Chapter 41 - Celebration

The music was the first thing that hit him.

Not loud enough to be overwhelming.

Just present.

A steady rhythm flowing through the house like a second heartbeat.

Li Shen stood at the entrance for a moment.

The door was already open.

Warm light spilled out onto the porch, mixing with the night air behind him.

Claire stepped in first.

"Okay," she said casually, "we're here."

Li Shen followed.

The moment he crossed the threshold, the atmosphere changed.

Not danger.

Not pressure.

Just… density.

Sound layered itself across the space.

Laughter.

Game audio.

Footsteps on wooden floor.

Someone shouting something about losing unfairly.

The house was bigger than expected.

Not extravagant.

Comfortable.

Lived-in in a way that made everything feel slightly softer than reality.

A couch sat in the center of the living room.

And on it—

a battlefield of controllers, snacks, and focus.

Daniel leaned forward slightly, eyes locked on the screen.

Ethan sat straighter than everyone else, precise even while playing.

Marcus was calm, controlled, barely reacting even when something went wrong.

And Diego—

Diego was fully animated.

"NO—THAT WAS A READ, I SWEAR—"

A second later:

"Okay that was actually insane."

He noticed Li Shen and immediately pointed.

"Bro finally arrived!"

Without looking away from the game.

Claire sighed. "That's his greeting."

Li Shen stepped further inside.

The floor was warm underfoot.

The air smelled faintly of food, sugar, and something baked recently.

Then he noticed it.

A cake on the kitchen counter.

Simple design.

Not overly decorated.

A small "Victory" written on it in slightly uneven icing.

Beside it stood Diego's parents.

His father was easy to recognize even without introduction.

He had the posture of someone who had once moved fast for a living and still carried that memory in his body.

Relaxed shoulders.

Sharp eyes.

A faint energy that felt expressive rather than strict.

He looked like someone who could turn even standing still into something deliberate.

When he saw Li Shen, he smiled first.

Not polite.

Genuine.

"Ah," he said, like he was greeting a guest he had already decided he liked. "You're the famous offbeat kid."

Diego groaned loudly from the couch. "Dad, don't call him that."

The father ignored him completely.

"I used to play professionally," he added, gesturing vaguely toward the couch. "And I've seen a lot of players. You're interesting."

Li Shen looked at him.

"…Professional?"

"E-sports," he said. Then added, "and soccer, before that. Long story."

Claire leaned slightly toward Li Shen. "His dad is weirdly good at everything that involves timing."

"That is not weird," Diego muttered. "That is genetics."

His father laughed lightly.

Then turned slightly toward the kitchen.

"Come in, come in. Don't stand there like you're entering a cultivation trial."

...

Li Shen paused.

Then stepped fully inside.

That sentence made more sense than it should have.

Claire immediately followed him in.

"Where's your mom?" she asked casually.

"Upstairs," Diego's father replied. "She's setting up food."

At the mention, Diego shouted without looking away from the screen:

"Mom is the real MVP!"

A voice came from upstairs immediately.

"Diego, if you break my furniture again I am deleting your internet."

Diego froze.

Then whispered:

"…I didn't even do anything this time."

His father smirked.

Claire leaned slightly toward Li Shen again.

"That's his mom."

Li Shen nodded once.

Footsteps came down the stairs.

Diego's mother appeared next.

And the room shifted slightly—not in intensity, but in structure.

She didn't feel loud.

She didn't feel soft either.

She felt… organized.

The kind of presence that immediately made chaos look like it had boundaries.

Her eyes scanned the room once.

Paused on Diego.

Then the cake.

Then the couch.

Then finally Li Shen.

"You must be Li Shen," she said simply.

"Yes."

She nodded once, like that answer was acceptable.

"I heard a lot about you today."

Diego groaned again. "I didn't even say that much."

She ignored him.

Her expression softened slightly, just enough to be noticeable.

"Good job today," she said.

Not exaggerated.

Not emotional.

Just honest.

Then she turned slightly toward the kitchen.

"Food is ready in ten minutes. No one destroys anything before that."

Diego raised a hand. "Define 'destroys'—"

"Diego."

"Okay, okay."

Claire leaned toward Li Shen again.

"Mom runs the house," she whispered. "Dad runs the chaos."

Li Shen observed both.

"…Balanced."

Claire smiled. "Exactly."

He looked back toward the couch.

The game was still going.

Ethan scored something clean.

Marcus reacted minimally but clearly adjusted his posture in satisfaction.

Daniel gave a quiet nod like he had expected it.

Diego immediately argued that it didn't count.

The energy was constant.

Not dangerous.

Just alive.

Li Shen stepped further into the room.

The floor creaked slightly under him.

No one reacted.

No one stared for long.

He was not being evaluated.

Not being judged.

Just included.

That was… different.

Claire moved beside him.

"You good?" she asked again.

He paused.

Then answered honestly.

"…Yes."

A beat.

Then added:

"This place is… warm."

Claire blinked, then smiled softly.

"That's the word you chose?"

"Yes."

"Yeah," she said, looking around. "It is."

From the kitchen, Diego's father called out:

"Alright! Game pause in five minutes. Cake time!"

Diego immediately protested.

"Dad, that's not how timing works!"

"It is now."

The room filled with laughter.

Not loud enough to overwhelm.

Just enough to exist.

Li Shen stood there for a moment longer.

Then slowly moved toward the couch.

Not because he had to.

Because there was space.

And for now—

that was enough.
