People fear many things. The dark. Silence. Betrayal. The eyes that watch when no one is looking. But in this age, the thing people feared most could be summed up in a single word: Shadows.
Lord Moregrave did not speak again after he said the name.
He looked at his hands. Then at the window. The afternoon light through the tall glass was the light of late autumn — low, amber-edged, the kind that made everything look like it was already in the past. Outside, the orchard trees moved in the wind that had come up, their bare branches describing small arcs against the grey.
Nobody in the library spoke either.
Dusk broke it. He broke it the way he broke most silences — not by addressing the silence itself, but by moving past it to the next necessary thing.
"We'll need to see the chamber," he said. "Tonight, if possible. Before we assess anything we need eyes on the seal itself."
Lord Moregrave nodded. Once, slowly, the nod of a man who had been carrying something for a long time and had finally set it on a table where other people could look at it.
"Aldric will show you whatever you need." He paused. "There is time before dark. If you wish to understand the estate — the layout, what is where — Aldric can walk you through it. It may matter." He looked at Dusk. "It may matter more than you expect."
Something in how he said it.
Not a warning. An observation. The observation of someone who had lived in a house for a very long time and had learned things about the house that could not be catalogued.
Dusk looked at him for a moment. Then he turned.
"Eren. Kayra. Raphael." He said the names without looking at them. "Go with Bren. Learn the layout." He paused. "The rest of us will review what Lord Moregrave has."
Eren looked at the window. At the amber light going lower.
"Before dark," he said.
"Before dark," Dusk confirmed.

Aldric Bren was waiting in the entrance hall.
He had their boots lined up — which nobody had asked him to do, and which he had done anyway, with the particular efficiency of someone who anticipated needs before they became requests. He looked at the three of them and gave the same unhurried assessment he had given at the gate, the assessment that catalogued and filed and moved on.
"I'll take you through the estate," he said. "Top to bottom, inside and out. Ask questions when you have them."
He turned and walked. They followed.

"Basement first," Bren said, opening a door at the end of the east corridor that Eren had not noticed — set flush with the wall, the same stone, the kind of door that had been built not to be seen. The stairs behind it went down into a cool that was different from the cool of the ground floor: deeper, drier, the cool of earth that had not seen sun in two centuries.
The basement ran the full length of the east wing. Stone floor, stone ceiling, stone walls with iron brackets holding lanterns that Bren lit one by one as they moved through. Two sections, divided by a thick wall with an archway.
The first was the materials store.
Shelves on every wall, floor to ceiling, the shelves built from the same dark wood as the library's gallery. What was on them was the accumulated provisioning of a large estate across many years: dry goods in sealed jars, preserves in wax-topped crocks, bolts of cloth in the far corner still wrapped in the oilskin they had arrived in, tools in organized rows, coils of rope. Everything labeled in a handwriting that had been consistent across decades — or the handwriting had been trained to look consistent, which was the same thing in practice.
Raphael looked at the shelves. He looked at the rope.
"How old is some of this?" he asked.
"The preserves are from this autumn," Bren said. "The rope is older. Some of the tools have been here since my predecessor's time." He moved toward the archway. "The armory is through here."
The armory was smaller than the store but denser. Weapons on the walls in organized rows: swords of several types, spears, crossbows with their bolts in separate racks, a case of pistols older than the ones Eren carried. Armor on stands along the far wall — estate guard armor, well-maintained, the kind that had been used and cleaned and stored and used again over generations. At the back, a locked iron cabinet that Bren did not open.
Eren looked at the armor. At the visored helms above the breastplates. At the way the lantern light caught the metal.
He looked at it for a moment longer than he needed to.
"Come," Bren said.

