At the dinner table, Newt and his wife exchanged a glance before simultaneously turning their gaze to a certain silver-haired little dumpling who was still burying her head in her food.
They wanted to speak but stopped, yet felt they had to speak.
Newt coughed lightly, just about to open his mouth to ask, when the little one, still earnestly eating, took the initiative to hand over a glass of water.
"Teacher, have some water."
Newt choked on his words. He could only cup the glass and take a few sips, looking at his wife with eager, pleading eyes.
Tina sighed silently and asked crisply, "Kate, have you learned Split-Focus Casting before?"
"Hmm?" Kate raised her head with a bewildered expression, her mouth still chewing food.
If one didn't know the peculiarities about her, they would certainly view her as nothing more than a naive child who knew nothing of the world.
With some difficulty, Kate swallowed the food before blinking in confusion. "What is Split-Focus Casting?"
The things Grandpa Rand had made her memorize in the past certainly hadn't mentioned this.
As expected.
The old couple exchanged a knowing look.
Newt then spoke up again. "Tina went upstairs today and saw that you seem to have already mastered the Levitation Charm. Is that true?"
"I don't know if it counts as completely mastering it. I actually wanted to ask Teacher to take another look for me after dinner."
Kate smiled shyly. She casually picked up a napkin to wipe her mouth, then took out her wand and gave a light wave at the array of dishes before her.
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
Under precise magical control, several plates on the table floated up silently, without the slightest wobble.
There was no sign of magical leakage, and the control was extremely precise.
Newt looked at her in astonishment, then probed further, "Then, can you control them to perform different movements simultaneously right now?"
As soon as his voice fell, the two empty plates in front of him began to dance alternately—one rising, one falling.
Meanwhile, the other plates on the table remained floating in their original spots, not affected in the slightest.
"Mmm..." Kate's small face flushed red. "This is the limit for now. I can't do even one more!"
As she finished speaking, the plates that had been flipping up and down slowly descended along with the other tableware, returning impartially to their original positions.
Despite possessing massive magic power, she was forced to use the minimum amount of strength, combined with headache-inducing concentration, to cast the spell.
Such a burden was indeed a bit too much for her, given that her body hadn't even begun to develop yet.
"You've worked hard, child."
Tina immediately went over and hugged her tight. She pointed her wand at the empty cup in front of her. "Aguamenti!"
The cup was instantly filled with clear water. Tina picked it up and handed it to her. "Here, child, drink some water first."
"Thank you, Ma'am."
While Kate tilted her head back to gulp down the water, Tina stroked her smooth silver hair with gratification, turning her head to look at her husband.
After decades of marriage, Newt had long since learned to understand the meaning behind his wife's every look.
Newt used a Scouring Charm to clean everything on the table, then stood up and smiled at his disciple.
"Good child, you have already mastered this Levitation Charm quite well. However, this method of Split-Focus Casting... how did you figure it out?"
Kate, who had just finished her water and hadn't quite caught her breath, paused in a daze. "Isn't this something you can do just by thinking about it in your heart?"
She had never even heard of techniques like 'Split-Focus Casting.' She had assumed it was something everyone in the magical world could do.
Newt was rendered speechless for a moment.
Back in the day, he had practiced for a long time before learning it. How come it was so easy when it came to his own disciple?
It was only because he was good-natured by nature, and at his age, aside from a slight sigh of emotion, he didn't feel much else.
"That's fine too. Learning this isn't a bad thing." He quickly adjusted his mindset and looked at his genius apprentice.
"Split-Focus Casting consumes a lot of mental energy. If you want to practice it in the future, you must remember to leave intervals for rest."
Kate nodded, half-understanding. "Then, Teacher, the lesson I need to learn tomorrow is..."
"You've worked hard these past two days. Tomorrow, just read some theoretical courses in the study, or go to the greenhouse next to the garden to learn some knowledge about Herbology."
Newt's thinking was still stuck in the relaxed teaching atmosphere of Hogwarts.
Seeing that Kate had mastered the Levitation Charm with godlike speed today, he thought to let her rest tomorrow.
When his grandson was this age, he thought about playing every day. He figured that although Kate was introverted, a child's nature should be roughly the same.
"Okay, I understand. You two rest early. I'm a bit tired, so I'll go to sleep first."
Kate showed no dissatisfaction with his teaching arrangement. She nodded and went straight upstairs.
Closing the door, she opened the System and added the two Attribute Points awarded for completing the quest to Vitality.
Although there was no obvious difference in her senses compared to before, according to the System's description, higher Vitality meant a thicker health bar, and the body's various resistances would also improve.
In other words, if she practiced spells for a whole day again tomorrow, she definitely wouldn't be as exhausted as she was today.
At the same time, the new Daily Quest had refreshed.
[Daily Quest 3: Please understand and preliminarily master one spell before the end of tomorrow.]
It was the same as today...
Kate stared at the screen thoughtfully. If nothing unexpected happened, the Daily Quests issued by the System in the coming period would be roughly the same.
She needed to understand and preliminarily master one spell every day. In the early stages, she could pick simple spells to practice slowly.
But in the later stages, once the daily basic spells were finished, the more profound ones—like the Patronus Charm—could not be learned in a single day.
The System should know this too.
After the daily spells were learned, it would either have her switch to learning other things, like Herbology or Potions, or it would have her continue to pursue advanced studies in Charms.
However, in that case, whether it was gaining a deeper understanding of previously mastered spells or learning more profound magic, neither could be completed in a day or two.
Kate looked at the Spell Interface, where only one spell was lit up, and recalled the progress bar for the Levitation Charm earlier.
This afternoon, in order to master the Levitation Charm faster, she had chosen the method of casting spells on different objects simultaneously to shorten the progress time.
The result was exactly as she expected. On the basis of understanding the Levitation Charm, using Split-Focus Casting on multiple objects allowed the Levitation Charm to rise to Level 5 in just one afternoon.
Planning for the future, she had to use the same method to practice the one spell she was required to learn each day.
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
The items in the room floated up independently once again. Kate stood in the center of the room, her small face flushing red once more.
