Morning came with a strange sense of direction.
For the first time in days, Ren woke up knowing exactly where they were going and what they would find when they got there. No guessing. No wandering. Just a straight path toward something built by people who understood at least a fraction of what this world had become.
The desert air was cool when he opened his eyes.
The fire had burned down to ash. The sky was pale blue, and the sun had not fully risen yet. The rocky ridges around their camp cast long shadows that stretched across the ground like fingers.
Jonah was already awake.
Of course he was.
Ren pushed himself up and stretched, feeling the soreness from the fight with the roadrunner still lingering in his muscles. It wasn't as bad as yesterday, but it hadn't fully faded either.
Mara handed him a small portion of dried food.
"Eat," she said. "We're moving soon."
Ren took it.
"Didn't even say good morning."
"You're alive. That's your good morning."
Ren smirked slightly and took a bite.
Cal was already packing up his materials, carefully sealing the containers of paint and wiping dried residue from his hands. Elise stood on the ridge again, watching the horizon like she hadn't moved all night.
Mercer sat a few feet away, writing rapidly in his notebook.
Ren walked over and crouched beside him.
"You ever sleep?" Ren asked.
Mercer didn't look up.
"Occasionally."
Ren leaned slightly to read the page.
Sketches of the roadrunner filled the paper. Notes circled around it. Arrows pointing to wings, muscles, airflow patterns.
"You're obsessed," Ren said.
Mercer smiled faintly.
"Curious."
"Same thing."
Jin stood nearby, exactly as he had the night before. Hat low. Sword at his side. Piece of grass back in his mouth.
Ren glanced at him.
"You always wake up like that?"
Jin shrugged.
"I don't really sleep."
Ren blinked.
"Yeah, that's not creepy at all."
Jonah called them together.
"We move now."
No one argued.
They packed quickly and left camp within minutes.
The sun rose as they walked.
Light spread across the desert, revealing the land ahead in full detail. The rocky terrain from the previous day gave way to a more structured landscape. The ground felt firmer. The vegetation was denser.
Ren noticed something else.
Tracks.
Not animal tracks.
Human ones.
"People come through here," he said.
Mercer nodded.
"Supply runs. Patrols. Researchers."
Ren followed the prints for a moment before looking ahead again.
The facility was closer now.
Still distant, but no longer just a shape on the horizon.
He could see the outer fence clearly.
Tall.
Metal.
Reinforced.
Beyond it, concrete structures rose from the ground in clean, sharp lines that felt completely out of place in the middle of the desert.
It looked like something from before.
Before everything changed.
"Feels weird," Ren said.
"What does?" Cal asked.
"Seeing something normal."
Cal smiled slightly.
"It won't be as normal as you think."
They continued walking.
As they got closer, Ren began noticing signs of activity.
Sensors mounted on poles along the outer perimeter.
Small devices embedded in the ground that looked like they monitored movement.
Cameras.
Old world technology mixed with something else.
Something newer.
Something shaped by legends.
Mercer pointed ahead.
"Stay close," he said. "The outer systems will register us."
Ren raised an eyebrow.
"Register us how?"
"You'll see."
They crossed an invisible line.
Ren felt it immediately.
A faint pressure in the air.
Like walking through a thin wall of energy.
He stopped for a second.
"You felt that?" he asked.
Mara nodded.
"Yes."
Cal looked around with interest.
"Detection field," he said.
Mercer smiled.
"Exactly."
Ren exhaled.
"Of course it is."
They continued forward.
A low hum filled the air now.
Not loud.
But constant.
As they approached the fence, Ren saw movement along the top.
Small automated turrets rotated slightly, tracking their approach.
He tensed.
Jonah didn't.
"Relax," Mercer said. "They won't fire unless you give them a reason."
"That's comforting," Ren muttered.
They reached a large gate built into the fence.
It stood at least fifteen feet tall, reinforced with thick metal plating. A control panel sat to one side.
Mercer stepped forward and pressed his hand against it.
For a moment nothing happened.
Then the panel lit up.
A soft mechanical voice spoke.
"Identity confirmed. Welcome back, Dr. Mercer."
Ren blinked.
"That's new."
The gate began to open with a deep mechanical sound.
As it parted, Ren got his first clear view inside.
The facility was larger than he expected.
Multiple buildings spread across the enclosed area. Some looked like laboratories. Others like storage units or living quarters.
People moved between them.
Not many.
But enough to show the place was active.
Ren stepped through the gate.
The moment he crossed inside, the feeling changed.
The desert was still there.
But it felt… contained.
Controlled.
Organized.
"Feels different," Ren said.
"It is," Mercer replied. "We've stabilized the environment inside the perimeter."
Ren looked around.
"How?"
Mercer smiled.
"Carefully."
A few people approached as they entered.
One of them, a woman in a lab coat with short dark hair, stopped in front of Mercer.
"You're late," she said.
Mercer grinned.
"I brought something interesting."
He gestured toward the group.
"And them."
The woman looked them over.
Her eyes lingered on Jonah.
Then on Ren.
Then on Jin.
"Legend holders," she said.
"Yes," Mercer replied.
She nodded slowly.
"Good. We need more data."
Ren crossed his arms.
"Glad to help, I guess."
She extended a hand.
"Dr. Alvarez."
Ren shook it.
"Ren."
She turned back to Mercer.
"We've had new developments."
Mercer's expression shifted immediately.
"What kind?"
Alvarez glanced toward the main building.
"Inside."
Ren exchanged a glance with Jonah.
That didn't sound casual.
Jonah nodded slightly.
They followed.
As they walked through the facility, Ren took everything in.
Equipment lined the walls of some buildings.
Generators hummed quietly.
Guards stood at certain points, some carrying weapons, others clearly relying on legends instead.
People moved with purpose.
Focused.
Just like Mercer had said.
They entered the main structure.
The interior was cooler.
Cleaner.
More structured than anything Ren had seen in weeks.
Screens lined the walls, displaying data Ren couldn't fully understand. Charts. Readings. Maps.
Alvarez led them into a large room.
At the center stood a reinforced glass chamber.
Inside it, something moved.
Ren stepped closer.
"What is that?"
The shape inside shifted.
It looked like a small animal.
But something about it felt wrong.
Its body didn't match any creature Ren recognized.
And behind it…
A faint, unstable outline flickered.
Just like the roadrunner.
But more distorted.
Mercer stepped forward slowly.
"No," he said quietly. "That's not possible."
Alvarez crossed her arms.
"It is."
Ren looked between them.
"Someone want to explain?"
Alvarez's gaze stayed on the creature.
"We think it's a developing legend host."
Ren frowned.
"Developing?"
Mercer shook his head.
"That shouldn't happen."
Alvarez looked at him.
"Things are changing."
The creature inside the chamber twitched.
The blurry outline behind it pulsed.
Unstable.
Unfinished.
Ren felt a chill run down his spine.
This wasn't just another animal with a legend.
This was something else.
Something new.
And it was only the beginning.