The ground floor was the floor of function.
Bren walked them through it with the pace of someone who had walked it ten thousand times and had not stopped seeing it — the specific attention of a person whose job was to know the place they worked in down to its smallest detail. The kitchen ran the width of the north side: long preparation tables of scrubbed oak, the kind of oak that had taken on the pale grey of things that had been cleaned for a very long time. Copper pots hung from iron hooks above the central workstation, each one a slightly different size, each one in the precise position it was always in. The hearth was large enough to stand in, and a fire was already going in it — not a large fire, a working fire, the kind kept going all day because the house required it.
Gus appeared in the kitchen doorway.
He had found it on his own. Of course he had. He was standing just inside the entrance with his arms at his sides, looking at the copper pots with an expression that mixed professional respect with the specific sadness of someone who could see what a kitchen was capable of and was not currently in a position to demonstrate it. He looked at Bren.
"The sourdough starter," Gus said. "In the crock on the second shelf. How old is it?"
Bren looked at him. "Forty years."
Something moved in Gus's face. "I see," he said. He looked at the crock. He did not say anything else.
Adjacent to the kitchen, through a low door: the boiler room.
It was not a large room but it had a presence — the specific presence of a room that contained something working. The boiler itself was iron, old, riveted in the style of an earlier period, its surface warm to the hand when Eren touched it. Pipes ran from it through the walls in three directions — south, west, deeper into the east wing — carrying heat through the house's bones. A gauge on the boiler's face showed pressure, the needle sitting steady in the middle range.
"The boiler heats the ground floor and first floor," Bren said. "The upper floors have fireplaces. Wood is cut in the autumn and stored in the outbuilding to the west."
Eren looked at the pipes going into the east wing wall.
"Does it heat the basement?" he asked.
Bren looked at him. Brief, measuring. "No. The basement has no piping."
"But the basement has been getting warmer," Kayra said.
It was not a question. Bren looked at her the way he looked at people who said accurate things without being told them.
"Yes," he said. "For three months." He turned. "First floor."

The first floor was the floor of weight.
Not the weight of importance — the specific weight of accumulation, of a family that had been collecting and keeping for two centuries and had never developed the habit of letting things go. The library took up the east side entirely — they had already been in it, they passed its closed door. The west side was the first reception room.
It was large.
Not the largest room in the house — that was probably the library — but large in the way that rooms designed for gathering were large, with the particular proportions that came from having been designed to hold many people comfortably and having then held many people over a long time. The fireplace on the north wall was the room's center: wide, deep, the mantel carved from a single piece of the local stone, the carving on it the kind that had taken someone a long time and that no one had asked to have redone since. Portraits above the mantel, the same Moregrave faces in their different configurations. Furniture arranged in the geometries of conversation — chairs and settees in groupings, tables at the right heights, everything placed with the precision of a room that had been arranged and rearranged over generations until it had found the arrangement that worked and had stopped being touched.
Along the walls: suits of armor.
Six of them. Standing in alcoves that had been built for them, each one on a low stone plinth, each one complete — helm to sabatons, the full kit of a fighting man of an earlier century. The metal was dark, the kind of dark that came from age and oil rather than from disuse, the surfaces maintained. Visored helms. Gauntlets at the sides. The posture of each one subtly different — not identical, not mass-produced. Each one had been worn by someone.
Eren looked at them.
He looked at them the way he had looked at the armor in the basement. The same look — not long, not obvious. Just a half-second longer than he needed to.
Raphael was looking at them too. He was doing it more openly, the way Raphael did most things, turning slightly to take in each alcove as they walked past.
"Family armor?" he asked.
"Guard armor," Bren said. "From the estate's original garrison. When the garrison was reduced three generations ago, Lord Moregrave's grandfather had the sets preserved here." He walked past them without a second look. "The guest bedrooms are on this floor as well. You've been assigned rooms — Marta will have prepared them. The corridor to the left."
They did not go to the rooms. Not yet.

The second floor was quieter.
The museum room was on the east side — a room that had no other name, because the name it had been given at some point had been forgotten and what remained was simply what it was: a room full of things that the Moregrave family had accumulated over two centuries and had not known what else to do with. Display cases along the walls, glass-topped, the things inside them sorted by a logic that had been clear to whoever had sorted them and was less clear now. Medals. Small weapons. Papers in protective sleeves. Geological samples from the eastern hills. A collection of something that might have been fossils or might have been something else. Portraits of people who had not made it into the main gallery. A map of the continent that was two hundred years old and showed borders that did not exist anymore and did not show borders that did.
Raphael stopped at one of the cases.
He looked at what was inside: a sword, short, the kind carried as a secondary weapon, its blade engraved with something along the flat. He did not touch the case. He just looked.
"Move," Kayra said. Not unkind. Just factual.
Raphael moved.
The working rooms were across the hall — smaller, less accumulated, the rooms of people who had lived in them rather than the rooms of objects that had been stored in them. Staff quarters along the south side, each one neat, each one carrying the particular quality of a space that someone had made their own within the constraints of what it was. Bren did not take them through these. He walked past the corridor that led to them with the precision of a man who knew which parts of a house belonged to which kind of tour.

