People fear many things. The dark. Silence. Betrayal. The eyes that watch when no one is looking. But in this age, the thing people feared most could be summed up in a single word: Shadows.
Three days after the second ritual, Azel called them in.
Not just the four of them. All of Shadows.
That was the first signal. Azel called the four first-years for training, for assessment, for the specific variety of conversation that he delivered without looking at them. When he called all of Shadows into the common area and sat at the table and did not touch the card deck, that was something else.
They came in ones and twos. Arlo arrived first — which was surprising, or would have been surprising before you understood that Arlo's relationship with effort was more selective than it appeared, that he simply reserved it entirely for things that warranted it and gave nothing to the rest. He settled into the armchair with the ease of someone returning to a position they had never entirely left and closed his eyes. Milo came in behind him, sat across the table from Azel, folded his hands. Gus appeared from the kitchen with a tray he set on the side table without comment — small things, something warm. Cain came in last before the first-years, and went to the corner that was his corner, and stood there.
Eren came in with Kayra. Raphael was a step behind. Orin came through the door last and went to the wall and leaned against it.
Dusk was already in the room. He was always already in the room. His shadow sat two seconds ahead of him on the floor and the dark circles under his eyes were their usual depth and his coat was the same coat.
Azel looked at the table.
Then he looked up.

"There is a mission," he said.
His voice was what it always was. Flat. Sufficient. Not raising itself to meet the weight of what it was carrying, because Azel's voice did not do that — the weight was in the words and the words were enough.
"The Moregrave estate, two days' ride east of Safe Haven. House Moregrave is one of the oldest noble families in the city's history — three centuries of record, significant ties to the Academy, significant ties to the Lanterns." He paused. "Most of you will know the name from the celebration hall. Lucius Moregrave was there. He is not who we are concerned with today."
Rowan's voice came from somewhere Eren couldn't see: not in the room, but nearby — the corridor, the door left open. Then Mira's voice, quieter. Azel didn't look toward the sound.
"The estate houses a sealed chamber. The chamber contains a flame elemental — or what has been recorded in the Academy's files as a flame elemental, catalogued approximately one hundred and forty years ago when the original seal was placed." He looked at the table. "The seal has been weakening for the past three months. Lord Moregrave has requested Academy assistance. The request came to me."
Gus had set down the tray and was standing beside the side table with his arms at his sides, his open face carrying something that was not its usual warmth — not absent warmth, just warmth with something else underneath it, something paying attention.
"The mission is to reinforce or replace the seal. Assess the elemental, assess the chamber, determine what has caused the weakening, and address it." Azel's eyes moved across the room. "This is not a combat mission. It is a containment mission. The distinction matters because how you approach a containment mission is not how you approach a combat mission, and confusing the two is how people die doing the one when they thought they were doing the other."
A silence.
"Those going: Dusk. Cain. Gus. Arlo. Milo. Eren, Kayra, Raphael, Orin, Leila."
Arlo opened one eye. He looked at Azel.
"You're sending me on a field mission," he said. His voice was the voice of a man who had not been surprised in some time and was noting the sensation with mild interest.
"I am sending you on a field mission," Azel confirmed.
Arlo closed his eye. He appeared to consider this.
"Acceptable," he said.
Milo did not say anything. He was looking at the table in the way he looked at things when he was already working — already running the numbers, already thinking about what a flame elemental in a sealed chamber required, what a weakening seal implied about what had been happening in that chamber for three months.
Cain was looking at the wall.
Gus picked up the tray and brought it to the table. "For the road," he said, setting it down. "I'll pack properly tonight."
Azel looked at him for a moment. Then he stood.
"You leave at dawn tomorrow. The Academy's carriage will take you to the eastern crossroads. From there it is three hours on horseback." He picked up the card deck. He began to shuffle. "Lord Moregrave is elderly and in poor health. He will receive you personally. His estate staff will assist. Be thorough and be respectful — House Moregrave's cooperation with the Academy is not something we can afford to complicate."
He walked toward the inner room.
He stopped.
"The elemental has been in that chamber for a hundred and forty years," he said, without turning. "That is a long time to be sealed. What you find inside may not look like what the file says it is. Assess what is in front of you, not what the record tells you to expect."
