Chapter 42 - Tasty

The game ended when Diego's dad decided it ended.

Not because of score.

Not because of fairness.

Just—

"Pause it."

Diego immediately protested. "That was mid-round!"

"Cake is higher priority."

"That is not how competition works!"

"That is exactly how life works."

Marcus stood up first.

Daniel followed.

Ethan placed the controller down neatly, like he had already accepted the outcome before it was announced.

Diego dropped back into the couch dramatically.

"This is sabotage."

Claire walked past him. "You'll survive."

"I might not."

"You will."

Li Shen watched them all move.

No resistance.

No real argument.

Just… shifting.

The center of attention moved from the screen—

to the table.

The cake sat there.

Simple.

White frosting. Slightly uneven edges.

"Victory" written across the top like someone had tried to make it straight and failed halfway through.

A knife rested beside it.

Diego's mom picked it up.

Clean motion.

No hesitation.

"Everyone gets a slice," she said.

Diego leaned forward. "Define slice."

She didn't look at him.

"Normal slice."

"That sounds suspiciously small."

"It is normal."

"That's not reassuring."

Claire took a plate and handed one to Li Shen without looking at him.

"Take it," she said. "You'll need it."

"For what?"

"Existing here."

That answer did not clarify anything.

But he took it anyway.

The cake was cut.

Clean lines.

Even spacing.

Efficient.

Slices moved from knife to plate in a steady rhythm.

One for Marcus.

One for Daniel.

One for Ethan.

Diego leaned forward further each time.

"That one's bigger."

"It is not."

"That one is absolutely bigger."

"Sit down."

"I am sitting."

"You are leaning aggressively."

"That is because justice is not being served."

His father took a slice and handed it to him.

"This is yours."

Diego looked at it.

Then at the cake.

Then back at the slice.

"…This is smaller."

"It is not."

"It is."

"It builds character."

"I don't want character, I want cake."

Claire snorted.

Marcus shook his head.

Daniel looked like he had already accepted Diego's suffering as a natural part of the environment.

Ethan didn't react at all.

Li Shen watched.

Not the complaint.

The distribution.

Order.

Pattern.

Everyone receiving something.

No hierarchy.

No test.

No qualification.

Just—

given.

Then a plate appeared in front of him.

He looked down.

The slice was… larger.

Not dramatically.

But noticeably.

Enough that the difference was clear.

He paused.

Claire noticed first.

"Take it."

He didn't move immediately.

"This is… larger."

Diego's head snapped toward him instantly.

"WHAT."

He leaned forward like he had just discovered betrayal.

"Why is his bigger?"

Diego's mom didn't look up.

"He's a guest."

"That is discrimination."

"That is hospitality."

"That is injustice."

"That is life."

Diego leaned back again, defeated but still offended.

"I don't like this system."

His father patted his shoulder. "You'll live."

"I might not."

"You will."

Li Shen picked up the plate.

The cake was soft.

Slightly warm.

The smell reached him first—sweet, unfamiliar in a way that didn't feel artificial.

He stared at it for a moment.

Not confused.

Just… assessing.

Then he asked, quietly:

"What is this?"

The room stopped.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just—

paused.

Marcus looked over.

Daniel blinked.

Ethan turned his head slightly.

Claire froze mid-motion.

Diego stared at him like something had just broken.

"…What?"

Li Shen looked at the slice again.

Then back at them.

"This."

He lifted the plate slightly.

"What is it?"

Silence.

Then—

Diego leaned forward slowly.

"You've never had cake?"

Li Shen thought about it.

Then answered:

"…No."

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Claire looked at him carefully.

Not mocking.

Not laughing.

Just… realizing.

Ethan's gaze sharpened slightly.

Marcus crossed his arms.

Daniel didn't say anything.

Diego blinked once.

Then twice.

Then leaned back.

"…No way."

Li Shen looked at the slice again.

Soft texture.

Sweet scent.

Structured form.

It did not resemble anything from his previous world.

No spiritual energy.

No medicinal function.

No cultivation purpose.

Just—

food.

Given freely.

He took the fork.

Pressed it lightly into the surface.

It sank without resistance.

That alone was unusual.

He lifted a small piece.

Paused for half a second.

Then ate it.

The reaction wasn't immediate.

He didn't move.

Didn't speak.

He just… processed.

Sweet.

Soft.

Light.

No strain.

No density.

No purpose beyond taste.

His eyes shifted slightly.

That was all.

But everyone noticed.

Diego leaned forward again.

"Well?"

Claire watched him closely.

Ethan didn't move.

Marcus waited.

Daniel tilted his head slightly.

Li Shen swallowed.

Then said:

"…It is unnecessary."

Silence.

Then Diego exploded.

"UNNECESSARY?!"

Claire burst out laughing.

Marcus exhaled sharply.

Daniel turned away, shoulders shaking slightly.

Ethan actually smiled.

Li Shen looked at them.

Confused.

"It provides no functional benefit," he continued calmly. "It is not efficient."

Diego pointed at him like he had been personally attacked.

"It's not supposed to be efficient!"

"Then why eat it?"

"Because it tastes good!"

Li Shen paused.

Considered that.

Then looked at the cake again.

Then said:

"…I see."

And took another bite.

This time—

no one stopped him.

But the room had changed.

Not louder.

Not heavier.

Just… aware.

Because for a brief moment—

something very simple had become something very real.

And Li Shen, holding a plate of cake he did not need—

did not put it down.