"Third floor," Bren said, and took them up.
The staircase to the third floor was narrower than the ones below — the house had not been built with three floors from the beginning, and the third had been added at a later point, the architecture of it slightly different in character, the ceilings lower. At the top: a short corridor, and at the end of it, a door that opened outward.
The terrace.
It was the full width of the central block — a stone platform, railed on three sides, the rail low enough that you could lean against it and see the grounds below in every direction. The south garden, the dry fountain, the road back to the crossroads visible between the trees. The orchard to the east, the kitchen garden to the north. The wall that surrounded the estate's grounds, following the perimeter in a rough rectangle, its stone the same dark stone as everything else.
At the terrace's center: the observatory.
Small — a single room, circular, the walls of it glass in iron frames, a rotating dome above that had been built to open and let instruments see the sky. Inside: a telescope on a mount that had been calibrated many times over many years, a desk with charts, a bookcase with a specific collection. The dome was closed now. The glass walls showed the afternoon in grey-amber, the light coming in from all sides at once.
Kayra stepped inside. She looked at the telescope. She looked at the charts on the desk — star maps, the positions of things in the sky marked and dated and remarked over many years. She picked up the topmost one. Set it down.
Eren was looking at the wall that surrounded the grounds.
From up here it was visible in its entirety — the full perimeter, the corner towers that had once had guards in them and now stood empty, the gate they had come through to the south. It was not a defensive wall in the current sense of the word. It was the wall of an earlier era, built when the estate had needed what a wall provided. It still stood. It was still maintained — the stones were fitted, the mortar was not crumbling. But it was old, and the towers were empty, and the gate had been standing open when they arrived.
"The guard post," he said. "In the front garden — who staffs it?"
"Two guards on rotation," Bren said. "Day and night. The estate employs six guards in total." He paused. "Reduced from twelve, three years ago. When Lord Moregrave's health declined."
"And the gardener's cottage?" Kayra asked. She was still looking at the charts. "Back garden."
"Helder and his wife. He has managed the grounds for twenty years." Bren looked at her. "They don't sleep in the main house."
A silence.
Raphael was leaning against the terrace rail, looking out at the grounds. The light was going. The amber had deepened, was turning toward the particular orange that came in the last twenty minutes before the sun went below the treeline. The orchard cast long shadows eastward. The dry fountain in the south garden was a dark shape in the last of the light.
"How long until dark?" Raphael asked.
Bren looked at the sky. "Twenty minutes. Perhaps less."
Raphael looked at Eren. Eren looked back.
"We should go in," Kayra said.
They went in.

They did not go in fast enough.
The library caught Eren's eye as they came down the first-floor corridor — not because he was looking for it, but because the library door was open and the light inside it was wrong. Not the afternoon light that had been coming through the tall south windows when they had sat before Lord Moregrave. Something else. Something that moved.
He stopped.
"Kayra."
She had already stopped. She was looking at the door. At the light beyond it — orange, shifting, the quality of something that breathed.
Raphael came up behind them. He looked at the door. He looked at the light.
"That's not a lamp," he said.
It was not a lamp.
Eren pushed the door open.

The library was on fire.
Not in the way of a building burning — not the fire of destruction, of something consuming what it touched. The fire was alive. It moved with purpose, with the specific directed motion of things that had intention, and it moved between the shelves and along the gallery railing and across the floor in shapes that were not the shapes fire made when it was simply burning.
Shapes that were not fire. That were made of fire.
They were small — the largest was perhaps knee height, roughly the form of something four-legged, though the form shifted as it moved, the fire that composed it rearranging itself without losing coherence. Their cores were white-orange, the hottest color, and at their edges they threw off sparks that extinguished before they reached anything flammable. They moved across the floor in patterns, between the shelves and the cases, leaving no char behind them, touching nothing that burned.
Six of them.
Seven.
They had not been here a moment ago.
The nearest one turned. Where its head would have been, if it had a head — the concentrated brightness of its core angled toward the three people in the doorway. A sound came from it: not a crackle, not the sound of burning. Something lower. Something that resonated.
Then they came.