He left.
The common room was quiet for a moment.
Then Raphael looked at the tray Gus had brought.
"Are those—"
"Cinnamon rolls," Gus said. "I made them this morning. Take one."
Raphael took one.
He looked at it for a second. Then he looked at Eren across the table, and the look said something that the room was probably not the right place to say out loud, something about mornings and towers and packs and the particular weight of departures that went with food that someone had made because they were worried about you and didn't know how else to say it.
Eren looked back.
He took a cinnamon roll.

The morning they left, Safe Haven was cold.
Not the sharp cold of deep winter — the particular cold of a season changing its mind, the air carrying a quality that it hadn't had the week before, a weight in it that sat differently in the lungs. The gas lamps were still burning when they loaded the carriage, the amber of them doing what amber did in grey morning light, which was not quite enough but present. The Academy courtyard was quiet. The autumn decorations Eren had noticed on the first night — the corn stalks, the small red-leaved bushes, the pumpkin seedlings that had grown to proper size now and sat in the garden beds with the comfortable authority of things that had been given the right conditions and had simply done what they did — caught the lamplight and gave it back in orange.
Nine people. One Academy carriage and three horses.
Dusk rode. Nobody had discussed it — it was simply apparent when the horses were brought out that Dusk would be on horseback rather than inside the carriage, and Dusk had taken the reins without comment. His shadow on the cobblestones was its usual wrong angle, two seconds ahead, and the horse, after a brief and pointed assessment of this fact, had decided to accept it.
Cain rode as well. He settled into the saddle with the efficiency of someone who had done this often enough that there was nothing to think about. The neck tattoo was visible above his collar — that single word, in the grey of early morning, catching no particular light.
Gus had a pack that was considerably larger than anyone else's. He had also, somehow, obtained a second pack, which he had secured to the carriage's exterior with the care of someone transporting something that could not be allowed to shift. Nobody asked. The smell coming from it answered most of the questions.
Arlo boarded the carriage and immediately occupied a diagonal across one of the bench seats, his white hair catching the lamplight, his eyes already at the threshold between open and closed. He was, in the opinion of everyone present, almost certainly going to be asleep before they reached the city gate.
He was asleep before they reached the city gate.
Milo sat across from him, a small notebook open on his knee, writing something in the cramped and precise hand that suggested he had spent years fitting more information into less space. He wrote without looking up as the carriage moved.
Kayra was at the window. The city moved past outside — the inner streets giving way to the outer districts, the buildings getting lower and further apart, the smell of the city changing as the merchant quarter fell behind. She watched it the way she watched everything: without the watching being obvious, without it being hidden.
Raphael had tilted his head back against the carriage wall and was looking at the ceiling in the way of someone who was either thinking very hard or thinking nothing at all. Eren had never been able to tell the difference with Raphael, and he had stopped trying.
Orin sat with his bow across his knees. He was looking at the window — at the same view Kayra was looking at, but from a different angle, seeing something different in it or the same things differently. His expression was his expression. He had not said anything since they loaded the carriage and he would probably not say anything for some time and that was simply what Orin was.
Eren watched the city gate pass overhead.
The barrier shimmered at the edges of his vision as they went through — that different shimmer, the one that had been there since the Celebration Hall, the one he had stopped being surprised by and had not stopped noticing. Outside the city the road was grey and the fields on either side were what autumn fields were: harvested, bare, the soil turned and waiting for the kind of cold that committed. The sky was low. Not threatening — just low, the kind of sky that had settled into the season and was staying there.
He leaned his head against the carriage wall.
Two days' ride east.
He closed his eyes and did not quite sleep.

They reached the eastern crossroads by midday.
The crossroads was what crossroads were — a junction, a weathered post with four arms pointing in four directions, a stone trough for horses that had been there long enough to have moss growing in the cracks. An inn on one corner, smoke from its chimney, the smell of something being cooked inside that carried across the road. Two other travelers at the trough, neither of whom looked up.
The carriage stopped. The horses were waiting — three more, brought from the Academy's stable the previous afternoon and stabled at the inn overnight. A young stable hand led them out, assessed the group of nine with the carefully neutral expression of a person who had learned not to form opinions about Academy hunters and the company they kept, and handed over the reins.
