pink heart-shaped energy struck Piplup square in the chest, leaving the poor bird wandering in circles, hopelessly confused.
"It knows Sweet Kiss?" Ash raised an eyebrow. "That's a high-level move for a wild Pachirisu. This little guy has been around the block."
Dawn, realizing Piplup was outmatched, recalled it and sent out her veteran. "Buneary, Ice Beam!"
Buneary gave a quick wink to Pikachu before unleashing a freezing spiral of energy. But Pachirisu was a white blur, using Quick Attack to weave through the beams and slam into Buneary's side. The rabbit tumbled but recovered, leaping high for a Bounce that finally landed, sending the squirrel face-planting into the dirt.
"Now! Finish it with Ice Beam!"
As Buneary gathered energy, Pachirisu scrambled up, its entire body glowing with a chaotic blue light. It unleashed a massive, unrefined Discharge.
ZAP!
Ash remained untouched, as Pikachu stood in front of him like a lightning rod, absorbing the excess current with a satisfied "Pika~". Brock and Dawn, however, weren't so lucky. Brock sat there, exhaling a puff of grey smoke, his hair static and his limbs numb.
But Dawn... Dawn was the real spectacle. Her beautiful blue hair had been blasted into a jagged, hedgehog-like explosion of spikes, crackling with residual blue sparks.
"Pfft—HAHAHA!" Ash and Pikachu doubled over, unable to contain themselves.
"DON'T LAUGH!" Dawn stomped her foot, her hair swaying like a sea urchin.
"Sorry, sorry!" Ash gasped, pointing toward the field. "But look! It's your chance!"
Pachirisu had exhausted itself with the big move and was still shivering from the graze of Buneary's Ice Beam. Dawn didn't even stop to fix her hair; she whipped a Poké Ball with perfect form. Wobble... wobble... click.
"I caught it! I knew it would be no problem!" she cheered, holding the ball high.
The honeymoon period lasted exactly until the next morning.
Ash woke up to the sound of frantic splashing and Dawn's high-pitched commands for Bubble Beam. He stepped out of his tent to find the campsite in a state of utter wreckage. Pachirisu, fueled by a night of sleep and a chaotic soul, had completely dismantled Dawn's tent. Dawn herself stood there with "explosion hair" again, looking like she hadn't slept a wink.
"Energetic, isn't it?" Brock noted, casually flipping pancakes while the squirrel zoomed around his legs.
By mid-morning, Dawn was sitting on a log, her head in her hands. She watched as Pachirisu ignored her calls to train, preferring instead to chase its own tail in high-speed circles.
"Ash... maybe I'm not the right trainer for it," Dawn whispered, her voice cracking. "It won't listen. It just wants to play. Should I... should I release it?"
"Are you really that low on confidence?" Ash said, walking over. He signaled Pikachu. "Sometimes a little discipline is all it takes to show you care."
Pikachu moved in a flash, using Quick Attack to pin the squirrel to the grass before it could even blink. Pachirisu tried to use Discharge, but Ash reached down and gently grabbed its tail. His "Super True Human" physique barely felt the tingle.
"Being naughty is fine, little guy," Ash said, stroking the soft fur of the tail. "But look at your partner. She's worried about you."
Pachirisu stopped struggling. It looked at Dawn, who was watching with bated breath. The squirrel wriggled out of Ash's grip and hopped into Dawn's lap, rubbing its glowing yellow cheeks against her hand in a silent apology.
"Pachirisu..." Dawn hugged the White Devil tight, her confidence flooding back.
"See?" Ash smiled, adjusting his hat. "Pokémon always give you the answer. You just have to be patient enough to hear it."