The first one was fast.
It crossed the library floor in a motion that had no anticipatory signal — no coiling, no shift of weight — and the heat of it preceded it, a wave that arrived before the creature itself, the air it displaced hot enough to feel on the face from three meters. Eren stepped inside the doorframe, let it pass to his left, drew his sword and turned.
The blade went through it.
Not cleanly — not the clean resistance of something solid — but through it, the fire parting around the metal and reconstituting on the other side, the creature staggering, its core flickering. Not destroyed. Disrupted.
The second ritual had done something to the way he moved through a fight. He could feel it — not as a new thing, not as something grafted on, but as something that had always been there and had now been given room. The channels Mese had opened were settled now, the three frequencies no longer getting in each other's way. When he reached for Suru it was there immediately, no delay, no searching. The energy sat in his legs and his arms the way it lived there, the way it had learned to live there after two months of dough dolls and stone floors, and it was more than it had been. More stable. More present.
He hit the creature again.
The sword went through fire and came out the other side and this time he pushed electricity through the blade as it passed — small, the charge he had been building in the metal since he drew it, the battery-hum amplified and directed, lightning looking for the path through. The creature's core went white. Then dark. The fire scattered, individual sparks, and the sparks extinguished before they reached the shelves.
One.
Kayra had already taken two.
She moved through the library the way she moved through everything — reading it, the floor and the shelves and the positions of the creatures, two steps ahead of where she was going. The bonetite sword was out, and the pulse that ran along its surface when she drew it was running continuously now, the slow internal wave cycling faster than it had before the ritual, as if the sword had felt the change in her and had adjusted to it. She hit a creature with Kaba active — the earth-element coating on her fist — and the impact point of the strike went cold, the creature's fire extinguished at the contact, spreading outward from the point of impact like ice on water.
Two.
The third came at her from the left. She turned, the bonetite blade coming across in a tight arc, and the pulse discharged into the contact and the creature came apart.
Three.
Raphael was in the middle of the library with water moving around both his hands — not a strike, not yet, something he was building, the water pulling from the air and from the moisture in the old books and from himself. The element had settled in him differently than it had settled in Kayra, differently than it had settled in Eren. Raphael's water moved the way Raphael moved — not straight, not direct, but finding the path that was available and taking it, adapting, arriving at its target by routes that were not the routes you had prepared for.
He hit two creatures at once.
Not the full Cataracta — he had not built it to that, didn't need it for this. A controlled burst, directed, water against fire in the specific way that water met fire when the person directing it understood what they were doing. The two creatures' cores collapsed simultaneously, the fire going out the way fire went out when the thing sustaining it had been removed.
Five.
Raphael looked at his hands. Something moved across his face — not surprise, but the specific expression of someone who has done a thing and is noting that it went differently than it had gone before. More precise. Less cost.
He looked at Eren across the library.
The last two were moving — toward the back of the room, toward the locked case where Lord Moregrave's journals were kept. Eren crossed the floor, Suru full in both legs, the distance closing faster than it should have. One creature turned. He hit it before it had completed the turn, the electricity discharging through the blade at contact, and it went out.
Six.
Kayra took the last one from behind, the bonetite blade and the pulse together, and the library was quiet.
The air smelled of smoke that wasn't there — or was there, very faintly, the ghost of the heat they had been moving through. The books on the shelves were untouched. The floor was unmarked. The tall windows showed the last of the light — the sun had gone below the treeline while they were fighting, the sky above the orchard a deep orange thinning rapidly toward blue.
Raphael was looking at his hands again.
"The ritual," he said.
"Yes," Eren said.
"I could feel the difference." He closed his hands. "Could you?"
"Yes."
Kayra sheathed the bonetite sword. She looked at the case at the back of the room — locked, undamaged, the green binding on its edge visible in the fading light. She looked at the library door, still open behind them.
"We should tell Dusk," she said.
"Yes," Eren said.
He turned toward the door.
The door was not there.

