Chapter 35 - The Clip

The whistle ended it.

Not gradually.

Not softly.

Just—done.

For half a second, the field went quiet.

Then the noise came back all at once.

Ridgeview's side broke first.

Diego didn't run—he exploded.

"Did you see that?!"

He slammed into Li Shen from the side, nearly knocking him off balance, laughing like he couldn't contain it.

"That wasn't normal—there's no way that was normal!"

Marcus walked up slower.

Breathing heavier than before, hands on his hips.

He looked at Li Shen for a moment.

Then nodded once.

"That angle… shouldn't exist."

Ethan didn't say anything immediately.

He was still looking at the goal.

Then at Li Shen.

Then back at the goal.

"You weren't playing like that before."

Not accusing.

Not impressed either.

Just… trying to understand.

Li Shen didn't answer.

He was still on the ground.

Grass against his back.

Sky above him.

Noise fading in and out.

His breathing was steady.

Too steady.

…so this is it.

He didn't move for a second longer than necessary.

Then sat up.

On the sideline—

Coach Ramirez watched.

Arms crossed.

Expression unchanged.

But when Li Shen stood—

there was a small shift.

"…you stopped hesitating," he said.

Nothing else.

No praise.

No breakdown.

Just that.

Claire was already on her feet.

She didn't shout.

Didn't wave.

But she was smiling.

Slightly.

Like she'd seen something she had been waiting for.

The field emptied slowly.

Teams separating.

Voices blending into noise again.

Someone nearby replayed something on their phone.

"Yo—look at this."

Another voice:

"No way he got that high."

Li Shen passed them without stopping.

But the sound followed him anyway.

"…slow it down."

"…pause—right there."

"…what the—"

He didn't turn.

By the time they reached the exit—

Diego was still talking.

"I'm telling you, that last part—when you just dropped like that—"

He demonstrated badly, throwing himself backward mid-step.

"—that was cold. That was actually cold."

Marcus shook his head.

"You're going to break your spine doing that."

"I'm trying to understand the movement!"

"You're not understanding anything."

Ethan stayed quieter this time.

Walking just ahead.

Hands in pockets.

Thinking.

Li Shen walked with them.

Listening.

Not responding.

…dropped like that?

He replayed it once.

Jump.

Contact.

Landing.

Then—

nothing.

I didn't decide that.

The thought wasn't uncomfortable.

Just… noted.

At home, the air felt the same.

Warm.

Still.

"Back," Li Shen said, stepping in.

Claire was already there.

On the couch.

Phone in hand.

She didn't look up immediately.

Just—

"Yeah. I know."

A pause.

Then she turned the screen toward him.

"You're trending."

He stopped.

"…trending?"

"Not like—global or anything," she said quickly. "Relax. But—here."

She tapped the screen.

Played the video.

The field.

The noise.

The moment.

Him.

The jump looked different from the outside.

Higher.

Cleaner.

Almost… disconnected from the rest of the movement.

The strike—

sharp.

Contained.

Then—

the landing.

Feet touched the ground.

Balance held.

And then—

he just let go.

Fell backward.

Flat.

The clip looped.

Again.

Again.

He watched it twice.

Didn't react.

"…that's me?"

Claire blinked.

"Yeah?"

He looked at the screen again.

They're watching that.

The thought settled quietly.

He didn't feel surprised.

Didn't feel proud.

Just—

aware.

Claire leaned back.

"You don't have an account, right?"

"…no."

She stared at him.

"You're serious?"

"Yes."

"That's insane."

She sat up immediately.

"Come here."

He didn't argue.

Sat beside her.

"Okay," she said, already moving through the app. "We'll make one."

"What for?"

She glanced at him.

"…so people can find you?"

A pause.

Find me.

He didn't comment.

Username field appeared.

"What do you want it to be?"

He looked at it.

Didn't think long.

"li.shen."

"Taken."

"Then something close."

She typed.

Adjusted.

"lshen_ works."

"…okay."

Account created.

No posts.

No bio.

Nothing added.

Just an empty profile.

Claire followed him first.

Then showed him the comments under the clip.

"They're calling you things already," she said.

He looked.

"that timing is weird"

"he's like half a second off everything"

"nah that's clean af"

"who is this guy"

"OFFBEAT FR"

"offbeat?? yeah that fits"

He paused there.

Offbeat.

Not wrong.

He scrolled once more.

Stopped.

Closed the app.

Claire raised an eyebrow.

"That's it?"

"For now."

He leaned back slightly.

Silence settled.

From the other room, voices carried faintly.

Normal.

Unchanged.

But something wasn't the same.

He looked at his hands.

Then at the ceiling.

They're watching.

A small shift in his breathing.

Not tension.

Not excitement.

Something in between.

…again.

But this time—

he didn't feel like it was happening to him.

I can choose this.

The thought stayed.

Claire nudged him lightly.

"You're going to post anything?"

"..try it later."

"About what?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"...I don't know yet."

But he did.

Not fully.

Not clearly.

Just enough.

Outside—

somewhere—

someone replayed the clip again.

And this time—

Li Shen didn't feel distant from it.

He felt connected.

Not to the move.

To the moment.