Arlo woke when the carriage stopped. He looked out the window. He looked at the horses.
"I don't particularly enjoy horses," he said, to no one specific.
"They don't particularly enjoy you either," Milo said without looking up from his notebook. "It works out."
Arlo considered this. He got out of the carriage.
They ate at the inn — quickly, the kind of eating that acknowledged hunger without making anything of it, the kind that left no one satisfied but no one still hungry either. Gus ate and said nothing, which meant he had opinions about what had been served and had decided not to share them, which was the most pointed form of restraint he possessed.
An hour after the crossroads they were on horseback, on the eastern road, three hours from the Moregrave estate.
The road climbed.
Gently at first — the eastern land rising toward the hills by gradual degrees, the fields giving way to older landscape, the soil darker, the trees taller and closer together. The road had been good near Safe Haven and was less good here, not poorly maintained but built for a different kind of use, a private road rather than a merchant road, a road that had been built to serve a specific destination and had stopped caring about anything beyond it.
The trees closed in.
Not threatening — old. There was a difference. Threatening trees were the trees of the island, the trees of the forest outside Safe Haven where the undead moved at night. These trees had the quality of trees that had been in one place for a very long time and had developed opinions about it. They were tall and their canopy was thick enough that the grey sky above became a grey-green light below, filtered and soft, the kind of light that made distances look like paintings and sounds travel differently.
Milo rode up beside Eren.
"The estate was built approximately two hundred and thirty years ago," he said. He had put the notebook away but the information was clearly still running. "Original construction was the main house and the east wing. The west wing was added sixty years later. The sealed chamber is in the original basement — the east side, under what is now the library."
"How do you know that?" Raphael asked from behind them.
"I read the Academy file."
"When?"
"Last night."
A pause.
"All of it?"
"It wasn't long. The original documentation is thin — whoever sealed the chamber in the first place did not leave detailed records. There are two subsequent inspection reports, both brief. The most recent is forty years old."
Eren looked at the road ahead. "Forty years."
"The Academy checks sealed containments on a rotation. Forty years is not unusual for a low-classification site." He paused. "Flame elemental was the original classification. Hazard level: moderate. Recommended inspection interval: thirty to fifty years."
Dusk, riding slightly ahead, said without turning: "Moderate."
His voice was flat. The flatness had a quality to it — not scepticism, not concern. Just the flatness of someone filing information under a different heading than the one it had arrived with.
Milo looked at him. "That was the original classification."
"I know," Dusk said.
Nobody said anything else for a while.
The road curved. The trees on either side grew taller, their roots visible at the road's edge where the soil had shifted over decades. Somewhere in them, birds — the specific birds of old woodland, not the birds of the city or the open field. Deeper calls, more widely spaced.
Then the trees ended.

The Moregrave estate sat on a rise.
Not a dramatic rise — not a cliff, not a hilltop. A gentle elevation, the kind that gave the house a view of the surrounding land without making any particular statement about it, the kind that said whoever had chosen this site had been thinking about the long term. The grounds spread out from the main house in all directions: formal gardens to the south, now in their autumn state, the geometric beds visible but stripped of their summer color; a working kitchen garden to the north, more honest about what it was; an orchard to the east, the trees old and unpruned in the way of things that had been left to their own judgment for long enough to develop strong opinions.
The house itself was stone — the same dark stone as the surrounding hills, quarried locally, fitted with the care of a period when people built things to outlast themselves. Three stories at the center, two at the wings, the roofline irregular and honest about its age, patched and modified over two centuries without pretending to be anything other than a building that had been used and was still being used. The windows were tall and narrow, the kind that had been designed for a colder world that had not yet learned to make glass in large sheets. Ivy covered the east wing from the second floor upward, not wild but managed, given enough freedom to be what it was and enough guidance to stay off the windows.
At the gate — two stone pillars, a low iron fence, the gate itself standing open — a man was waiting.
He was not old. Forty, perhaps, with the kind of forty that came from working outdoors for most of it: weathered through the face, built through the shoulders, the hands visible at his sides the hands of someone who had done physical work for a long time and had the particular ease of someone who no longer thought about it. He wore the dark clothing of estate staff — practical, well-made, the kind that was intended to last and did. He had the expression of someone who had been expecting them and was assessing whether they matched expectations.