Not gone — closed. The door had been open when they came through it and it was closed now, fitted into its frame with the particular solidity of a door that had no intention of being opened. Eren put his hand on the handle and turned it.
It did not move.
He tried again. The handle turned freely — nothing blocked it, nothing stuck — but the door did not open. As if the door had simply decided not to be a door anymore, had decided that what it was now was a wall, and was committed to that decision.
Raphael put his shoulder to it.
Nothing.
In the same moment — the same moment, as if whatever had closed the door had been waiting for the door to be tested — the light went out.
All of it.
Not the fading of the evening, not the slow dimming of sunset giving way to dusk. The library had three lamps that Bren had lit when they came through earlier, and all three went out simultaneously, the flames simply gone, nothing left, no ember, no dying glow. Through the tall windows the sky was still visible — that deep orange going blue — but the windows faced south and the last of the light was behind the treeline and what came through them was not enough to see by.
The library was dark.
Real dark. The dark of a room with no light source, the kind that takes ten seconds for the eyes to begin finding shapes in and never fully resolves into clarity.
Eren did not reach for a match. He reached for the electricity.
It came differently in the dark — more present, more immediate, as if darkness was a medium it preferred. He let a small charge run along the blade of his sword, not a strike, not a discharge — just current, just enough to give the metal a faint blue-white luminescence, the specific cold light of electricity given visible form. It was not bright. It was enough.
By that light: the library.
The books. The shelves. The gallery above. The locked case at the back. The closed door.
And the windows.
Through the glass, the south garden. The dry fountain. The darkening sky.
And moving across the garden in the last of the light — shapes. Not the fire creatures. Not the shapes of the Overlords, not the vast indistinct forms that covered the sky above Safe Haven. These shapes were low to the ground, moving fast, the specific movement of things that were not walking but flowing, the way smoke flowed or the way water moved when it moved with intention rather than gravity. Black — not the absence-of-light black, but a positive darkness, a black that was a quality rather than an absence.
They came from the wall. From the perimeter, from the east and from the south, moving toward the house.
More of them than he could count.

"Kayra," he said.
"I see them."
"Raphael."
"I see them." His voice was entirely even. "There are a lot of them."
There were a lot of them.
They hit the house — not the door, not the windows — the walls. All at once, from multiple directions, the sound of them moving through the stone like something passing through water, no resistance, no impact, simply arriving and then being inside. Through the library's walls, through the floor, through the ceiling. The darkness they brought with them was a different kind of dark than the dark of the extinguished lamps — it had a presence to it, a weight, the cold of something that consumed warmth rather than merely displacing it.
They filled the library.
Not fully — not the way the Overlords' shadows had filled the Celebration Hall — but enough. They moved between the shelves and along the gallery railing and across the floor, and where they moved the cold came with them, and the cold was a cold that got into the joints and the chest and the back of the throat, the cold that was not weather.
Eren kept the electricity running in the blade.
In that light: the shadows moving. Moving around the sword's light the way shadows moved around any light, defining themselves by it, taking their shapes from the edge where the light ended.
He swung at the nearest one.
The electricity discharged on contact and the shadow recoiled — not destroyed, but disrupted, its form losing coherence for a moment, the cold of it pulling back from the contact point. It reformed. It came back.
Slower.
"They don't like the electricity," he said.
"I don't have electricity," Raphael said.
"Water." Eren cut through another shadow, the discharge burning cold in the air. "Moving water. They're cold — generate heat."
A pause. Then the sound of Raphael doing what he did — the sound of the air changing slightly, the pressure that came before a water element worked at speed. "That's not how water works."
"Pressure then. Movement. Friction."
Another pause. Then a burst of water that hit the nearest shadow at full force — not hot, not particularly warm, but moving fast and hitting hard and the shadow it hit scattered before it reformed, taking longer than the others, the disruption lasting four seconds, five.
"That works," Raphael said.
Kayra had found her own answer.
The earth element and the shadows were not natural allies — earth was substance, solidity, mass — but what the Kaba coating did to the shadows when she hit them was what it did to everything: it compressed the contact point, applied the element's weight to the precise location of impact, and the shadows didn't like weight. They didn't like being pressed. She moved through the library with the bonetite blade in one hand and Kaba active on the other, striking alternately, the sword disrupting and the fist following up while the disruption held.
They were not dying.
None of them were dying. They were being disrupted, scattered, driven back — but the ones driven back were reforming, and new ones were still coming through the walls. The library was a closed space with limited options and an unlimited supply of the things filling it and the door was locked and was going to stay locked and this was a situation that was going to go one of two ways depending on how long it lasted.
Eren looked at the windows.
The garden outside was full of them.
He looked at the door.
He loaded Suru into both arms — everything he had in the channels — and hit the door.
The door held.
He hit it again. Same point, the electricity running through his fist at the moment of impact, the combined force of the two elements focused on the same contact.
The door held.
Third hit.
The lock shattered. Not the door — the lock, the mechanism inside it, the thing that had been making it a wall. The door swung open. The corridor beyond was dark.
Also full of shadows.
"Move," Kayra said.
They moved.

