Chapter 116 - remained awkward

The warmth of the evening lingered even after the plates were cleared and the last bits of laughter faded into a quieter calm. One by one, they rose from the dining table, the soft scrape of chairs against the floor blending with the low hum of the city outside. Elena gathered the dishes with a casual efficiency, nudging Luca to help. He rolled his eyes at first but followed anyway, sleeves pushed slightly up as he carried the plates toward the kitchen. Their voices drifted faintly from there—light teasing, small arguments over who was doing more work—something ordinary, almost comforting in its simplicity.

Meanwhile, Ethan moved into the hall, settling onto the couch with a quiet exhale. The files and documents were already in his hands again, his focus slipping back into that familiar, controlled rhythm. His posture relaxed on the surface, but his mind was clearly still working, still sorting through everything from earlier—the mission, the meeting, the weight of what was coming.

A few seconds later, Yuna walked in.

She didn't say anything at first. She just came closer and sat beside him, close enough that their shoulders brushed. Then, without hesitation, she leaned her head gently against his shoulder, her eyes closing as if she had been waiting for that moment of quiet.

Ethan paused.

Not completely—but just enough.

His eyes shifted slightly toward her, noticing the softness in her expression, the way her breathing slowed as she settled there. For a moment, the documents in his hand lost their importance.

But only for a moment.

Then he resumed, though his movements were slower now, more absent-minded.

Yuna stayed still, her presence calm, grounding.

It was a silence that didn't feel empty.

It felt shared.

After a while, the sounds from the kitchen faded as Elena and Luca finished up. They returned to the hall, Luca dropping onto the opposite couch with a faint stretch while Elena sat nearby, glancing between Ethan and Yuna with a small, knowing smile.

"You two look… surprisingly peaceful," Elena commented lightly.

Yuna didn't lift her head, but she smiled faintly. "We are."

Then, after a small pause, she spoke again—this time with a hint of excitement returning to her voice.

"Ethan's birthday is coming up," she said, opening her eyes slightly but not moving away. "We should celebrate it properly."

Luca raised an eyebrow. "Properly meaning what?"

Yuna lifted her head just enough to look at them, her eyes bright. "A party," she said. "A big one. I have a surprise for him."

Elena immediately leaned forward, intrigued. "A surprise? Now I'm interested."

"We can invite business partners too," Elena added quickly, her tone picking up energy. "And family. Make it a proper event."

Yuna nodded eagerly. "Yes, exactly."

Across from them, Ethan closed the file slowly, setting it aside as he looked at Yuna. There was something in her expression—something genuine, excited—that made it hard to refuse.

"Alright," he said simply.

Yuna turned back toward him, smiling, and before he could react, he reached out and gently cupped her face in his hand. His thumb brushed lightly against her cheek, his gaze softer than usual.

For a second, neither of them spoke.

Then Yuna blinked, slightly surprised, and let out a small breath. "I… also have a request," she said, her tone shifting just a little.

Ethan's hand lowered slowly. "What is it?"

She hesitated only briefly. "I want to stay here… with you. Alone."

The words were simple—but they carried more meaning than they seemed.

Luca let out a quiet, almost amused breath from across the room. "So what, I'm getting kicked out now?"

Ethan didn't even look at him. "You can take another place."

Luca scoffed lightly. "That's generous."

Yuna glanced between them, then added casually, "You can stay with Elena."

There was a brief pause.

Elena blinked.

Luca didn't respond immediately—but the shift in his expression didn't go unnoticed. It was subtle, barely there, but enough.

Yuna caught it.

And she understood.

A small, knowing smile crossed her face, but she didn't say anything.

"Fine," Luca muttered eventually, leaning back again, though there was less resistance in his tone now. "I'll manage."

Elena rolled her eyes slightly but didn't argue either, a faint hint of color rising to her cheeks that she quickly hid.

The conversation faded after that, the night settling into something quieter again. One by one, they drifted toward their rooms, the earlier energy giving way to exhaustion.

Later that night, the penthouse was silent.

In Ethan's room, the lights were dim, the city glow filtering softly through the windows. Yuna lay on one side of the bed, her breathing slow and even, her body finally giving in to rest.

Beside her, Ethan lay awake.

Not moving.

Not sleeping.

His eyes were open, staring at nothing in particular, his mind still caught between two worlds—the one beside him, calm and warm—and the one waiting for him outside, dark and complicated.

Yuna shifted slightly in her sleep, her hand brushing lightly against him.

Instinctively, his hand moved, resting gently over hers.

A quiet gesture.

Unconscious.

But real.

Across the hall, Luca remained awake too, staring at the ceiling in his own room, his thoughts no less heavy. And in another room, Elena lay still, her mind replaying everything she had seen, everything she had heard.

The night held them all in place.

For now.

Because beneath the quiet—

Everything was still moving.

And soon—

Nothing would stay this peaceful.

The night deepened, stretching quietly across the penthouse, wrapping every room in a stillness that felt almost fragile. Outside, the city lights flickered endlessly, distant and unaware of the tension quietly building inside these walls. In the bedroom, Yuna slept peacefully, her breathing soft and steady, her face relaxed in a way it hadn't been earlier. One of her hands rested unconsciously over her stomach again, a gesture that had started to come naturally without her even realizing it.

Beside her, Ethan remained awake.

His eyes were still open, staring into the dim ceiling, his mind refusing to slow down. The warmth of her presence beside him should have calmed him—and in some ways, it did—but it also made everything heavier. Because every peaceful second like this only reminded him of what he stood to lose.

His gaze shifted slightly toward her.

She looked… safe.

Untouched by everything he had seen, everything he was about to do.

His hand moved almost unconsciously, brushing lightly against hers again, as if confirming she was really there. For a moment, he allowed himself to just feel that—her presence, her warmth, the quiet connection between them.

Then reality crept back in.

Richard Blackwood.

The name alone was enough to tighten something in his chest again.

He exhaled slowly, careful not to disturb her. "You deserve better than this…" he murmured under his breath, his voice barely a whisper.

But he didn't move away.

Didn't pull back.

Because despite everything—

He couldn't.

Across the hallway, Luca sat on the edge of his bed, elbows resting on his knees, staring at the floor. His mind wasn't on the mission anymore—not entirely. It drifted, unexpectedly, to Elena. To the way she had laughed earlier, the way she argued with him in the kitchen, the way she didn't hesitate to stand her ground.

He shook his head slightly, almost annoyed at himself.

"This isn't the time…" he muttered.

But the thought didn't leave.

In the guest room, Elena lay awake as well, staring at the ceiling, replaying Yuna's words, her excitement, her happiness. And beneath that—

The secret.

The one she and Yuna now shared.

Her expression softened slightly, but there was concern there too.

"Will he really be happy…" she whispered to herself.

Because she had seen Ethan's world.

And she knew—

It wasn't simple.

Back in the main bedroom, Yuna stirred slightly in her sleep, her fingers curling faintly as she shifted closer to Ethan without waking. The movement was small, instinctive—but it pulled his attention back instantly.

He looked at her again.

And this time, his expression softened completely.

For a brief moment—

He let everything else go.

No mission.

No pressure.

No impossible choices.

Just this.

Just her.

His thumb moved gently over her hand, a quiet promise forming in his mind—one he didn't speak out loud.

No matter what happens…

I won't let anything touch you.

But even as that thought settled—

Another followed.

Because some things—

Couldn't be protected from.

And deep down—

He knew that when the truth came out—

It wouldn't just change everything.

It would test everything they had.