They apparently matched closely enough.
"Shadows division," he said. Not a question. His voice was measured — not warm, not cold. Functional. "I'm Aldric Bren. Head of household." He looked at the group of nine with the unhurried attention of someone who catalogued people as a professional habit and was doing so now. "Lord Moregrave is expecting you. I'll take you in."
He turned and walked toward the house.
They followed.

The path from the gate to the front entrance was stone, the same stone as the house, worn smooth in the center by two centuries of foot traffic. On either side of it, the south garden ran in its autumn state — the beds geometric and exact, maintained with the care of someone who believed in their upkeep even when nothing was flowering, perhaps especially then. Stone edging, carefully kept. Topiary in three or four shapes that had been given enough time to become definitive. A fountain at the garden's center, dry now for the season, its basin clean.
Someone had recently raked the path. The leaves that had fallen from the two large oaks flanking the entrance had been gathered, and the faint smell of that gathering — the specific smell of autumn leaves collected and moved, earthy and sweet and slightly fermented — sat in the cool air.
Gus was looking at the kitchen garden as they passed it.
He was looking at it the way he looked at kitchens — with the specific attention of someone whose relationship to these things was professional. He noted the raised beds, the late-season greens still going, the careful composting at the far end. His expression said something, though what exactly it said was not entirely legible.
Two more staff were visible: a woman in the orchard to the east, working at something among the trees without looking up; a young man near the house's east wing, carrying a wooden crate with the careful balance of something full and fragile. The estate had the quality of a place that was inhabited, properly inhabited, the kind of habitation that came not from being busy but from being tended.
The front door was open.
Not standing open — someone had opened it as they came up the path. A woman stood in the doorway. She was perhaps fifty-five, her grey hair pinned back with practical efficiency, her dark dress the same quality as Aldric Bren's clothing — made to last, not made to impress. She had an assessment in her eyes that was different from Bren's: where his was the assessment of a man who catalogued physical facts, hers was the assessment of someone who had spent a long career reading people in rooms and had developed strong opinions about what the reading told her.
She looked at nine Academy hunters arriving at her employer's front door and she looked, specifically, at the state of their boots.
"Marta Voss," she said. Her voice was precise. "Housekeeper. Boots off before the blue carpet." She said this to the group as a fact rather than a request, stepped back, and held the door.
Arlo looked at his boots. He looked at Milo.
Milo had already begun removing his boots.
They removed their boots.

The interior of the Moregrave house was not what the exterior had prepared for.
The exterior had the quality of a house that was old and knew it and had stopped apologizing for it. The interior was the quality of a house that was old and had, over two centuries, accumulated the specific density of a place where people had lived and thought and collected and died and had their things remain after them. Not cluttered — organized, in the idiosyncratic way of a place that had developed its own logic over a long time. Bookshelves in the entrance hall, which was unusual, the shelves built into the wall on both sides of the passage, running floor to ceiling, the books on them the books of a family that had been reading for generations and had not thrown anything away. Portraits on the wall above the shelves — not the formal portraits of families that commissioned them for the portraits' sake, but the portraits of people who had been painted because someone had wanted a record of them, the faces in them specific and individual and looking out of their frames with varying degrees of willingness.
A Moregrave face — the same face in different configurations across several generations, the turquoise hair appearing and disappearing and appearing again like a recessive note in a long piece of music.
Eren looked at them as they passed.
At the end of the entrance hall, Aldric Bren stopped. He turned.
"Lord Moregrave is in the library," he said. "He will receive you there. I ask that you speak clearly — his hearing has been difficult for some years."
He opened the door.

The library was the east wing's ground floor, and it was a library in the way that the word was meant before it became a word for a room with a few shelves. The ceiling was high — the full two stories of the wing, with a narrow gallery running the perimeter at the upper level, accessible by a narrow spiral stair in the far corner. Every wall was shelves. The shelves were full. Not the full of a collection that had been assembled for appearance — the full of a collection that had been assembled over a very long time by people who read what was on the shelves and acquired more because they had run out of the things on the shelves and needed more.