The night was long.
Not long in the way of nights that passed slowly — long in the way of nights that were full from end to end, that gave no interval between one thing and the next, that required everything you had and kept requiring it and did not stop requiring it until they were done with you rather than you being done with them.
The shadows were everywhere. Through the walls, through the floors, through the ceilings — the house's stone was no barrier to them, and the cold they carried dropped the temperature of every room they entered by degrees that accumulated as the night went on. The first floor corridor was the worst: the shadows had concentrated there, moving in the specific pattern of things that were not trying to destroy but to contain, to hold, to make the space uninhabitable through sheer presence and cold.
Then the armored suits came to life.
The six suits in the first reception room — the Moregrave guard armor on its plinths, the visored helms and the gauntlets and the centuries of careful maintenance — rose. Not suddenly, not violently. Slowly, the way things woke up that had been asleep for a very long time, the articulation of plate moving against plate in the specific sequence of joints finding their range of motion, the gauntleted hands lifting from the sides. The visored helms turned. And where the visors were, behind the dark slits, something had come to occupy the space that had been empty.
Not orange-red, not green. Something older. Something that had no color — or had all colors in combination, which produced something that read as no color, the eye refusing to assign it to any category it knew.
Eren looked at them.
Six.
He looked at the three of them.
Three.
"Split them," Kayra said.
She was already moving — left, taking two with her, the bonetite sword swinging in the tight arcs of someone fighting in a confined space against opponents with a greater reach than she had. The Kaba coating was on both fists now, and when she hit the suits the earth element did what it did to solid things: it compressed at the contact point, found the joins in the plate, worked into the spaces between the metal. The suits were heavy. They were not fast. They hit hard enough that the first blow she took — deflected off her shoulder rather than landed clean — sent her sideways into the wall and left a mark in the plaster.
She came off the wall and hit back.
Raphael had two of the suits and was doing something Eren had not seen him do before — using the water not as a strike but as a medium, wrapping it around the suits' joints, forcing into the articulations, the water finding the millimeter gaps in the plate and filling them and then freezing, or coming close enough to freezing that the effect was the same: the joints seizing, the motion stopping, the suits' momentum arrested at the moment of maximum extension.
One of them crashed into the settee and went through it.
Raphael looked at the settee. "That's going to be difficult to explain."
The remaining two came for Eren.
He did not fall back.
The second ritual had done something to the way he occupied space in a fight — not just the channels, not just the elements. Something more fundamental, the way the elements had settled into him and had changed the way he read the situation he was in. He could feel the suits coming the way he had felt things coming on the island, that half-second awareness that came before the event itself, the Ei that Milo had explained as information coming back through the channels.
He hit the first suit in the visor.
Full Suru, electricity discharged on contact, the combined force of both focused through the fist at the point where whatever was behind the visor was closest to the surface. The visor cracked. The light behind it flickered. The suit staggered.
He hit it again.
The light went out.
The suit fell. The plate settled against the floor with the sound of a thing that had been full of something and was now empty, the specific sound of absence contained in metal.
The second suit hit him.
He had known it was coming — had felt it in that half-second — and had been moving when it landed, the blow catching him across the back rather than full-center, the force of it enough to put him down on one knee but not enough to do what it had been intended to do. He came back up. The suit was already raising its arm for the follow-through.
He got inside the reach.
The electricity was already built — he had not discharged it on the fall, had held it, and now he put both hands on the suit's breastplate and released everything he had in the channel at once.
The light behind the visor went white. Then out.
The suit fell.
He stood over it breathing. His back hurt. His knees hurt. He looked at the room — the two suits Kayra had put down, the two Raphael had seized and dropped. The shadows still moving through the walls, still pouring in, the cold still present and deepening.
He looked at the windows.
Outside, the garden was still full. The shadows were still coming. The wall at the perimeter was still standing but it did not matter that the wall was standing because the shadows went through walls.
The night was not over.