The smell of the room was the smell of old paper and beeswax and something faintly mineral that Eren could not immediately identify — something in the stone of the building itself, perhaps, something the walls had accumulated or retained. The light came from tall windows on the south side and from lamps already lit against the grey afternoon.
At the far end of the room, in a chair beside the largest window, a man was sitting.
He was old.
Not old in the way of someone who had aged badly, not old in the way that was simply the accumulation of time making itself visible. Old in the way of someone who had been a specific kind of person for a very long time and had become more that kind of person with every year, the way certain things concentrated rather than diluted. He was thin — the thinness of advanced age, the body having made its arrangements with what remained — and the turquoise of the Moregrave hair had gone entirely white, though the structure of it was still the same, the cut still precise above the ears, the specificity of it unchanged. His hands were on the chair's arms, still, the hands of someone who had long since stopped needing to do anything with them.
He was looking at them.
His eyes were the amber of the Moregrave line — the same amber Eren had seen in Lucius, in Aldric Crane. In this face, in this light, the amber was deeper, older, the color of something that had been kept in the same place for a very long time and had settled into it.
He looked at the nine of them with those eyes and said nothing for a moment.
Then he said: "You are younger than I expected."
His voice was not weak. Old — it had the quality of age in it, the texture of it — but not weak. It carried.
Dusk said: "We are what the Academy sent, Lord Moregrave."
The old man looked at him. He looked at the shadow on the floor, at the specific wrongness of it, and did not comment on it. He had either seen Dusk's shadow before or was the kind of person who did not comment on things that had been established as facts.
"I see." He looked at the group again — across each face, with the unhurried attention of someone who was not going to rush this because he had decided not to rush this. "Shadows division. I knew Shadows, once. A long time ago." Something moved briefly across his face, old and particular. "Sit down, please. All of you."
There were not enough chairs.
There were never enough chairs in a room that had not been arranged to receive nine people. Marta Voss appeared from somewhere — she had followed them in without being noticed, or had been there before them; either seemed possible — and produced three more chairs from a side room with the efficient silence of someone who had been anticipating this problem since they arrived at the gate. They sat.
Lord Moregrave looked at his hands for a moment.
Then he looked up.
"I will tell you what I know," he said. "I should warn you that what I know and what the Academy's file says are not entirely the same thing. I have been aware of this discrepancy for some time. I was not certain, until recently, that it was my discrepancy to correct."
He paused. He looked at the window — at the grounds visible through it, the south garden, the bare beds, the dry fountain.
"The chamber under this library has been sealed for one hundred and forty-two years. My great-grandfather had it done. He told the Academy it was a flame elemental — a standard classification, a known hazard, the kind of thing that requires containment and receives it and thereafter receives the Academy's periodic attention and nothing more."
He looked back at them.
"He lied," he said. Simply. As if the word cost nothing. "Not about the need for sealing. About what was sealed."
The library was quiet.
The lamps burned. Outside, a wind had come up — the first real wind of the afternoon, moving through the orchard trees, audible through the tall windows as a low and intermittent sound that was present and then not present.
"My great-grandfather's journals are in this room," Lord Moregrave said. "They are not catalogued with the other books. They are in the locked case behind you — the one with the green binding on the case's edge." He did not gesture. "I have read them. I have read them a great many times, because they were the only source I had for what is under this library, and what is under this library has been my family's responsibility since the day my great-grandfather chose to make it so."
He stopped.
He looked at each of them, one by one, with those old amber eyes.
"The seal is weakening," he said. "You can feel it in the house — or I can feel it, perhaps others cannot. The temperature in the lower levels has been rising for three months. Not dramatically. But consistently. There is a warmth in the stone that was not there before, a warmth that has no external source."
He paused again. He set his hands more deliberately on the chair's arms.
"What my great-grandfather sealed under this library was not a flame elemental," he said.
His voice had not changed. It was still the voice of a man who had made his peace with what he was about to say, who had arrived at the saying of it through a long road and was now simply at the end of that road.
"What my great-grandfather sealed under this library," Lord Moregrave said, "is Fenrir.
The name landed in the room.
Outside, the wind moved through the orchard.
The lamps burned.
Nobody spoke.