The plants came at midnight.
The kitchen garden first — the late-season greens, the remaining root vegetables, the carefully maintained beds that Helder had tended for twenty years. They did not move the way plants moved in wind. They moved the way things moved when something had gotten inside them and was using the form without understanding what the form had been for — the roots pulling free of the soil, the stalks bending at angles that stalks did not bend at, the dried husks of harvested plants rising from the compost at the garden's end with the specific wrongness of something reanimated.
They came through the kitchen.
Through the window first — the kitchen's north window, which looked out onto the kitchen garden, which shattered inward under the pressure of stems and roots that had been given something that made them harder than they should have been, denser than they should have been. Then through the door. The boiler room first, the pipes rattling as roots worked through the gaps in the masonry around them. Then the kitchen itself.
Gus met them at the kitchen door.
What he did there was not visible to the three of them on the other side of the building, and they would not fully understand it until morning. What they heard: sounds that had the rhythm of a fight but not the sounds of one, the kitchen's particular acoustics carrying something that was almost music, almost mechanical, the sound of a process running at full capacity rather than the sound of a confrontation. Then silence from that direction. Then, much later, the smell of something baking.
The orchard came at two in the morning.
The old unpruned trees — the ones with decades of opinion about where their branches went — were moving before they were fully visible through the east windows. Not the movement of the garden plants, not the writhing of things reanimated. Something more deliberate. The trees were old enough and large enough that when they moved it was a different category of event, the sound of root systems pulling and wood under stress and the slow violence of something that had mass and was using it.
They did not come inside.
They came to the wall of the east wing and they pressed against it — not striking, not destroying, just pressing, the weight of old trees against old stone, and the stone held but the pressure was felt through the floor and the walls and the furniture and the people standing against walls in the dark trying to hold their positions against shadows that kept coming and cold that kept deepening.
Eren lost track of time.
He knew what hour it was when the armored suits rose because he had looked at the clock in the reception room before they did. After that he stopped looking at clocks. There was no value in knowing how much night remained when the night was the kind that had to be gotten through rather than managed.
He fought.
He fought the way he had learned to fight — not against the shadows, which could not be fought in the traditional sense, but alongside Kayra and Raphael, moving through the house, keeping the shadows from concentrating in any single space long enough to make that space untenable. Driving them from room to room, clearing corridors, opening and closing doors, keeping movement as their primary defense because the shadows were not trying to kill them, he had come to understand. They were trying to hold them in place. They wanted them still.
He did not let them be still.
At some point deep in the night Kayra said nothing but handed him something — pressed it into his hand, warm, the smell of it cutting through the cold. He looked down. A piece of bread, still slightly warm from the kitchen.
He ate it while walking.
He did not ask where she had gotten it.

The sun came up at six forty-three.
He knew because he was at the observatory window when it happened — not by intention, he had ended up there, the third floor being the floor with the most windows and therefore the most light available for the electricity to work with — and he saw the sky go from the particular black of deep night to the particular blue of pre-dawn to the first pale gold of actual morning.
The shadows went with the darkness.
Not slowly — immediately, the way they had arrived, the cold departing the walls and floors and ceilings in a single moment rather than gradually, the temperature of the house rising several degrees in the space of a minute. The closed doors that had been closed opened. All of them, simultaneously, their handles turning with no one touching them, the wood swinging back into rooms that were now just rooms, the stone corridors that had been cold channels of shadow now simply corridors in the morning light.
The orchard trees had stopped pressing against the east wall.
Eren stood in the observatory and looked out the glass walls at the grounds. The garden, the orchard, the perimeter wall. The guard post visible at the front gate. The gardener's cottage in the back, a thin line of smoke from its chimney — Helder and his wife, who had been in there all night, who presumably had their own account of what the night had been.
Everything looked like what it was. Old stone, old trees, a dry fountain in the south garden, the road back to the crossroads visible between the trees. Ordinary. Entirely ordinary in the morning light.
He went downstairs.

The first reception room.
They were all there.
Dusk was on the settee — or what remained of the settee, which had lost one arm to the suit that Raphael had put through it and was now a settee with a specific history. He was not sitting upright. He was lying on his back, one arm across his chest, his shadow on the floor its usual wrong angle. His coat was torn at the left side. The tear was dark.
His eyes were open.
Cain was in the corner — standing, which meant something, because standing after a night like this was a choice rather than a condition. The restriction sat in him at its baseline, the settled quiet of something that had been opened and had closed again and was simply waiting. His hands were at his sides. He looked at Eren when Eren came in and nodded once.
Gus was at the table. He had produced food from somewhere — the kitchen, presumably, working in the specific conditions of the last several hours, which Eren had thought about briefly during the night and then stopped thinking about because thinking about it took attention he did not have available. What was on the table was what it always was when Gus had had time and a fire: something warm, something that smelled like the kitchen of the Academy tower rather than like an estate house in the middle of a long night.
He was eating one of his own cinnamon rolls. He was doing it with the specific deliberateness of someone who had decided that the act of eating something they had made themselves was the correct response to the current moment.
Arlo was in the armchair. The armchair had survived the night intact and Arlo was in it with the ease of someone who had never been in any other chair, his white hair slightly less arranged than usual, his eyes open. He looked at Eren. He looked at Kayra. He looked at Raphael.
"You look functional," he said. His voice was its usual voice — the voice of a man who had decided that urgency was optional and had not revised that decision despite the preceding eight hours.
"Functional enough," Raphael said.
Milo was standing beside the window. He had his notebook out. He looked up when they came in, and what was in his face was the particular expression that came after a night of having his Ei running at full extension — reading the house, reading what moved through it, cataloguing — which cost nothing in the obvious way and cost a great deal in the way that sustained perception cost: the specific fatigue of having paid attention to everything for eight hours without interval.
He did not look at the notebook. He looked at the three of them.
"Both guards," he said. Quietly. "East side. They were on patrol."
Nobody said anything.
Eren looked at Dusk on the settee. At the torn coat. At the eyes that were open and tracking.
"Dusk," he said.
"Here." His voice was what it always was. Flat. Sufficient. Nothing in it that it had not been asked to carry. "Sit down."
They sat.
Dusk was quiet for a moment. He looked at the ceiling — the same ceiling, the same plaster, the same morning light coming through the reception room's tall windows that had been showing garden and orchard all night.
Then he looked at them. All of them. Milo and Cain and Gus and Arlo and the four first-years, his shadow two seconds ahead on the floor, already reading the next thing while the rest of him was still in this one.
"The threat is larger than I assessed," he said.
He said it the way he said things that were true and needed to be said — flatly, without the architecture of apology or qualification around it. Just the fact.
"What came through this house last night was not what a weakening seal does to a contained elemental. A weakening seal lets heat through. It lets light through. It does not — " he paused " — animate the dead and the still and the growing things." He looked at the torn coat without looking at it. "Fenrir is not what is moving through the seal. Something is using the seal's weakening as a conduit. Something with reach."
"The Overlords," Kayra said.
"Their influence. Yes." He looked at the window. "I am confident we can handle what is in that chamber. I am confident in this team." He stopped. Something moved in his face — controlled, brief, the quality of a person who had made an assessment they did not enjoy making. "But the four of you are going to need more than what you came here with. What we faced tonight was not a serious test of your current level. What is in that basement will be."
Raphael opened his mouth.
"I'm not questioning your capability," Dusk said, before he said it. "I'm telling you what I saw last night. The gap between adequate and sufficient, in what that chamber contains, is larger than I want to send you into without addressing it."
He sat up.
It cost him something to do it. He did it anyway.
"Each of you is going to learn one technique. Your element, specific to your element, the technique that closes the gap the most directly." He looked at Eren. At Kayra. At Raphael. At Orin, who had been in the corner through this entire exchange in the specific way Orin was always in corners, present and quiet and carrying whatever the night had given him without displaying it. "We have time. A few days. The seal is weakening but it is not gone." He paused. "Use the days."
The morning light was fully in the room now.
Gus pushed the tray toward the center of the table.
"Eat," he said. "We can start after."
Nobody argued with Gus about food.
They ate.
